Strong when

  • Strong priority damage and multi-target pressure
  • Clear Voidform burst windows
  • Off-healing and utility

Plan around

  • Requires target-count and talent-aware DoT decisions
  • Insanity and Tentacle Slam charge management
  • Movement can disrupt Voidweaver windows

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Item Level / Intellect
  2. 2.Haste
  3. 3.Mastery
  4. 4.Critical Strike
  5. 5.Versatility

Voidweaver generally prefers Haste around 25-33% in single target and 25-35% in AoE, followed by Mastery. Archon single target can prefer Mastery before Haste, while its AoE profile returns to Haste first. These are targets, not hard caps: validate close items against your current talent build, target count, and trinkets.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Maximize Shadow Word: Madness uptime: Insanity is Shadow's only resource and Shadow Word: Madness its spender. Never cap at 100 Insanity, and keep Madness running as long as possible for Mastery: Shadow Weaving damage.
  • Keep cooldowns on cooldown: prioritize shorter-cooldown spells over longer ones so you never lose a use of an ability across the encounter.
  • React to procs: Shadowy Insight and Mind Devourer need to be spent as they occur to avoid wasting casts.
  • AoE plays almost identically to single target - you cleave off one priority target through Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link.
VoidweaverPlays around Void Torrent's Entropic Rift and Void Blast. The AoE list is the same as single target - cleave comes from Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Shadow Word: Pain - cast to maintain it
  2. 2.Vampiric Touch - maintain, either with Tentacle Slam or a hard cast
  3. 3.Voidform
  4. 4.Power Infusion
  5. 5.Shadow Word: Death - if the target has an absorb shield
  6. 6.Void Blast - if Shadow Word: Madness is active or Entropic Rift is about to expire
  7. 7.Shadow Word: Madness - spend Insanity if Madness is not active, about to fall off, you are about to cap, or Entropic Rift is active
  8. 8.Void Volley
  9. 9.Void Torrent - to activate Entropic Rift
  10. 10.Mind Blast
  11. 11.Shadow Word: Madness
  12. 12.Tentacle Slam - if there will be no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
  13. 13.Shadow Word: Death - if the target is below 20% health
  14. 14.Mind Flay - interrupt it as soon as anything higher priority becomes available

AoE priority

  1. 1.Same list as single target - AoE cleaves off one priority target via Tentacle Slam and Psychic Link
  2. 2.Shadow Word: Pain - cast to maintain it
  3. 3.Vampiric Touch - maintain via Tentacle Slam or hard cast
  4. 4.Voidform
  5. 5.Power Infusion
  6. 6.Shadow Word: Death - if the target has an absorb shield
  7. 7.Void Blast - if Shadow Word: Madness is active or Entropic Rift is about to expire
  8. 8.Shadow Word: Madness - if not active, about to fall off, near Insanity cap, or Entropic Rift is active
  9. 9.Void Volley
  10. 10.Void Torrent - to activate Entropic Rift
  11. 11.Mind Blast
  12. 12.Shadow Word: Madness
  13. 13.Tentacle Slam - if no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
  14. 14.Shadow Word: Death - if any target is below 20% health
  15. 15.Mind Flay - interrupt for anything higher priority

Opener

  1. 1.Cast Tentacle Slam.
  2. 2.Cast Shadow Word: Pain.

  5. 5.Cast Void Volley.

  7. 7.Cast Void Torrent.
  8. 8.Cast Void Blast.
ArchonThe Halo-led alternative cadence. Halo slots in above Voidform, and Mind Flay: Insanity joins the priority while Madness is active.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Shadow Word: Pain - if it is not active
  2. 2.Vampiric Touch - maintain, either with Tentacle Slam or a hard cast
  3. 3.Halo
  4. 4.Voidform
  5. 5.Power Infusion
  6. 6.Void Volley
  7. 7.Shadow Word: Madness - spend Insanity if Madness is not active, about to fall off, or you are about to cap
  8. 8.Mind Blast
  9. 9.Mind Flay: Insanity - if Shadow Word: Madness is active
  10. 10.Shadow Word: Madness - if Voidform is active
  11. 11.Tentacle Slam - if there will be no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
  12. 12.Shadow Word: Death - if the target is below 20% health
  13. 13.Mind Flay - interrupt it as soon as anything higher priority becomes available

  3. 3.Vampiric Touch - maintain via Tentacle Slam or hard cast
  4. 4.Halo
  5. 5.Voidform
  6. 6.Power Infusion
  7. 7.Void Volley
  8. 8.Shadow Word: Madness - if not active, about to fall off, or near Insanity cap
  9. 9.Mind Blast
  10. 10.Mind Flay: Insanity - if Shadow Word: Madness is active
  11. 11.Shadow Word: Madness - if Voidform is active
  12. 12.Tentacle Slam - if no additional targets to DoT and no upcoming movement
  13. 13.Shadow Word: Death - if any target is below 20% health
  14. 14.Mind Flay - interrupt for anything higher priority

Opener

  1. 1.Cast Tentacle Slam.
  2. 2.Cast Shadow Word: Pain.
  3. 3.Cast Halo.
  4. 4.Cast Voidform.
  5. 5.Cast Power Infusion, use Light's Potential and any on-use trinkets.
  6. 6.Cast Void Volley.

Pre-combat checks

  • Apply Shadowform - it must be active to do full damage with your spells.
  • Cast Power Word: Fortitude to buff you and your party with Stamina.

Major cooldowns

Power Infusion

  • With Twins of the Sun Priestess, Power Infusion also buffs an ally - pick a target who consistently gets high value from the Haste every 2 minutes, and adjust targets through the encounter if needed.
  • Always prioritize your own value and damage over an ally's, get the maximum number of uses, and line it up with your other powerful cooldowns.

Opener and cooldown pacing

  • Every opener has three goals: put the most important spells on cooldown, generate Insanity to start maintaining Shadow Word: Madness, and react to important procs in the first 10-15 seconds.
  • When moving, cast Tentacle Slam, Shadow Word: Death, or Shadow Word: Pain to keep generating Insanity and dealing damage.

Talents and hero trees

Use Voidweaver for the single-target profile below and Archon when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.

Recommended starting profiles

Single-target: Voidweaver

Voidweaver is the default current raid choice: Entropic Rift, Void Torrent, and Void Blast reward deliberate burst windows.

  • Voidweaver hero tree
  • Stat priority: Intellect > Haste
  • Interrupt: Silence

Multi-target: Archon

Archon is a viable Halo-led alternative when the encounter's multi-target cadence favors it.

  • Archon hero tree

FAQ

3 quick answers

Which hero tree should I start with?

Start with Voidweaver for most raid fights and keys. Use Archon when Halo's cadence and multi-target profile are better for the specific encounter.

When should I cast Shadow Word: Madness?

Spend on it when it is not active, is about to expire, or you are about to cap Insanity. In three-target builds, apply it to a new target as resources allow.

Which races are best?

Racial damage differences are very small. For raid mobility, Goblin, Dracthyr, and Void Elf are practical choices; Night Elf or Dwarf bring valuable Mythic+ utility depending on the season.
