Midnight Season 2

Every pet does the same damage.

That is the sentence that makes the whole subject tractable, and almost nobody leads with it. There is no best damage pet to chase. Pets are separated by utility alone, you have five stable slots, and the only real question is which five abilities you want to be holding.

Below: the three specs, the seven family abilities ranked by how often they change a pull, and all 13 exotic families that only Beast Mastery can tame.

The three specs

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

Any pet can be set to any of these at a Stable Master, independent of its family. The family decides which extra ability you get; the spec decides the rest.

Ferocity

Active:
Primal Rage - the pet's version of Bloodlust or Heroism
Passive:
4% Leech

Bring one. A Ferocity pet means your group always has Bloodlust, whatever else it is missing, and the Leech is why this is also the open-world default.

Tenacity

Active:
3% damage reduction
Passive:
5% Health

The survivability spec, and what you want on a pet you are asking to hold something.

Cunning

Active:
Master's Call - stops movement-impairing effects for 4 seconds
Passive:
8% Speed

Master's Call is a snare and root break you can cast on somebody else, which is a real utility button rather than a pet stat.

The seven family abilities, most to least useful

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

The ORDER is one experienced hunter's ranking, not a measured result - that is what the tag means. The membership is not opinion: all 60 family assignments here were checked against this site's own 61-family pet data, and all 60 matched.

  1. 1

    Mortal Wounds

    Beast Mastery only: Devilsaur, Whiptail

Reduces the effectiveness of healing the target receives for 10 seconds.

Top of the list because of Mythic+. Any pack with a mob that heals itself is a pack where this shortens the pull, and no other pet ability changes a dungeon run that directly.

Any spec can tame: Carrion Bird, Direhorn, Hydra, Hyena, Lizard, Raptor, Riverbeast, Rodent, Scorpid, Wasp.

  2. 2

    Defense

Beast Mastery only: Carapid, Core Hound, Shale Beast

Reduces the pet's damage taken by 50% for 12 seconds.

The other Mythic+ pick. It is what lets the pet taunt a tank buster off your actual tank and live through it, which is a trick most hunters never learn they have.

Any spec can tame: Boar, Beetle, Mechanical, Scalehide, Turtle.

  3. 3

    Magic Defense

Reduces the pet's magic damage taken by 70% for 8 seconds.

One family carries it. Situational, but on magic-heavy pulls it is stronger than the general Defense cooldown. See the note about this family's exotic status below.

Any spec can tame: Lesser Dragonkin.

  4. 4

    Dodge

Increases the pet's dodge chance by 30% for 20 seconds.

Physical mitigation with a long window, but it is a chance rather than a guarantee.

Any spec can tame: Cat, Courser, Dragonhawk, Feathermane, Fox, Hopper, Monkey, Serpent, Wind Serpent.

  5. 5

    Pet Dispel

Beast Mastery only: Water Strider, Spirit Beast

Removes 1 Disease, 1 Magic, and 1 Poison effect from the pet.

Read the wording carefully: it cleanses the PET, not you and not the group. Useful when a fight puts a debuff on your pet, and no help at all otherwise.

Any spec can tame: Bat, Moth, Ray, Sporebat, Stag, Waterfowl.

  6. 6

    Slow

Beast Mastery only: Aqiri, Chimaera, Worm

Reduces the target's movement speed by 50% for 6 seconds.

The most common ability by far, which is also why it is rarely the reason to pick a family - you will have it by accident.

Any spec can tame: Basilisk, Bird of Prey, Blood Beast, Crab, Crocolisk, Hound, Mammoth, Spider, Tallstrider, Warp Stalker, Wolf.

  7. 7

    Triggered Defense

Beast Mastery only: Clefthoof, Pterrordax, Stone Hound

When the pet drops below 40% health, reduces its damage taken by 60% for 15 seconds.

Last because you do not control when it fires. A cooldown you can press beats a stronger one that waits for the pet to be nearly dead.

Any spec can tame: Bear, Camel, Gorilla, Gruffhorn, Oxen.

The practical read for Mythic+: Mortal Wounds for packs with a mob that heals itself, and Defense for dungeons where you want the pet to taunt a tank buster off your tank.

The exotic families, and what only they can do

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

Exotic beasts are Beast Mastery's alone. Every one carries a third ability no other family has - that ability is the reason to spend a slot. All 13 are below with their exotic ability quoted from the site's pet data, which was reconciled from two independent live enumerations.

FamilyDefault specExotic abilityWhat it does
AqiriCunningDune StriderPassive: increases the aqiri's movement speed by 30%
CarapidTenacityCalcified CarapacePassive: reduces physical damage taken, scaling with the carapid's total health
ChimaeraFerocityFroststorm BreathChannels a frozen breath attack, dealing Froststorm damage (scales with ranged attack power and Versatility) every 2 sec for 8 sec to all enemies within 12 yards (matches Petopia live text, fetched 2026-08-25).
ClefthoofFerocityBlood of the RhinoPassive: 10% additional armor and healing received increased by 20%
Core HoundFerocityMolten HideWhen the core hound takes melee attacks, it infuses its hide with molten lava, causing Fire damage (scales with attack power) to all further melee attackers for 10 sec.
DevilsaurFerocityFeastDevours a nearby Humanoid or Beast corpse, healing 20% of max health and restoring 20 Focus over time (1 min cooldown)
PterrordaxCunningUpdraftSlows the fall speed of both the pet and the hunter for 30 sec
Shale BeastCunningShimmering ShalePassive: reduces magic damage taken, scaling with the shale beast's total health
Spirit BeastTenacitySpirit MendHeals the current friendly target instantly, plus additional healing over 10 sec; healing scales with the hunter's attack power (30 sec cooldown).
Stone HoundTenacityEternal GuardianReturns your pet to life with full health when used (8 min cooldown)
Water StriderCunningSurface TrotAllows the hunter and the pet to walk on water; any damage cancels the effect
WhiptailNew in MidnightFerocityShadow JumpSteps through the shadows and pounces, teleporting behind the target and slowing it by 80% for 1 sec
WormTenacityBurrow AttackBurrows and shakes the ground above for 8 sec, dealing area damage (channeled, 14 sec cooldown)

Worth taming for the ability alone

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.
  • Aqiri - Dune Strider - the pet moves 30% faster

Best on bosses that move a lot or spread the raid out, because a pet that arrives late is a pet doing nothing.

  • Pterrordax - Updraft - slow fall

Adds distance to a Disengage and takes the damage out of the landing.

  • Stone Hound - Eternal Guardian - the pet resurrects itself, on an 8 minute cooldown

Every pet resurrection you do not cast is a global you spend on the fight instead.

  • Spirit Beast - Spirit Mend - an instant heal plus a heal over time

Small, but it is throughput your healer did not have to spend, and occasionally it is the difference between living and dying.

  • Clefthoof - Blood of the Rhino - 10% more armor and 20% more healing received

The open-world pet. Set it to Ferocity so the Leech compounds with the extra healing, and it will hold almost anything.

Two stables that work

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

Five slots. These are real stables rather than a theoretical best, offered as starting points to change rather than copy.

Utility-focused

  1. Tenacity Aqiri
  2. Cunning Aqiri
  3. Ferocity Aqiri
  4. Tenacity Raptor - Mortal Wounds
  5. Tenacity Scalehide - Defense

Three Aqiri covers all three specs on one exotic body, then the last two slots buy the two abilities that matter in keys.

Coverage-focused

  1. Tenacity Turtle - Defense
  2. Tenacity Raptor - Mortal Wounds
  3. Ferocity Scalehide - Defense
  4. Cunning Raptor - Mortal Wounds
  5. Ferocity Capybara - Mortal Wounds

Doubles up on the two useful abilities across different specs, so you never have to choose between the ability and the spec.

Interdimensional Companion Repository

A portable stable. Buy one on the auction house or craft it as an engineer.

Swapping a pet or a pet spec without walking to a Stable Master is the difference between adapting per pull and not bothering.

What checking this turned up

Credit: Petopia, via the operator's stable notes. Checked against src/data/hunter-pets.generated.ts (61 families, reconciled 2026-08-25) on 2026-09-06. Where the two disagreed, both are shown rather than one being quietly picked.

  • Is Lesser Dragonkin exotic?

unconfirmed. We could not confirm this. It is shown so you know the gap exists, not as a recommendation.

The source lists it under exotic pets. hunter-pets.generated.ts records exotic: false, and notes it is gated by the tome How to Train a Dragonkin rather than by Beast Mastery - a tome gate is not an exotic gate. Both agree exactly on the ability itself: Shimmering Scales, magic damage taken reduced 70% for 8 seconds. Unresolved here: Petopia was unreachable when this was checked, so the flag is shown as the site's data has it, with the disagreement stated.

  • Tailstrider is Tallstrider

derived. Calculated from verified rules. The arithmetic is ours; the inputs are not.

The source spells it Tailstrider. The family is Tallstrider - the large flightless birds. Corrected here; the ability assignment was right.

  • Pterrodax is Pterrordax

derived. Calculated from verified rules. The arithmetic is ours; the inputs are not.

Two r's. Corrected here so the name matches the pet database and in-game search.

  • All 60 family assignments were verified

derived. Calculated from verified rules. The arithmetic is ours; the inputs are not.

Every family named against every ability above was checked against hunter-pets.generated.ts, which was itself built from two independent live enumerations. All 60 matched. The Pet Dispel group is worded 'removes 1 Disease, 1 Magic, and 1 Poison effect from the pet' in the site data and 'Remove 1 disease, magic, and poison effect from the pet' in the source - the same rule.

The pet database backing this holds 61 families and 144 abilities. Browse it ->
