Midnight content update · announced 2026-09-12

Talebound is the roguelike Midnight did not have

A new game mode arriving in the Echoes of the Worldcore content update. You are pulled into a Storyteller's dark tales as one of three mode-only classes, run themed levels of enemies, bosses, puzzles and treasure, and rest in the village of Quillgrave between runs.

The short answer

Three classes, four tales, one village

Pick Slayer, Inquisitor or Witch, walk out of Quillgrave into one of four stories, and fight, jump and dodge your way through it for relics and rewards. Nothing about your main character carries in, and nothing carries out except the transmog, decor and mount. It is not on the PTR yet; Blizzard's window for that is October.

What Blizzard has said

Everything below except the patch number is from Blizzard's own announcement. The number is how outlets refer to the update and is tagged as a press estimate.

  • A new game mode, solo or with friends

Themed levels filled with enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasure, relics and rewards, played alone or cooperatively. Every class in it can double jump, dodge and guard, so positioning matters more than a rotation.

  • Three classes: Slayer, Inquisitor, Witch

Mode-only classes with their own ability lists, separate from your character's class.

  • Four stories at launch

Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood, Greywake's Expedition, and Grove of the Night Court.

  • Quillgrave is the hub

A lantern-lit village where you rest between runs. Its four vendors carry the progression: the Arcanist sells potions, draughts and flasks, the Scribe talents that change your abilities, the Outfitter starting health, damage, energy and focus, and the Antiquarian passives that change how a tale can be approached.

  • Rewards: a transmog set, housing items, and a mount

Ensemble: Witch Hunter's Shadow Attire, housing decor, and the Shadowbound Storybook mount.

  • Numbered 12.1.7 by outlets

Blizzard's post names the content update, Echoes of the Worldcore, without a patch number. Coverage out of BlizzCon calls it 12.1.7.

    • Shrapnel Round
    • Throwing Knives
    • Silver Bolt

    • Purify
    • Condemn
    • Denounce
    • Light's Wrath
    • Rapture
    • Radiant Burst
  • Witch

Lightning, poison, spiders, moonlight, thorns and ravens: the darker, spell-driven style.

    • Brewing Storm
    • Bubbling Cauldron
    • Feline Communion
    • Winter Spiders
    • Moonlight Ravens
    • Thorns

Each class opens with a three-hit sequence (Slash, Purify, Brewing Storm) and builds out from there. Numbers, cooldowns and how the three compare wait for the PTR build.

The four stories at launch

  1. 1Darkhaven
  2. 2Greenthistle Wood
  3. 3Greywake's Expedition
  4. 4Grove of the Night Court

Between runs you are in Quillgrave, a lantern-lit village that holds the progression. Four vendors carry it:

  • Arcanist - potions, draughts and flasks to find through the tale
  • Scribe - talents that change the abilities you fight with
  • Outfitter - starting health, damage, energy and focus
  • Antiquarian - passives that change how a tale can be approached

Blizzard described what each vendor sells, not what you pay them with, so the currency and how fast it accrues are still open.
