Midnight Season 2

Ruby Whelp Shell: how to train it

Six trainings, one a day, and no way we know of to take one back. Get the order wrong and the mistake costs you a week, which is why the tooltip saying your whelpling "will try to be helpful" is the least helpful sentence in the game.

Every guide gives you a place to stand. This one gives you the rule the game is actually checking, so you can train it anywhere, and then the places to stand anyway.

The short answer

Ruby Life Poolsilvl 334

Drops from Melidrussa Chillworn, the first boss of Ruby Life Pools, at a reported 29.28%. Use it on a target that matches the mode you want: the game counts units within 6 yards of that target, fewer than three teaches the single-target version and three or more teaches the area one. 6 trainings, one per day.

It is a Dragonflight trinket and it is current loot

Both halves of that are true, and the first half is why people skip it. Ruby Life Pools is in the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ pool, so the trinket drops at current item level from its first boss. The live tooltip on 2026-09-08 reads item level 334 at Myth 6/6, with 179 primary stat.

The one sentence that replaces the whole table

The game is not checking which city you are in. It counts how many units sit within 6 yards of your target, and asks the same question three times: about enemies, about friendly NPCs, then about you and your allies. Fewer than three teaches the single-target mode. Three or more teaches the area mode.

That is worth knowing because every published recipe sends you to Valdrakken, which is a Dragonflight hub, for a trinket you are training in a Midnight season. The recipes still work and they are below. You are simply not required to use them.

All six modes

The rule is what the game tests. The recipe is a reliable way to satisfy it, and it is technique rather than documentation, so the two carry different tags.

  1. Fire Shot

    Damage

Single-target damage on the whelpling's own schedule.

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

The rule: Target a hostile enemy with strictly fewer than 3 total enemies within 6 yards of the target, counting the target itself.

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

How to do it: Find an isolated mob and target it.

  2. Lobbing Fire Nova

    Damage

Area damage around the whelpling's target.

The rule: Target a hostile enemy with 3 or more total enemies within 6 yards of the target, counting the target itself.

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

How to do it: Target the cleave target dummies in Valdrakken, which stand inside 6 yards of each other.

  3. Curing Whiff

    Healing

    Single-target healing.

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

The rule: Target a friendly NPC with strictly fewer than 3 friendly healable NPCs within 6 yards of that target.

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

How to do it: Target Alexstrasza while nobody is near her. Any of the other Dragon Aspects works, since the test is about who is standing next to them.

  4. Mending Breath

    Healing

    Area healing.

The rule: Target a friendly NPC with 3 or more friendly NPCs within 6 yards of that target.

How to do it: Target one of the clustered healing target dummies in Valdrakken.

  5. Sleepy Ruby Warmth

    Stat buff

A critical strike buff, reported as lasting 12 seconds.

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

The rule: Target yourself with strictly fewer than 3 allies within 6 yards of you, counting yourself.

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

How to do it: Stand somewhere empty and target yourself.

  6. Under Red Wings

    Stat buff

A haste buff, reported as lasting 12 seconds.

verified. Transcribed from a primary source: a Blizzard post, patch note, or the game itself.

The rule: Target yourself with 3 or more allies within 6 yards of you, counting yourself.

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

How to do it: Stand inside the cluster of healing target dummies in Valdrakken and cast it on yourself. The dummies count.

What to spend your six days on

Every source hedges here, and the honest reason is that the proc rate decides whether this trinket is worth a slot and nobody publishes a measured one. Players logging it in 12.1.0 report better than one proc a minute on some pulls and one every two minutes on others. So this is about which mode survives that variance.

  • If you want the least disappointing outcome

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

A stat buff, so either Sleepy Ruby Warmth or Under Red Wings

A buff pays out whatever the pull looks like. The damage modes depend on the whelpling picking a target you would have wanted hit, and on the fight still being there when it decides to act.

  • If you push Mythic+ and want the damage

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

    Lobbing Fire Nova

Keys are packs. The area mode fires on the same trash the rest of your damage is going into, which is where the trinket's output can actually matter.

  • If you raid single target

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

    Fire Shot

A boss is one enemy, so the area mode has nothing extra to hit and the single-target mode is the only damage that lands where the fight is.

  • If you heal

unconfirmed. We could not confirm this. It is shown so you know the gap exists, not as a recommendation.

Mending Breath, or Under Red Wings if you would rather have throughput of your own

Nothing published separates these for healers with evidence. Both are defensible and the choice is yours; this page will not invent a ranking for it.

Questions people actually ask

How do you train the Ruby Whelp Shell?
Use the trinket while targeting something that matches the mode you want. The game checks how many units are within 6 yards of your target: fewer than three teaches the single-target version, three or more teaches the area version. It has a one day cooldown, so each training costs a day.
How many times can you train the Ruby Whelp Shell?
Six times in total, one per day, so a fully trained trinket takes six days. Whether all six can go into one ability is not documented anywhere we could find, and we will not guess at it.
Where does the Ruby Whelp Shell drop?
Melidrussa Chillworn, the first boss of Ruby Life Pools, at a reported 29.28% drop chance. Ruby Life Pools is in the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ pool, so it drops at current item level.
Is the Ruby Whelp Shell still good in Midnight Season 2?
It drops at item level 334 at Myth 6/6, so it is current-season loot rather than a Dragonflight leftover. Whether it beats your alternatives depends on its proc rate, which players logging it in 12.1 report as inconsistent: better than one proc per minute on some pulls, one every two minutes on others.
Do you have to go to Valdrakken to train it?
No. Valdrakken is convenient because its target dummies are already arranged in a cluster and on their own, but the game is only counting units within 6 yards of your target. Any grouped dummies train the area modes and any lone target trains the single-target ones.
What are the six Ruby Whelpling abilities?
Fire Shot for single-target damage, Lobbing Fire Nova for area damage, Curing Whiff for single-target healing, Mending Breath for area healing, Sleepy Ruby Warmth for a critical strike buff, and Under Red Wings for a haste buff.

What we could not confirm

  • Whether one ability can take all six trainings, or whether each caps at a lower rank, is not documented on Wowhead, Warcraft Wiki or Method. Somebody who has spent all six on one mode can settle it in the comments.

  • The 12 second buff durations are as reported by third-party guides rather than read off a tooltip, because the buff spells are not in the item's own tooltip data.

  • Proc rate is the number that decides whether this trinket is worth an equip slot, and no source publishes a measured rate. The player accounts below are the best available and they disagree with each other.

  • There is no way to reset a training. If that is wrong, it would change the advice on this page completely, so tell us.
