Hunter · Midnight

The beasts worth going out to find.

Most pets you can tame on the walk to a dungeon. These are the other kind: one named spawn in one corner of one zone, sometimes on a sixteen-hour timer, sometimes with three other hunters already parked on it. Beast Mastery gets 13 families nobody else can touch, and the spirit beasts are why a lot of hunters picked the spec in the first place.

The 13 families only you can use

Exotic Beasts is a Beast Mastery passive learned at level 10. Survival cannot tame these, and a Survival hunter who tries to summon one gets "You are unable to control exotic creatures". Marksmanship has had no pet of any kind since Patch 11.1.0.

Aqiri

Cunning

Signature: Dune Strider - increases the pet's movement speed by 30%, passively and permanently. No cooldown, nothing to press, it just runs.

This is the speed build.

Why it earns the slot

Cunning already hands you Pathfinding for a flat 8% movement bonus and Master's Call to strip roots and snares off yourself and a friendly target, and Dune Strider stacks another 30% on the pet on top of it. In a battleground that combination means the bug gets to the flag carrier before anyone else does, keeps Tendon Rip on him, and Master's Call peels your healer out of a Frost Nova on the same global. Solo, it is the family that stops you resummoning a pet that fell six pulls behind. Correction to the working list: Silithid is not a separate exotic family and has not been one since Patch 9.0.1, when Aqiri replaced it outright. The silithid models all live inside Aqiri now, which is why the Dune Strider tooltip still reads 'Increases the Silithid's movement speed by 30%' rather than the Aqiri's. Blizzard renamed the family and never went back for the tooltip.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Tendon Rip, a 50% movement slow for 6 sec.

Silithus is the collector's zone and it is unusually generous, because seven of the family's unique looks sit on named rares there and in Uldum. The Rugged Silithids are the prizes: Qroshekx carries the Rugged Black look in Hive'Ashi, Xaarshej the Rugged Purple in Hive'Zora, and Ssinkrix the Rugged Teal in Hive'Regal, all three rare elites around level 45. Below them are three Damaged Silithid Colossi, cracked and battle-worn versions of the big colossus model, one look each on Manax in Hive'Regal, Qu'rik in Hive'Ashi and Qem also in Hive'Ashi. The headliner is Lord Aj'qirai, a level 52 rare elite in the Chamber of the Moon in Uldum, and the only source of the Black Aqir Goliath, a tentacled N'Zoth-serving thing that looks nothing like the rest of the family. If you tame one Aqiri in your life, camp that one. The non-unique models still worth a look are the Kunchong from Pandaria, Sandreavers, and the pristine Silithid Colossi in blue, orange, pink and purple.

Carapid

Tenacity

Signature: Calcified Carapace - reduces physical damage taken by an amount that scales with the pet's maximum health, passively.

Physical mitigation, layered.

Why it earns the slot

Calcified Carapace is a passive that scales off the pet's total health pool rather than off your gear, so it grows with the pet instead of falling off, and it stacks under Bulwark's 50% active reduction and Tenacity's Endurance Training. Fortitude of the Bear on top of that is a 20% max-health bump plus an instant heal for the same amount, which is a genuine defensive cooldown for you, not just for the snail. This is the family you bring when you are soloing something old and overtuned and you want the pet to hold aggro through a physical enrage without you kiting. Its magic-damage counterpart in the same slot is the Shale Beast, which runs the identical formula against spell damage.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Bulwark, a flat 50% damage reduction for 12 sec.

Nothing here is a one-NPC exclusive, so the chase is model and colour rather than a single camp. Petopia's unique-rare-look list has no Carapid entry at all, which is worth knowing before you spend a night on one. The models that actually turn heads are the Gorms of Ardenweald in silver, purple and black, each with plain, horned and modified-head variants; the Helicids of Zereth Mortis, a proto-snail in bronze, pink and grey, and white and gold, with Orixal, the level 60 rare elite Gastropod Prime, carrying the Pink and Grey; and the Magma Snails in blue, orange, red and yellow. Rock Snails picked up new looks in Midnight and now come in a crystalline floral shell in seven colours, a plain floral shell, and a bare shell. Named rares worth a detour, all sharing looks with regular mobs: Slurpo, the Incredible Snail in the Waking Shores, Urmag, The Terror Below on K'aresh, and Gormbore and Deifir the Untamed in Ardenweald.

Chimaera

Ferocity

Signature: Froststorm Breath - the chimaera channels a frozen breath, dealing Froststorm damage every 2 sec for 8 sec to all enemies within 12 yards.

It is the only exotic ability in the game that is a real damage channel, and in a Ferocity body that also carries the raid lust.

Why it earns the slot

Froststorm Breath channels for 8 sec, ticking Froststorm damage every 2 sec to everything within 12 yards of the target, which makes it the one exotic that actually shows up on a meter in an add pack rather than just on your survival log. Ferocity brings Primal Rage, the 30% haste raid cooldown that Sates the group for 10 min, plus Predator's Thirst for 10% leech on you and the pet. If your group has no shaman, no mage and no evoker, this bird is your lust button. Also note the family boundary, because the working list had it wrong: warcraft.wiki.gg states plainly that 'the chimaera family includes chimaeras, rylaks, and flayedwings'. Rylaks are Chimaera, not Pterrordax. Pterrordax is its own separate exotic family further down.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Frost Breath, a 50% slow for 6 sec.

Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, added the Skyfiend Chimaeras, and they are the only brand-new exotic look in the patch. Petopia describes the model as 'something between a wind serpent and a snake-headed chimaera' and lists five tameable colours: Green, Crimson, Purple, Pale Pink and Orange. They are 12.1 content, so they are level 90 and they are where everyone is right now. Green, Purple and Pale Pink are the common ones, spread across the Skybridge and Witherbark Bluffs in Zul'Aman and the Vaults of Atal'Utek and the Serpent's Tail on The Coiled Isle. Crimson is much tighter, appearing on the Caustic Abductor in the Serpent's Tail and on Gorged Skyfiend, a level 90 elite at the Seal of Wrath. Orange is the hard one, sitting on that same Gorged Skyfiend, on Looming Mutagenitor, a rare elite in The Forum, and on Twinfang Harrower inside the Altar of Fangs dungeon. For unique looks on one named NPC, the family has four: Alash'anir, Venom and Storm, a level 52 rare elite in Darkshore; Amaukwa, The Breath of Moon, in Shadowmoon Valley on Draenor; Tura'aka in Draenor's Nagrand; and The Evalcharr in Azshara. Beyond those, Death Chimaeras come in eleven horned and hornless variants, and the Rylaks run black, green, pale, purple, red, silver and yellow.

Clefthoof

Ferocity

Signature: Blood of the Rhino - the clefthoof has 10% additional armor and increases the effectiveness of healing received by 20%.

A lust on a pet that refuses to die.

Why it earns the slot

Blood of the Rhino is quiet but it does two things at once, adding 10% armor and boosting every heal the clefthoof receives by 20%, which means your Mend Pet, a Spirit Mend from a stabled friend, or a healer's incidental cleave all land harder on it. Layer that under Thick Hide firing automatically at 40% health and you have a Ferocity pet that survives the pull it is supposed to die on, while still holding Primal Rage for the raid. This is the practical answer to 'I want the lust but my pet keeps exploding in Mythic+'.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Thick Hide, a triggered 60% damage reduction for 15 sec when the pet drops below 40% health, once per 120 sec.

No unique-look rares here either, so pick a model and go. The White Draenor Clefthoof is the classic status tame, with Blue, Grey-Brown, Red and Tawny-Brown alongside it, plus Saddled versions of all five if you like the tack. Iron Horde Clefthooves come in a single plated Iron look and read as siege equipment with legs. If you want something leaner, the family also holds Rhinos in black, brown and light grey, and Woolly Rhinos in brown, grey, grey-black and pale brown. The named rares are camps rather than exclusives: Nakk the Thunderer and Bergruu, both level 40 rare elites in Draenor's Nagrand, share the Red Draenor Clefthoof; Icehorn in Borean Tundra and Gal'dorak in Winterspring share the Pale Brown Woolly Rhino; Coldstomp the Griever and Giantbane roam Frostfire Ridge; and Bornak the Gorer and Bruiser hold down Winterspring.

Core Hound

Ferocity

Signature: Molten Hide - when the core hound takes melee attacks it infuses its hide with molten lava, dealing Fire damage to all further melee attackers for 10 sec. Can only activate every 60 sec.

Punishment for melee.

Why it earns the slot

Molten Hide infuses the hound's hide when it takes a melee hit, and every further melee attacker then eats fire damage for 10 sec, on a 60 sec internal cooldown. It is not a huge number but it fires exactly when the pet is being swarmed, which is the moment you wanted extra damage anyway. Pair it with Obsidian Skin's 50% cut and the two-headed dog holds a pack while Ferocity keeps Primal Rage in your back pocket. Mostly, though, people tame core hounds because a two-headed lava dog is a two-headed lava dog and has been the hunter status symbol since Molten Core.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Obsidian Skin, a flat 50% damage reduction for 12 sec.

Two named rares carry looks nobody else has in a practical sense, and both are old-world camps. Magmagan is the Orange Core Hound, a rare in the Fields of Honor in Burning Steppes, though that colour also turns up on Brimstone Hounds and the Molten Core trash if you would rather not wait. Chromehound in Blackrock Mountain is the interesting one: it is a Drakeadon, the Chromaggus model, and it is the only rare that puts that shape on a leash. Uvuros and Spawn of Uvuros in Outland's Shadowmoon Valley hold the Green Core Hound, with Svarnos in Tol Barad as backup. Beyond the classics, the family also holds Blaze Hounds, which Petopia calls 'a sleeker, one-headed version of the core hound', found in orange around Zaralek Cavern's Molten Overflow and Igira's Watch; a single White Guardian Hound; and Drake Hounds. There is one Classic Core Hound NPC that was never updated to the modern model, which makes the Classic Orange look a genuine oddity.

Devilsaur

Ferocity

Signature: Feast - the devilsaur feasts on a nearby Humanoid or Beast corpse within 5 yards, healing it for 20% of its maximum health and restoring 20 focus over 6 sec.

Two jobs, both real.

Why it earns the slot

In PvP, Monstrous Bite is your healing-reduction slot and it is applied by the pet, so it costs you nothing in your own rotation. Out in the world, Feast is the sleeper: the devilsaur eats a nearby Humanoid or Beast corpse within 5 yards and heals itself for 20% of its maximum health while restoring 20 focus over 6 sec, which is a free full-ish heal between pulls in any zone with bodies on the ground and no downtime at all. Anyone who has ground reputation on a devilsaur knows the rhythm of pulling toward the last corpse rather than away from it. Ferocity keeps Primal Rage available on top.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Monstrous Bite, the Mortal Wounds effect, cutting healing received on the target for 10 sec.

King Krush in Sholazar Basin is still the trophy, a level 20-30 rare and the only NPC carrying the Green Devilsaur. The other two unique looks are much bigger asks. Dunegorger Kraulok in The Bone Pit in Vol'dun is flagged Boss, not rare, and carries the Dark Skeletal Devilsaur, so you need Undead Taming before you even approach it. Tor'go, a level 80 rare elite at Ancient Falls in The Ringing Deeps, holds the Spectral Azerite Devilsaur, which is the closest the family gets to a ghost. Two gates to plan around before you travel. Skeletal Devilsaurs of any kind need Undead Taming, free for Forsaken and otherwise learned from a Simple Tome of Bone-Binding dropping off elites in Maldraxxus, Plaguefall and the Theater of Pain. Devilsaptors, new in Midnight, are plant beasts and need Florafaun taming from the tome Trials of the Florafaun Hunter, which Petopia says drops from at least some florafaun rares in Harandar; the Lightbloom look alone is worth the trip. The base Devilsaurs also picked up new looks in Midnight, and the family still carries Armoured, Horde and Classic models.

Pterrordax

Cunning

Signature: Updraft - your pet beats its powerful wings, slowing the fall speed of both itself and the hunter for 30 sec.

Updraft is a movement tool disguised as a pet ability.

Why it earns the slot

Your pet beats its wings and slows the fall speed of both itself and you for 30 sec, which is a slow fall on a class that otherwise has to go find an engineer or a mage. Anyone who has ridden a Skyriding line into a canyon and mistimed the pull-up understands why that matters. Cunning wraps it with Pathfinding and Master's Call, so the pterrordax build is 'never get stuck, never take fall damage, never get rooted'. Note the family boundary: this is not the same thing as a Rylak, which belongs to Chimaera. Feathermanes get Updraft too, as a bonus ability, but they are not an exotic family and they do not need Beast Mastery.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Ancient Hide, a triggered 60% damage reduction for 15 sec below 40% health, once per 120 sec.

The Zandalar Pterrordax model is the good one, and it comes in fourteen tameable colours including Pale Lilac, Teal and Dark Green, so there is a version to match almost any transmog. None of them is exclusive to a single rare, which is why Pterrordax has no entry on Petopia's unique-look list, but several rares are still worth the flight. Bramblewing is a rare elite at Skyrender Eyrie in Zuldazar carrying the Blue. Kal'draxa, Bane of Blood Trolls, sits at Torga's Rest in Nazmir with the Grey. Ak'tar, Slateclaw Matriarch, holds the Yellow-Grey at Redrock Mesa in Vol'dun. Ji'arak Broodling in the Savagelands is a spawned rare elite, so it needs setup rather than patience, and Pit Beast at the Gorian Proving Grounds in Draenor's Nagrand is the odd one out geographically. Armoured and Harnessed Pterrordaxes exist with saddles and barding, though only two of those combinations are actually tameable and the rest are catalogued as unused.

Shale Beast

Cunning

Signature: Shimmering Shale - reduces magic damage taken by an amount that scales with the pet's maximum health, passively.

Shimmering Shale is Calcified Carapace's twin, running the exact same formula against magic damage instead of physical.

Why it earns the slot

That makes the shale beast the answer to a specific problem rather than a general one: a caster pack, an old raid boss whose only real output is a spell, a Mythic+ affix week where the damage coming at your pet is all schools and no swings. Cunning also gives you Master's Call, which is a bigger deal on a slow, ground-bound pet than people expect. Between Carapid and Shale Beast you can cover both damage types with two stable slots and no thought.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Solid Shell, a flat 50% damage reduction for 12 sec.

This family is a gem case. Shale Worms come in Amber, Amethyst, Azerite, Garnet, Topaz and Turquoise, and Shale Spiders in green, orange, purple, red and yellow. The named rares are old and beloved rather than exclusive. Jadefang in the Crumbling Depths in Deepholm is the famous one, a Green Shale Spider that requires an actual climb to reach and has been a rite of passage since Cataclysm. Terborus at Scoured Reach in Deepholm carries the Topaz Shale Worm, sharing the look with the Deepholm gyreworms. Glint sits at the Circle of Inner Binding in Arathi Highlands, Crystalfang inside Blackrock Mountain, and Scintillex out in Dustwallow Marsh. The Azerite Shale Worm is the one to hunt if you want something that reads as modern, appearing on Shalebiter in The MOTHERLODE and on the Azerite Gorger at Nordrassil in Mount Hyjal.

Spirit Beast

Tenacity

Signature: Spirit Mend - the Spirit Beast heals the current friendly target for a large instant amount plus an additional amount over 10 sec.

Spirit Mend is the reason Beast Mastery exists as an offspec for a lot of players.

Why it earns the slot

It heals the current friendly target for a large instant chunk plus a second chunk over 10 sec, and 'friendly target' means you, your tank, or the healer who just got globalled. No other exotic ability puts a real heal on someone else's health bar. In a raid it is a free external you can hold for a soak. Soloing, it is the difference between a hard pull and a corpse run. Tenacity's Endurance Training and Fortitude of the Bear stack behind it, and since 11.1 you can respec the pet Ferocity at a stable if you would rather carry Primal Rage and keep the ghost skin. This family is also the single most contested in the game socially, because the looks are unrepeatable and the camps are legendary.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Spirit Pulse, which removes one Disease, Magic and Poison effect from the pet. It also carries a bonus ability, Spirit Walk, which is Prowl by another name.

Eleven looks in this family exist on exactly one named rare each, more than any other exotic. Loque'nahak, Mate of Har'koa, in Sholazar Basin is the Spirit Leopard and the oldest prestige tame in the game. Gondria in Zul'Drak is the Purple Spectral Saber Tiger; Magria and Ankha, both in Mount Hyjal, are the Blue and Pale versions of the same model, so a Hyjal circuit can pay off twice. Skoll in The Storm Peaks carries the Stormy Dark Blue Saber Worg, crackling with lightning. Arcturis in Grizzly Hills is the Spirit Bear. Ban'thalos, high above Mount Hyjal, is the Spectral Green Owl. Ghostcrawler in Abyssal Depths is a Spectral Spiked Crab and is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Karoma, The Wolf Spirit, in Twilight Highlands holds the Spectral Wolf; Bulvinkel in Stormheim the Spirit Elderhorn; and Lightning Paw in Duskwood the Lightning Spirit Fox. Two more that are not on the unique list but belong in any serious hunt: Gara, the Shadowy Draenor Wolf in Shadowmoon Valley on Draenor, whose look is shared only with the Lost Netherwolf; and Hati, who is not camped at all but questlined. Hati starts from the Image of Mimiron at Tradewinds Market in Boralus or the Grand Bazaar in Dazar'alor, runs through the Temple of Storms and Silithus, and finishes in the Spark of Imagination outside Ulduar. Bring an empty stable slot, because the reformation quest needs one. Afterwards Thorim's Thunderspark stays in the Temple of Storms permanently, letting you come back and tame the other five aspects: Titanstrike silver-blue, Eaglewatch black, Elekk's Thunder dark grey, Boarshot Cannon brown, Serpentbite dark blue, and Hati's Sacrifice grey. Beyond the named rares the family holds Astral Cloud Serpents, Mana Sabers out of Suramar, Spectral Armoredons, Spectral Gryphons, Storm Wolves off the Isle of Dorn, and Stormrooks with five-part randomised beak, crown, brow, cheek and tail combinations.

Stone Hound

Tenacity

Signature: Eternal Guardian - when used, your pet will miraculously return to life with full health.

Eternal Guardian is a battle rez for your pet.

Why it earns the slot

Press it and the hound returns to life at full health, which in practice means you never eat the Revive Pet cast in a fight where the pet dying is the thing that kills you. Chain that with Stone Armor, a triggered cooldown that trades peak mitigation for a fifteen-second regeneration tick, and the stone hound is the most self-sufficient body in the exotic list. This is the answer to the user's 'Quilen' entry, incidentally: Petopia's family page states outright that 'In Shadowlands this family changed its name from Quilen to Stone Hounds'. Quilen are not a separate exotic family, they are the flagship model inside this one.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Stone Armor, and it is the odd one out among triggered defenses: 40% damage reduction rather than 60%, but with 3% of maximum health regenerated every second for 15 sec.

Exactly one look in this family exists on a single named rare, and it is a good one. Anh-De the Loyal, a level 50 rare in Mistfall Village in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, carries the Gold and Brown Quilen with Grey Armour and nobody else does. The rest of the Quilen line is broad and beautiful without being exclusive: Amethyst, Jade, Sapphire, Grey Stone, Red, Auburn-Grey and Purple-Grey, plus Ornate variants of Amethyst, Jade, Jasper and Sapphire that read as temple statuary come to life. Armoured Quilen and Flying Armoured Quilen add wings and plate. The other half of the family is the Gargons of Revendreth, in black, dark brown, dark grey, grey, pale, stone and tan, plus two saddled versions, and those are the ones with a homework requirement: Gargon Taming from a Gargon Training Manual, which Petopia lists as a guaranteed drop from Huntmaster Petrus, a rare that can appear in the Witherfall Ruin area of south-east Revendreth. Petopia adds that the manual appears to be readable only at level 60, so a fresh character cannot shortcut it.

Water Strider

Cunning

Signature: Surface Trot - allows the Hunter and the Water Strider to walk across water. Any damage will cancel the effect.

Surface Trot lets the hunter and the strider walk on water, and any damage cancels it.

Why it earns the slot

That sounds like a novelty until you are crossing Nazjatar, or skipping a swim in a timed dungeon, or fishing a corpse run out of the middle of a lake. It is the last surviving player-facing water walking that does not sit on a mount, and it belongs to Beast Mastery alone. Combined with Cunning's Pathfinding and Master's Call, this is the traversal pet. Nobody is bringing a water strider for damage; they bring it because they got tired of swimming.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Soothing Waters, which removes one Disease, Magic and Poison effect from the pet.

Two unique-look rares, both Pandaria, both rare elites. Glimmer in The Jade Forest is the only Plated Red Water Strider in the game. Hexapos in the Dread Wastes is the only White Fen Strider. Neither is casual, and both are worth the wait if you care about a strider that does not look like every other strider. Midnight added the Mire Stalkers, which is where the current interest is: Blue, Olive, Purple and Red, spread across Harandar. The Olive is the tight one, appearing on the Mire Stalker and on Slewstalk, both elites in the Gloom Mire, while Blue and Purple show on the Scavenging Stalkers in The Grudge Pit, the Vale Fogstalker in the Vale of Mists, the Wandering Stalker at Nai'theren Grotto, and Torbrul. Older stock is still strong: Skitterflies in black, cyan, green, orange and yellow, Heavy Water Striders in five bold colours, Light Water Striders including a Coral, and Fen Striders in black, blue, green and white.

Whiptail

Ferocity

Signature: Shadow Jump - the whiptail steps through the shadows and pounces on their prey, teleporting behind them. Reduces the target's movement by 80% for 1 sec.

The newest exotic family in the game, added in Patch 12.0.1 on 2026-02-10, and it arrived loaded.

Why it earns the slot

Shadow Jump teleports the whiptail through the shadows to behind its target and cuts that target's movement speed by 80% for 1 sec, which is the only true gap-closer any pet has. In practice that means a pet that never spends four seconds running at a kiting caster, which matters more for real uptime than any passive on this list. Stack that on Serrated Strike for healing reduction, Prowl for the opener, and Ferocity for Primal Rage and 10% leech, and this is the most complete exotic package in 12.1. If you only train one new exotic this season, train this one.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Serrated Strike, the Mortal Wounds effect, cutting healing received for 10 sec. Whiptails carry three family abilities rather than the usual one: Serrated Strike, Shadow Jump, and Prowl. That makes them one of only three families that can stealth, alongside Cats and Spirit Beasts, whose Spirit Walk is Prowl under another name.

Two models, and the split between them is brutal. Shredclaws are everywhere in Voidstorm and come in Amber-Brown, Blue, Orange and Red-Grey, sitting on Ripfang Shredclaws in the Obscurion Citadel, the Gorging Pit pack, Stalking and Starving and Vicious Shredclaws across the zone, Den-Gorger Zitoc in the Den of Predaxus, Rampant Shredclaw at Nexus-Point Xenas, and Seething Shredclaws in the Bladeburrows. Barbtooth Bloodtracker, a spawned elite in the Midnight Delves, carries the Amber-Brown too. Grimlynxes are the opposite story. Petopia and warcraft.wiki.gg agree that Rhazul, a level 85-92 rare in Harandar, is currently the only tameable grimlynx, carrying the Grey and White Striped look. One rare, one look, one zone, in the newest content in the game. That makes Rhazul the single most contested exotic spawn in 12.1, and the Black and Blue, Black and Red, Brown and Amber and Dark Blue Striped grimlynxes are all catalogued as untameable, so there is no consolation prize.

Worm

Tenacity

Signature: Burrow Attack - the worm burrows into the earth and shakes the ground above, dealing Nature damage over 8 sec.

Burrow Attack is a damage cooldown on a Tenacity chassis, which is a combination nothing else on this list offers.

Why it earns the slot

The worm digs in and shakes the ground above, dealing Nature damage over 8 sec, and because it is ground-based it lands on everything standing on that patch rather than on a single target. Put it next to Endurance Training, Fortitude of the Bear and Acid Spit and you get a pet that tanks a pack, slows it, and contributes real damage while it does. It is also the ability with the best animation in the exotic list, for whatever that is worth, and it is worth something.

Family ability and the looks worth camping

Family ability: Acid Spit, a 50% movement slow for 6 sec.

Two unique-look rares, both classic camps. Bombyx is a level 35 rare elite along the Krasarang River in the Krasarang Wilds and is the only Purple Silkworm anywhere. Spirocula in the Eastern Plaguelands carries the Ghostly White Worm, which is a genuine ghost look on a non-Spirit-Beast family and is the more interesting of the two. Midnight was generous to this family: Mukleeches arrived in Black and Brown, Bronze and Green, Olive and Black, and Red and Green, and Consumptors in Black and White, Blue, Brown and Yellow-Brown, with the existing Tidal Worms picking up new looks on top. Older highlights are the Cosmic Worms in green and purple, the Jormungar, the Sea Slugs, and the Jawcrawlers, which come in four colours across four separate grasper configurations from full graspers down to none, so a Green Jawcrawler with No Graspers is a meaningfully different silhouette from a Green Jawcrawler with Full Graspers.

Read this before you fly anywhere

10 families are locked behind an item or a quest. Without it the tame bar never appears, and nothing in the game tells you why.

Trials of the Florafaun Hunter

Harandar

Unlocks: Florafaun (Carrion Bird, Devilsaur, Direhorn, Hopper, Hydra, Raptor, Scalehide, Serpent)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

This is Midnight's own taming tome, and it is the single most important item a hunter picks up in Harandar. It is a rare-quality, hunter-only, bind-on-pickup tablet (item 264895, required level 80) whose flavour text calls it a record of a haranir hunter's coming-of-age. Read it once and every hunter on the account can tame the plant-beasts of Harandar. The one skill unlocks eight distinct models across eight different pet families: Petalwings (Carrion Bird), Devilsaptors (Devilsaur, exotic), Chloroceroses (Direhorn), Potatoads (Hopper), Mandragoras (Hydra), Saptors (Raptor), Thornmaws (Scalehide), and Grovecrawlers (Serpent). It drops from Harandar's florafaun rares. Confirmed florafaun rares in the zone are Dracaena, Oro'ohna, Queen Lashtongue, and Stumpy, Terror of Harandar. Reported drop rates sit in the 2 to 4 percent band, though plenty of hunters get it off a first kill, so run the loop and do not despair.

Every hunter needs the tome, haranir included. The widely repeated claim that haranir hunters know florafaun taming by default is wrong: the item is usable by all races and there is no racial grant anywhere in the spell data. It is the tablet's flavour text that mentions haranir, and that is lore, not a mechanic. The second trap is the drop list itself. No source publishes a real drop table, and the five-name list doing the rounds includes Ha'kalawe and Pterrock, which are a sporebat and a ray - not florafaun at all, and neither carries the florafaun requirement on its own page. It also omits Stumpy, which does. Farm florafaun rares rather than a memorised list of five names.

Blood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers

Uldir (Nazmir)

Unlocks: Blood Beast

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Blood beasts arrived in patch 8.1 and the gate has never moved. Kill Zul in Uldir on Normal, Heroic, or Mythic and the tome is a guaranteed drop. Read it and the skill is account-wide forever. Midnight then quietly made this an active concern again: patch 12.0.1 added a whole new blood beast model, the Blistercreep, in five tameable glows (Black body with red glow, Brown with yellow, Copper with orange, Grey with blue, Grey with red). So a Battle for Azeroth raid drop is now the entry fee for a current-expansion look.

LFR does not drop it. Normal or above, no exceptions, and that catches every hunter who queues Raid Finder Uldir and wonders why the tome never appeared. Uldir is a solo clear at Midnight gear levels, so the only real cost is the walk. Note too that the tome is a one-time account unlock and the family itself is not exotic: blood beasts are a Tenacity skill family that any specialization can use once the tome is read, which is not true of the flashier families on this page.

Ancient Tome of Dinomancy

Isle of Giants, Pandaria

Unlocks: Direhorn

How to get it, and what goes wrong

A rare drop from Zandalari Dinomancers on the Isle of Giants. Reading it grants Ancient Zandalari Knowledge and lets you tame direhorns, which since Midnight also means Chloroceroses in Harandar. Zandalari troll hunters know it by default and never need the tome at all. Grind the Dinomancers on the Isle; they are the only source.

This is one of only three taming skills in the game that is NOT account-wide - the other two are Feathermane and Mechanical. Every new hunter you level has to farm the Isle of Giants again, which is a nasty surprise in an expansion where the Midnight tome next to it in the same tooltip window unlocks warband-wide. Plan for it before you commit to a fresh hunter for a chloroceros.

Tome of the Hybrid Beast

Trueshot Lodge

Unlocks: Feathermane

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Bought, not quested, from Pan the Kind Hand at Trueshot Lodge, the Legion hunter class hall in Highmountain. The Artifact weapon requirement is gone. What is not settled is the price: Warcraft Wiki records 10,000 gold, while the Legion-era listing is 1,000 Order Resources behind the class-mount achievement chain (A Glorious Campaign, Breaching the Tomb, Night of the Wilds). No source fetched this session confirms which is live in 12.1, so fly there expecting either. Notable feathermanes on the far side of that wall include Whirlwing, Mavarnir, Netherbeak in Azsuna, Skystormer in Feralas, and Lalathin in the Nighthold.

Two corrections worth having. First, the tome is Bind on Account, so once one hunter has unlocked it you can buy and mail extra copies to your other hunters - which matters, because the skill itself does not unlock account-wide. Second, older guides still say feathermanes are exotic and Beast Mastery only. That was true in Legion. Since Battle for Azeroth any spec can use them, and the current family listing files Feathermane under skill families, not exotic. Do not skip the family because a five-year-old guide told you to.

Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix

Dalaran (Broken Isles)

Unlocks: Mechanical

How to get it, and what goes wrong

An engineer-crafted item. The recipe comes from Xur'ios in Dalaran for 1 Curious Coin, and any engineer can make the Matrix for you. Use it and mechanicals open up: Haywire Battle-Chicken, A-Me 02, Silver Arachnodrone, Rush, War-Iron Axebeak, Mechanical Bunny, N.U.T.Z., the Iron Juggernaut, Tekton, and the Sabertrons. Gnome, goblin, and mechagnome hunters know the skill by default and never need the item.

Not account-wide, so each non-mechanical-race hunter needs their own Matrix. That is a real cost if you have three hunters. The other quiet gotcha is that the Matrix is the entry ticket to a whole cluster of challenge tames below - the Sabertron cave and the Iron Juggernaut build in particular - and hunters routinely do all the assembly work for those before discovering they cannot finish the tame.

Simple Tome of Bone-Binding

Maldraxxus and Plaguefall

Unlocks: Undead beasts (multiple families)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

A zone drop in Maldraxxus that also drops from bosses in Plaguefall. Item 183124, bind on pickup, added in patch 9.0.2. It unlocks undead appearances across a range of otherwise ordinary families rather than one family of its own, so the payoff is scattered across your existing stable options. Forsaken hunters know it by default. The unlock is account-wide.

Because it is a zone drop rather than a boss guarantee, people camp one mob type and conclude it is not dropping. Run Plaguefall instead - the bosses there are a bounded, repeatable source and the dungeon solos trivially at Midnight item levels. And it is worth pointing out that undead taming is one of those unlocks that quietly matters again in Midnight, since patch 12.0.1 added undead-flagged Amani Eagle looks to the world.

How to Train a Dragonkin

Valdrakken

Unlocks: Lesser Dragonkin (and vorquin, in the Stag family)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Reward from the quest Taming the Dragon...kin, which becomes available at Renown 23 with the Valdrakken Accord. Item 201791. It teaches lesser dragonkin taming and, importantly, also covers vorquin, which belong to the Stag family rather than to Lesser Dragonkin. Dracthyr hunters have the skill by default. Account-wide once learned.

It can only be learned on a hunter, unlike some tomes that any character can consume, so do not hand the quest in on your evoker and expect the unlock to propagate. The vorquin overlap is the part people miss - a hunter who wants a vorquin goes looking for a stag-taming tome that does not exist, when the dragonkin book they already own is the answer.

How to School Your Serpent

The Arboretum, Jade Forest

Unlocks: Cloud serpents (Lesser Dragonkin, and one Spirit Beast)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Purchased from San Redscale at the Arboretum in the Jade Forest for 50 gold, but you must be Exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent to buy it. Item 183123, Bind to Warband, and the skill applies to all hunters on the account. Pandaren hunters know it by default. Any class on the account can do the reputation and buy the book, then read it on a hunter.

The reputation is the whole cost and it is a daily-gated grind, not something you finish in an afternoon. Note also that cloud serpents mostly sit in the Lesser Dragonkin family but one of them, Elegon, is filed as a Spirit Beast, which means Beast Mastery only for that one. And the Ivory Cloud Serpent below needs this book plus a toy plus War Mode plus a Freezing Trap, so read the book long before you go anywhere near the Vale.

Gargon Training Manual

Revendreth

Unlocks: Stone Hound (gargon)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Drops from Huntmaster Petrus in Revendreth. Item 180705, uncommon quality, unique, bind on pickup. Read it and gargon taming unlocks account-wide.

The manual is only half the gate - you also have to be Beast Mastery to keep one, because gargons are Stone Hounds and Stone Hounds are exotic. Hunters farm Petrus in another spec, read the book, tame the gargon, and then find they cannot summon it; the error is 'You are unable to control exotic creatures'. Worth knowing that this is now a Survival-only surprise: Marksmanship has had no pet of any kind since Patch 11.1.0, so an MM hunter is not summoning anything, exotic or otherwise.

Ottuk Taming

Iskaara, Dragon Isles

Unlocks: Rodent (ottuk)

How to get it, and what goes wrong

Not a tome at all - this one is a questline. Reach Renown 11 with the Iskaara Tuskarr, then complete the Chieftain's Duty chain, which starts at A Lost Tribe and ends at While the Iron Is Hot. The skill then allows taming ottuks within the Dragon Isles. Account-wide.

Because it is a renown-plus-questline unlock rather than an item, there is nothing to loot, mail, or buy, and no way to shortcut it with gold. The redeeming detail is that it can be unlocked on a character of any class even though only hunters benefit - so if your main is a warrior sitting at Renown 11 with the chain half done, finish it there rather than dragging your hunter through the whole Iskaara reputation from scratch.

Spirit beast

25

Beast Mastery only, every one of them, and the reason half the spec's players picked it. Long timers, no announcements, and a lot of flying in circles.

Loque'nahak

Spirit BeastBM ONLYSholazar Basin

20.6, 70 / 30.4, 66.8 / 35.4, 30.2 / 51, 81.6 / 58.2, 22 / 66.2, 79 / 70.8, 71.2

The original.

The full route

Loque'nahak was the first tameable spirit beast in the game and he still sets the pattern for all of them: no fixed spawn point, no announcement, just a snow leopard sitting somewhere in a very large basin. Warcraft Wiki puts him on a six to ten hour respawn. Fly the ring of known points rather than camping one, because he can surface at any of them. He is the mate of Har'koa, the snow leopard loa up in Zul'Drak, and he keeps his own name when you tame him.

He is a criterion for the Northern Exposure achievement, which means every achievement hunter in Northrend kills him on sight.

What else goes wrong

Gondria, Skoll and Arcturis are not on that list; Loque'nahak is. That single line of achievement text is the reason his corpse is warm more often than his spawn is.

Gondria

Spirit BeastBM ONLYZul'Drak

61, 63.4 / 61.4, 61.6 / 63.2, 42.8 / 67.4, 77.6 / 69.4, 48.4 / 77.2, 69.4

A purple spectral saber that wanders eastern Zul'Drak.

The full route

Six known points, spread far enough apart that a lap takes real time. Retains her name after taming.

The good news is Gondria is not on the Northern Exposure list, so passing players have no reason to kill her. The bad news is the same thing that makes her survivable also makes her invisible to your planning: nobody reports her, so you are hunting a purple cat across a zone nobody else is in.

Skoll

Spirit BeastBM ONLYThe Storm Peaks

27.8, 50.4 / 30.2, 64.4 / 46.2, 64.4

Thorim's other wolf, the one who did not end up bound to an artifact weapon.

The full route

Warcraft Wiki gives him an 8 to 16 hour respawn across three known locations in Storm Peaks. Three points is short enough that a full sweep costs about ninety seconds on a flying mount, so this is a genuine camp rather than a patrol.

Eight to sixteen hours is a brutal window when you cannot see the clock. Storm Peaks is also heavy traffic for mount farmers and Loremaster stragglers, so a spawn that lands while you are logged off is somebody else's spirit beast.

Arcturis

Spirit BeastBM ONLYGrizzly Hills

30.4, 55.6 (near Amberpine Lodge)

The spirit bear, and the only spirit beast in the game confined to a single known spawn point.

The full route

He sits near Amberpine Lodge. His timer is variable and starts from the moment he is killed or tamed, and Warcraft Wiki notes that the timer does reset with server downs and maintenance.

One spawn point is a blessing and a curse.

What else goes wrong

Everyone who wants him knows exactly where to stand, so the camp is competitive. The maintenance reset is the exploitable part: log in right after a restart and the queue starts over for everybody.

21 more spirit beasts

Ghostcrawler

Spirit BeastBM ONLYAbyssal Depths (Vashj'ir)

12.8, 82.6 / 15, 77.4 / 19, 77.4 / 20, 58 / 22, 65 / 24.4, 80.4 / 28.2, 82.2 / 31.4, 80.6

A spectral deepsea crab named after Greg Street, patrolling the Abandoned Reef.

The full route

Thirteen recorded patrol points across the southern half of the zone. You need Vashj'ir opened up so you can actually move down there.

He phases in and out roughly every 15 to 30 seconds, and he keeps doing it while you are fighting him.

What else goes wrong

Losing your target mid-tame is normal, not a bug. Plan on restarting the cast more than once, and do not panic-blow cooldowns the first time he vanishes.

Karoma

Spirit BeastBM ONLYTwilight Highlands

49.2, 74.2 / 53.8, 53.2 / 54.2, 76.2 / 58.2, 63.6 / 59.2, 43.4 / 65.4, 60.2

The spectral wolf, modelled on the shaman spirit wolf summon.

The full route

He roams around the Devouring Breach east of Bloodgulch and northeast of the Crucible of Carnage, plus the ground south and southeast of the Dunwald Ruins. Sambas the lion works the northern half of the same zone, so a Twilight Highlands lap can pay out twice.

Karoma is the only hostile spirit beast in the game.

What else goes wrong

He opens on you rather than standing there politely, which means the fight starts before you have decided whether you want to tame or run. Get your tame started early instead of trading damage with him.

Magria

Spirit BeastBM ONLYMount Hyjal

27.4, 51.4 / 29, 52.4 / 31.2, 51.2 / 33, 52.4 / 35.2, 54.6 / 37.2, 54 / 40.6, 53.2

Blue spectral saber, one of the pair that runs the road through the Regrowth.

The full route

You have to have phased The Inferno into The Regrowth by finishing the quest Aessina's Miracle before she exists for you at all. Petopia's advice on the tame is blunt: she runs very fast, and you should remove your armor to survive the tame.

The trick

The two Hyjal cats share a spawn, so only one is ever up, and both require the Mount Hyjal quest chain completed through Aessina's Miracle before you can see them at all - that is a phase, not stealth.

How the fight goes

The reported taming trick is the inverse of every other fight in this list: their Spirit Claw ability scales upward with your armour, so hunters strip every piece of gear before starting the channel. That last part comes from a player report rather than a guide body, so test with a spare set of greens rather than your raid gear. The Aessina's Miracle prerequisite is the well-established half, and the more common reason people never find them. Shared spawn means checking both locations is wasted effort.

The phase requirement is the wall.

What else goes wrong

A hunter who skipped Hyjal's questline will fly the road for hours and see nothing, because the zone they are standing in is the wrong version of the zone. Do the quest first, then hunt.

Ankha

Spirit BeastBM ONLYMount Hyjal

27.4, 51.2 / 29.6, 52 / 32.4, 51.4 / 34.4, 53.4 / 36, 53.8 / 38, 54.2 / 41.2, 54

Magria's pale twin, walking the same Regrowth road, gated behind the same Aessina's Miracle phase. Petopia again says to remove your armor to survive the tame.

The Aessina's Miracle prerequisite is the well-established half, and the more common reason people never find them. Shared spawn means checking both locations is wasted effort.

Ankha and Magria share a patrol, so the one you find is a coin flip. If you want both looks you are running this camp twice, and finding the wrong sister still burns the spawn.

Ban'thalos

Spirit BeastBM ONLYMount Hyjal (Sanctuary of Malorne)

25.8, 61.2 / 26, 65.2 / 27, 63.4 / 27.6, 60.2

An owl spirit beast that flies so far above the Sanctuary of Malorne you cannot reach him from the ground.

The full route

The tame is a controlled fall. Aggro him while flying, then survive the drop: Disengage as you fall to break fall damage, or Slow Fall, or Rocket Jump if you are a goblin. Aspect of the Turtle covers the Harsh Moonlight cast on the way down. Land, then start the channel. Spawn rate runs somewhere between 6 and 17 hours.

The whole difficulty is aggroing him at altitude and then surviving both the fall and his Harsh Moonlight while you drop.

What else goes wrong

Warcraft Wiki lists the standard answers: Disengage, an engineer's Flexweave Underlay, a goblin's Rocket Jump, or a Colossal Parachute from the Feralas vendor, which self-destructs twenty minutes after purchase. The lazy version is standing on the tallest tree near the shrine and waiting for him to come to you.

Bulvinkel

Spirit BeastBM ONLYStormheim

73.4, 84

The spirit elderhorn, and yes, the name is a Bullwinkle joke.

The full route

He lives on the cliffs southeast of the Halls of Valor. Petopia's route: from the Halls of Valor entrance, jump to the grassy cliff area to the west, climb up and around the back, then drop to the lower cliff shelves.

One spawn point on terrain that does not want you standing on it. Most people who report Bulvinkel missing are simply on the wrong ledge.

Lightning Paw

Spirit BeastBM ONLYDuskwood

16, 60.2 / 16.4, 54 / 23.4, 76.6 / 24.2, 40.6 / 30, 40.8

The only spirit beast fox, with a unique lightning effect, and one of the hardest tames in the game for a stupid reason: he is stealthed and he has multiple random spawn points.

The full route

In each location a pair of creepy eyes shows in a nearby bush. Flare reveals him, Track Hidden widens your odds of noticing anything at all, and the macro /tar Lightning Paw will lock him if he is anywhere near you. Spawn timer runs roughly 2 to 12 hours and the spawn point is random each time.

People search for a fox model and never see one, because you are not looking for a fox, you are looking for eyes in a bush.

What else goes wrong

Build the /tar macro and spam it as you move between bushes rather than trusting your eyes. Do the full circuit repeatedly instead of parking at one bush - the spawn point rerolls, so camping a single location can burn a whole evening on a bush that was never going to have him.

Myonix

Spirit BeastBM ONLYSuramar

40.4, 33.4

The Manasaber Matron, on a narrow strip of land north of Anora Hollow and slightly east of Moonwhisper Gulch. Single point, easy to sweep on a flying mount.

She shares the Indigo Mana Saber look with Pashya, so for pure look collecting you only need whichever one shows up first. If you want the title and the retained name, it has to be Myonix.

Pashya

Spirit BeastBM ONLYCrimson Thicket, Suramar

60.2, 40.8 / 62, 46.8 / 62.4, 52.2 / 64.2, 47.4 / 66.2, 53.4

South of Nighteyes, at the base of the tree below the rocks. Petopia flags the important part: she is stealthed and cannot be detected until you are a few feet away.

Same stealth problem as Lightning Paw, in a zone people rarely idle in. Get off the mount and walk the rocks.

Gara

Spirit BeastBM ONLYBurial Fields, Shadowmoon Valley (Draenor)

59, 38.2

The longest single-tame questline in the game, and it spans all of Draenor.

The full route

Go to the Burial Fields in Shadowmoon Valley; at the southern end a spirit wolf named Gara sits at a grave. Scratching her ears starts the chain. She asks for Shadowberries, which drop from Mother Om'ra, a rare at the northern end of the same field. Return and speak to her. Next you assemble a Spirit Effigy from six pieces scattered across the continent: Crude Effigy from Drywind Bonepickers in Gorgrond, Torn Cloth from Necrophytes in Frostfire Ridge, Ancient Bone from Thunderlord Giantslayers at Grom'gar in Frostfire Ridge, Small Fruit from Warsong Marauders in Nagrand, Elder Incense from Sethekk Prophets in Spires of Arak, and a Wooden Bowl from Gorebound Legionnaires in Talador. Place it at Mother Om'ra's grave. Then farm Shadowmoon Voidtwisters at the Pillars of Fate for a Void Lantern, which only drops once the earlier steps are done, and use it to phase into the void realm. Go to the Great Tree Valuundira, find the hole around the trunk, take the Shadowmoon Voidblade from the tree by Elodor, and grind Elder Voidcallers and Elder Void Lords until Xan appears. As Xan dies he casts Consuming Void on Gara, and taming her is the only way to save her.

Approaching her in the wrong spec is the first wall people report, and it silently does nothing, so hunters assume she is bugged.

What else goes wrong

Treat that as folklore worth respecting rather than a documented rule: no live page states a spec gate on the opening interaction, only that Beast Mastery is required to finish the tame, which is true of every spirit beast. The Void Lantern is the second wall - it will not drop from the Voidtwisters until every prior step is complete, so farming it early is wasted time. Its tooltip carries no duration at all, so do not plan around the 60-minute clock the community repeats; that number appears on no source. One efficiency note from the veterans: kill Mother Om'ra and pocket spare Shadowberries on the way past.

Hati

Spirit BeastBM ONLYTemple of Storms, The Storm Peaks (with a stop in Ulduar)

33.4, 58.4 (Temple of Storms) / 43.4, 39.6 (Spark of the Imagination, Ulduar)

Thorim's wolf, lost when Titanstrike was drained, recovered through the patch 8.1.5 chain.

The full route

Start at the Image of Mimiron: Alliance find him at Tradewinds Market in Boralus outside the Snug Harbor Inn, Horde in the Grand Bazaar in Dazar'alor on the upper western terrace, across the main staircase from the flight point. Spark of Genius leads to the Inventor's Library in the Storm Peaks south of Ulduar. Telemetry Online has you fending off vrykul, proto-drakes and silithids while Mimiron triangulates. The Huntsman's Creed sends you to the Temple of Storms, where you fight the first essence down to 21 percent and absorb it. Paid in Blood sends you to Silithus north of the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj for the second essence, same 21 percent threshold but with chasing lightning orbs that root you. Spark of Imagination sends you to Ulduar - take the portal outside the entrance, do NOT enter the raid instance. Place the Thunderspark on the console during Bonds of Thunder and Hati is yours automatically at the end of the cinematic. Then Homeward Bound and Reverberation teach you to reuse the Thunderspark, which stays in the Temple of Storms permanently, to summon and tame the other five shades: Titanstrike silver-blue, Eaglewatch black, Elekk's Thunder dark grey, Boarshot Cannon brown, Serpentbite dark blue, and Hati's Sacrifice grey.

You need a free pet slot before Bonds of Thunder or the chain stalls at the finish line.

What else goes wrong

There is a stable master, the YZ-85 Biorearrangement Unit, standing to Mimiron's left inside the Spark of Imagination, so an active pet is easy to park - but if your stable slots are also full you have to abandon a pet outright, and you will be doing it standing in Ulduar with the cinematic queued. Sort your slots before you start. The other classic mistake is walking into the Ulduar raid instance instead of the portal outside it. The chain can be started in any spec but Hati is a spirit beast, so only Beast Mastery can actually use him. And he retains his name when tamed, though you can rename him.

Aradan

Spirit BeastBM ONLYThe Rookery Landing, The Rookery (dungeon)

Void-Scarred Stormhammer at 29.06, 36.21 underwater off the Isle of Dorn; Aradan flies over the Rookery Landing

The Mourning Stormrook, and the only tameable stormrook look in the game.

The full route

Before you set foot in the dungeon, go swimming: the Void-Scarred Stormhammer lies on the sea floor off the west coast of the Isle of Dorn at 29.06, 36.21, near a stand of brown and green kelp, a little west of the W in Storm's Watch on the zone map. It does not glow and it hides between rocks. With the hammer in your bags, run the Rookery on any difficulty including follower mode, kill Kyrioss, drop down the shaft, head south and east past Stormrider Vokmar and up the eastern stairs to the exterior landing. Aradan is circling to the north. Target him, click the hammer, and he lands and becomes tameable. Followers will not interfere with the tame.

Two of them.

What else goes wrong

Without the hammer he cannot be tamed or even attacked, so a first run without it is a wasted lockout of your evening. And he rolls one of five appearances, all blue with subtly different beaks, crowns, brows, cheeks and tails, so getting the exact one you want means repeat runs. Credit for working this out goes to waiting4paul of the Secret Finders Discord.

Bloodgullet

Spirit BeastBM ONLYOhn'ahran Plains

Essence of Awakening at 85.7, 20.8; Bloodgullet around 64.4, 44 to 67.2, 44.2 (roughly 66.0, 43.0)

A Spectral Blue Armoredon, and invisible to you until you buy your way in.

The full route

Click the Essence of Awakening, a pile of purple dust inside a hut at roughly 85.7, 20.8 in the Ohn'ahran Plains, between the S and the T in TIMBERSTEP on the zone map. That gives you an hour-long buff. With the buff up, he wanders the meadows southeast of the Maruukai flight point, north of the river.

The buff runs an hour and he wanders, so a slow lap can time out before you find him. People report Bloodgullet as bugged or missing constantly, and almost always the answer is that they never clicked the dust.

Nah'qi

Spirit BeastBM ONLYAmirdrassil, The Emerald Dream

45, 65.8 / 47.2, 58.8 / 49.4, 57.4 / 51.6, 56.8 / 53.2, 73.4 / 55, 65.2 (a counterclockwise loop around the tree)

The Ember of Regrowth, a fiery spirit somnowl that flies a counterclockwise loop around Amirdrassil just under the canopy.

The full route

Taming her needs a skill taught by the Cinder of Companionship, which is awarded when you learn Reins of Anu'relos, Flame's Guidance. Using the Cinder is an account-wide unlock, so it does not have to happen on your hunter.

That mount is a rare drop from Mythic Fyrakk in Amirdrassil.

What else goes wrong

This is a raid-lottery tame wearing an owl costume. She is also not flagged as a rare, so there is no marker on your map to tell you she is up: you fly the canopy and look.

Sul'raka

Spirit BeastBM ONLYThe Emerald Dream

57.6, 53.4 / 58.4, 58.2 / 59, 67.2 / 62, 54.2 / 63.2, 57.6 / 64.4, 67.2 / 65.6, 61 (55 recorded points across this area)

Daughter of Kimbul, the only Loa Tiger look.

The full route

This is a tracking tame rather than a camp: she is stealthed and cannot be seen or tamed without a flare landing near her, but she leaves footprints that persist for a short while. You find the prints, follow them, and flare where they run out.

Petopia openly says they are still trying to work out her path, which tells you how much of this is guesswork.

What else goes wrong

Fifty-five recorded sighting points is a polite way of saying she goes wherever she likes. Bring a stack of flares and patience.

Gon

Spirit BeastBM ONLYValley of Spirits, Orgrimmar

35.4, 69.2

The Horde counterpart to the Lost Spectral Gryphon.

The full route

Head down into the Valley of Spirits in Orgrimmar; next to the warlock trainer's hut there is a blue glowing egg beside a pile of skulls. Destroy the egg and Gon spawns as a neutral NPC you can tame. Respawn on the egg runs 30 minutes to 3 hours.

The mirror problem: Horde walk up, Alliance have to invade or sneak.

What else goes wrong

And because the egg is destroyed rather than clicked, a passing player who has no idea what it is can pop it and burn the timer for you without ever seeing Gon spawn. Spirit beast, so Beast Mastery only.

Lost Spectral Gryphon

Spirit BeastBM ONLYStormwind City

62.8, 72.4 / 67.8, 72.6 / 71.4, 72

A spirit beast that lives in the middle of Stormwind.

The full route

Near the flight master, beside the gryphon mount vendor, there is a Spectral Feather on the ground - bright blue and white with a faint glow. Click the feather and the Lost Spectral Gryphon spawns as a neutral NPC ready to tame. The feather respawns somewhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours.

Alliance hunters just walk up.

What else goes wrong

Horde hunters have to get to the Stormwind flight master alive, which means either an invasion or a very quiet sneak past guards and players, and the tame channel is six seconds of standing still in the middle of an enemy capital. Being a spirit beast, it is Beast Mastery only, so make sure you are in spec before you make the trip - respeccing in the middle of Stormwind is not the moment you want.

Elegon

Spirit BeastBM ONLYMogu'shan Vaults (raid)

20.6, 51.5

The Astral Cloud Serpent, a titan construct, and the only creature in the game with the Astral Serpent look.

The full route

Petopia lists him as tameable and he is categorised on Warcraft Wiki as a tamable spirit beast. He is the fourth encounter in Mogu'shan Vaults.

He is an elite raid boss, and the general taming rule is that hunters can only tame elite NPCs at or below their own level, unlike regular NPCs where two levels above is fine. The exact in-encounter method and timing is not something I could confirm on a live page this session, so treat the window itself as unverified and read up before you burn a lockout.

Gumi

Spirit BeastBM ONLYKun-Lai Summit

54.2, 57.6

Blue spectral porcupine, one of three Pandaria elites that use the same taming puzzle. Gumi must be brought to 30 percent health before the tame will start.

The trick

The spectral porcupines are the friendliest spirit beasts in the game to actually get hold of - the respawn timer is around 10 to 15 minutes, which is nothing next to Arcturis at 12 hours.

How the fight goes

The mechanic is a damage threshold rather than a puzzle: bring one below 30 percent health and it becomes tameable. Degu is the red one, with Gumi and Hutia as the blue and green recolours, all tamed the same way. Same problem as Chimaeron, worse. These are small Pandaria-era mobs and a current-gear hunter will vaporise one before the health bar has finished animating. Take gear off, all of it if you have to, and use your slowest possible ability. The 10 to 15 minute respawn is forgiving of one mistake, which is exactly why people get sloppy and burn four of them in an hour.

At modern gear levels you will delete him by accident.

What else goes wrong

Petopia's method is deliberately absurd and it works: strip off every piece of gear, kill yourself, take the resurrection sickness, then punch him down by hand until the bar hits 30 percent. If you are genuinely low level the problem inverts and he hits hard enough that you need to kite; he runs fast, so Concussive Shot and a movement cooldown help.

Hutia

Spirit BeastBM ONLYThe Jade Forest

48.2, 27.8 / 49.2, 29.6 / 49.3, 25.8 / 51.2, 26.6

Green spectral porcupine, same 30 percent health gate as Gumi and Degu, same strip-and-punch answer at max level.

Take gear off, all of it if you have to, and use your slowest possible ability. The 10 to 15 minute respawn is forgiving of one mistake, which is exactly why people get sloppy and burn four of them in an hour.

Hutia adds a wrinkle the other two do not have: a periodic heal that you can interrupt. If your only interrupt does damage, you may simply have to eat the heals and keep punching, which turns a two minute job into a long one.

Degu

Spirit BeastBM ONLYValley of the Four Winds

41.4, 78 / 45.2, 76.8 / 50, 77.8 / 53.6, 77.4 / 57.2, 77 / 59.2, 77

Red spectral porcupine.

The full route

Degu patrols the cliff edge along the southern border of the valley, from a point southeast of Stormstout Brewery east to just above Thunder Cleft. Same 30 percent health requirement.

He patrols a long cliff line, so unlike the other two you have to find him before you can start the strip-and-punch routine. He also runs quickly, which matters more here because there is a cliff to lose him over.

Challenge tame

20

The ones where the tame is a fight. A health threshold, a fall, an interrupt on a cast that would otherwise delete you. Read the mechanic before you pull.

Mana Saber

Spirit BeastBM ONLYMoon Guard Stronghold, Suramar

27.8, 11.2 / 31.6, 16.2 / 33.4, 10 / 35, 11.4 / 35.2, 18.8 / 38.8, 14 / 40.2, 16.4

Not a rare at all.

The full route

This is ordinary Suramar wildlife that happens to be a spirit beast, carrying the Purple Mana Saber look. Twelve or more spawn points around Moon Guard Stronghold. Walk in, tame, walk out.

There is no catch, which is exactly why it belongs on the list.

What else goes wrong

Newer Beast Masters spend weeks camping Loque'nahak without realising a spirit beast is standing in Suramar on a two minute respawn. It will not keep a special name.

Leyline Prowler

Spirit BeastBM ONLYLeystation Moonfall, Suramar

35, 20.2 / 35.8, 24.2 / 37, 17 / 37, 18.8

The Blue Mana Saber look on regular trash. Thicket Manahunter in the Crimson Thicket carries the same look if Leystation Moonfall is picked clean.

Nothing hard here either. Worth naming only so you do not waste a spirit beast slot in your stable on a duplicate look you could refarm in five minutes.

Thicket Manahunter

Spirit BeastBM ONLYCrimson Thicket, Suramar

58.8, 42 / 59.4, 45.4 / 60.4, 43 / 61, 46.4 / 61.8, 49 / 62.2, 43.2

Second source for the Blue Mana Saber look, sixteen recorded spawn points through the Crimson Thicket. Same trip as Pashya, so tame one of these while you wait on her.

None worth the word. Note that Pashya patrols the same ground, so read the nameplate before you fire off a tame.

Lost Netherwolf

Spirit BeastBM ONLYShadowmoon Valley (Draenor)

64.6, 37

The shortcut to the Shadowy Draenor Wolf look.

The full route

No chain, no void realm, no Xan. It is standing in Shadowmoon Valley waiting to be tamed.

You get the model and none of the story. It does not retain a name, so anyone inspecting your pet sees a wolf you called something, not Gara.

16 more challenge tames

Deth'tilac

SpiderMolten Front

68, 71.4 / 68.8, 71.2 / 69.4, 69.8 / 73, 58 / 73.2, 59.4

The best-designed tame Blizzard ever shipped, and it still works exactly as it did in patch 4.2. Molten Will makes Deth'tilac immune to taming until low on health, and Deth Strike instantly kills whatever it lands on - it cannot be dodged, blocked, or parried.

The full route

The trick is that every Deth Strike costs Deth'tilac 10 percent of its maximum health, a fixed chunk, so ten of them strip the bar. Engage, send your pet in as a sacrifice, let Deth Strike eat it, resurrect the pet, feed it in again. Keep Tar Trap and Concussive Shot rolling to hold range while you cycle. Once the health bar is low, dismiss and tame. The recolours Kirix, Solix, Skitterflame, and Anthriss are the same era of challenge tame.

Stealing aggro from your own pet is the classic death.

What else goes wrong

If Deth Strike targets you instead of the pet, the fight is over. Keep your damage off and let the pet hold threat - this is one of the rare fights where doing less is doing it right. The second mistake is forgetting you have to dismiss the pet before you can channel Tame Beast, which means the last Deth Strike has to land while you still have a pet up. One thing no source will settle for you: neither Warcraft Wiki nor Petopia publishes a numeric threshold for Molten Will. Both say only 'low health'. The 20 percent figure repeated across the web is unsourced, so watch the bar rather than a number.

Skarr

CatFireplume Peak, Molten Front

33, 52.2 / 33.6, 52.6 / 36.8, 34.8

A fire cat on Fireplume Peak, and Petopia notes he can appear on a floating rock off the east side of the peak rather than on the peak itself. Same Molten Front unlock as Deth'tilac.

The trick

Skarr and Karkin are one encounter wearing two models.

How the fight goes

They share spawn points, share a timer of roughly 4 to 10 hours, and only one is ever up. Both punish a naive pull with the same ability, Fieroclast Barrage, which is triggered by the Tame Beast attempt itself and stuns for 1 second to break the channel. So open with Tame Beast deliberately, bait the Barrage on your terms, interrupt it, pop Aspect of the Turtle for whatever lands, then recast and finish. The documented shortcut is shared too: ride the thermals off the floating rocks for a 2-minute haste buff and the channel outruns the stun. Ignore any guide that tells you to bring Silencing Shot - that ability no longer exists. Petopia lists no trick for either one, which suggests the fight is largely trivial at a current level cap.

The floating rock is the trap.

What else goes wrong

Hunters sweep the peak, see nothing, and log off without ever looking out over the edge. Petopia also flags the level rule that saves you here: even though he shows two levels above you, you can tame him as long as you are at least his minimum level.

Karkin

CrabFireplume Peak, Molten Front

33, 52.2 / 33.4, 53 / 36.8, 34.8 / 37.6, 35.4

The fire crab, sharing Fireplume Peak with Skarr. He can appear on a floating rock off either the east or the southeast side of the peak.

The trick

Both are unique metallic skins on a shared respawn timer of roughly 4 to 10 hours, and Karkin is one of the rarest crab looks in the game.

How the fight goes

The sequence matters: pull with Tame Beast, which forces the Fieroclast Barrage cast. Interrupt it with Counter Shot. Pop Aspect of the Turtle to eat whatever damage does land. Then recast Tame Beast and finish the channel. Depending on which of the two spawn points is live you may need to jump across some platforms to reach them. Skarr's Mists of Pandaria recolour is the Jade Guardian. Pulling with an attack rather than with Tame Beast is the error - the point of opening with the tame channel is that it baits the Barrage on your terms rather than mid-channel later. At max level Fieroclast Barrage will not kill you through Turtle, but at lower levels it absolutely will, and a lot of the guides that describe this fight were written when it was current content and lethal. They share a respawn, so if one is up the other is not.

Two possible rocks instead of one, and the same Molten Front gate. Because he and Skarr overlap on the peak points, a sighting report of one is a decent sign the other's window is near.

Terrorpene

TurtleMount Hyjal (Throne of Flame)

51.8, 72.2 / 52.8, 73.2 / 53, 74.6 / 53.8, 82 / 54, 78

The molten turtle at the Throne of Flame, eleven recorded points across the southeast corner of Hyjal.

He is immune to traps. Every hunter reflex that starts a hard tame with Freezing Trap simply does nothing here, and you find that out with a very angry turtle already on top of you.

Bombyx

WormBM ONLYKrasarang River, Krasarang Wilds

29, 46 / 29.6, 47.2 / 30.8, 39.8 / 31, 43.6

A rare elite worm patrolling a small stretch of the Krasarang River.

The full route

Worms are exotic, so Beast Mastery only. Petopia classes this as a special tracking tame rather than a straightforward camp.

A tracking tame means you are following signs to a creature rather than waiting at a marker. Eighteen recorded points along a short river section says the patrol is real and the window is short.

Glimmer

Water StriderBM ONLYThe Jade Forest

38.2, 73 / 39.6, 67 / 45.6, 72.8 / 52.6, 42.8 / 53, 51.2

Rare elite water strider with a unique look.

The full route

Water Striders are exotic. Thirteen recorded points spread across a lot of Jade Forest coastline.

The points are far enough apart that this is a genuine zone lap, not a camp. Pair the route with Hutia, who is in the same zone and needs the strip-and-punch treatment anyway.

Hexapos

Water StriderBM ONLYDread Wastes

30, 53.8 / 32.4, 51 / 32.6, 23.4 / 33.8, 24.6 (57 recorded points)

The second exotic water strider. Petopia calls Hexapos a special tracking tame, and fifty-seven recorded sighting points backs that up.

Fifty-seven points is not a spawn table, it is a wander log.

What else goes wrong

Do not treat any single coordinate as the answer here. Track rather than camp.

King Krush

DevilsaurBM ONLYSholazar Basin

26, 48 / 30, 44 / 30.2, 39.4 (39 recorded points across the basin)

The devilsaur that ate half of Wrath's levelling population.

The full route

Thirty-nine wander points across Sholazar Basin. Devilsaurs are exotic, so Beast Mastery only.

He is on the Northern Exposure criteria list, exactly like Loque'nahak, so achievement hunters shoot him the second he appears. Camping the basin for both at once is efficient, and it is also the reason both are hard: you are sharing a zone with people whose goal is a dead rare.

Aotona

Bird of PreySholazar Basin

40.4, 59.6 / 41.2, 68.4 / 42, 73.8 (25 recorded points)

The bright parrot of Sholazar Basin, twenty-five wander points, unique bird of prey look. Non-exotic, so any hunter can take her.

Another Northern Exposure name in the same basin as Loque'nahak and King Krush. Three contested rares in one zone is why Sholazar remains the single most camped piece of Northrend two expansions later.

Ghost Saber

CatRuins of Mathystra, Darkshore

58.8, 19 / 59.2, 17 / 60, 22.4 / 60.8, 12.2 / 62.2, 14 / 63, 18.8

Not a spirit beast, not exotic, and older than most of this list.

The full route

You summon it by clicking Cat Figurines scattered around the Ruins of Mathystra until one produces a Ghost Saber. Twenty-one recorded figurine points.

There is no rare to camp, only clickables to grind, and each figurine is a roll rather than a guarantee. The payoff is that it stays ghostly after taming, which is why a level 5 Darkshore mob is still in collectors' stables in Midnight.

Harandar spawned florafaun

Carrion Bird, Direhorn, Hydra, Ray, SporebatHarandar

Beyond the wild florafaun, Harandar carries a set of spawned tames - creatures that are not standing in the world waiting for you but have to be triggered into existing.

The full route

Petopia's Spawned Pets list confirms Perturbed Petalwing (npc 248070, levels 82 to 90) at the Blooming Lattice, Grumpy Chloroceros in Dreth'amar Cavern across several colours, Rootbound Horror as a spawned hydra across the zone, Agitated Rootbat in Dreth'amar Cavern, and Binli, the Glow Guard sporebat in the non-instanced version of the Grudge Pit. All of them still need the florafaun skill where the model is florafaun.

Petopia's standing warning on spawned pets applies here: some spawned pets keel over dead shortly after you tame them, and it only happens once, so re-summon and re-tame rather than assuming the pet is bugged out of your stable.

What else goes wrong

The other trap is the Grudge Pit - Binli sits in the non-instanced version of that area, so if you zone into the instance you will never see her. The exact trigger for several of these Harandar spawns is not documented on any page I could verify, so treat any forum claim about a precise summon item with suspicion until you have seen it yourself.

Deathcoil Skyfiend

ChimaeraBM ONLYThe Skybridge, Zul'Aman

Skyfiend Chimaeras are one of the flagship new looks of patch 12.1, something between a wind serpent and a snake-headed chimaera, and the tameable palette runs Green, Crimson, Purple, Pale Pink, and Orange.

The full route

The Deathcoil Skyfiend at the Skybridge in Zul'Aman is a level 90 spawned version listed across multiple colours, which is unusual - most spawned tames come in one look. Chimaeras are exotic, so Beast Mastery only.

Beast Mastery or nothing, and that catches Survival players every patch when a beautiful new model turns out to be exotic.

What else goes wrong

Petopia also documents a large block of unused combination looks for this model, dozens of body-and-feather pairings that exist in the files and not in the world, so the five tameable colours are the whole menu no matter what a screenshot on a forum suggests. The precise spawn trigger at the Skybridge is not documented on the sources I could verify.

Chimaeron

ChimaeraBM ONLYBlackwing Descent

A Cataclysm raid boss made tameable in patch 6.0, with some of the strangest animations on any pet in the game.

The full route

There is no puzzle here beyond a health gate: he is only tameable below 20 percent. Walk in, chip him down, and start the channel when the bar drops under the line.

At Midnight item levels the danger is not dying, it is overkilling.

What else goes wrong

Twenty percent of a Cataclysm boss is a rounding error against a current-gear autoshot, and people obliterate him from 40 percent in a single global. Strip gear until your damage is slow enough to stop on a dime, and turn off any pet or trinket that can fire on its own. Hydras are exotic, so Beast Mastery only. He is on a raid lockout, so a mistake costs you a week.

Plague Toad

HopperTemple of Sethraliss

The only giant toad currently tameable, and the tame happens inside a boss fight.

The full route

Run Temple of Sethraliss on Normal, Heroic, or Mythic. During the final boss encounter, Plague Toads spawn as part of the mechanics. Dismiss your pet and tame one mid-encounter.

The toads vanish the instant they touch any player, leaving a debuff behind.

What else goes wrong

So the actual skill is positioning: get well away from your group, pick a toad that nothing else is walking toward, and give yourself the whole six-second channel clear of traffic. Running this with a random group is asking to have your target popped by someone soaking mechanics. Solo it if you can, or bring people you can tell to stand still.

Felbound Wolf

WolfTanaan Jungle

A common wolf with a fel colouring that exists on no other wolf, and it needs an item applied before the tame will take.

The full route

Head to southern Tanaan Jungle, find and kill Fel Rangari Anaara, and loot the Vial of Fel Cleansing from her. Then fly around Tanaan looking for Felbound Wolves and use the vial on one. The cleanse is what makes the wolf tameable. Tame it after the vial lands.

The vial will not work on a sleeping wolf, and Tanaan is full of sleeping wolves, so people conclude the item is broken.

What else goes wrong

Find an awake one. Older guide text calls Anaara 'him'; she is female, which matters only if you are searching a comment thread for confirmation and getting confused by pronouns.

Lowland Manashell

TurtleSuramar

The Lowland Manashell is a tameable version of Tortos from Throne of Thunder, which is reason enough to want one.

The full route

It is not standing there waiting. Whenever a regular Lowland Hardshell in that area of Suramar dies, there is a chance a Lowland Manashell spawns in its place. So the routine is turtle clearing: kill Hardshells until a Manashell appears, then tame it.

People show up expecting a rare spawn on a timer and fly circuits looking for a mob that is not there.

What else goes wrong

It is a kill-to-proc, and the proc is on the ordinary turtles you would normally ignore. It does not take terribly long, but you have to actually be killing things rather than searching.

Quest or item gated

5

You can stand on top of these and get nothing. A chain, a tome, or a boss kill has to happen first.

Bane of the Vilebloods

Blood BeastDen of Predaxus, Voidstorm

47, 80.4 / 47.2, 83.4

A level 80 to 90 rare in the Den of Predaxus in Voidstorm, and the only blood beast in the Midnight zones that Petopia files under Unique Rare Pets, meaning its look exists on exactly one NPC in the world. He is also a criterion for The Ultimate Predator, the Voidstorm rare-clear achievement, so he is on plenty of routes that are not hunter routes.

You need the Blood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers from Uldir before you touch him, and there is nothing in the tooltip or the zone that tells you so.

What else goes wrong

A hunter who has never set foot in a Battle for Azeroth raid will find a current-content Voidstorm rare that flatly refuses to be tamed. Sort the tome out first, then camp him. Because he doubles as achievement bait, expect groups to burn him down while you are still opening your Tame Beast cast.

Alash'anir

ChimaeraBM ONLYDarkshore (Battle for Azeroth phase)

56.4, 30.8 / 56.6, 30.4 / 56.6, 30.8

Venom and Storm, a rare elite chimaera perched on a ridge in the eastern border mountains overlooking a waterfall, southwest of the Ruins of Mathystra. Chimaeras are exotic, so Beast Mastery only.

He only exists in the Battle for Azeroth war-campaign phase of Darkshore.

What else goes wrong

Standing in the classic version of the zone at the same coordinates gets you a nice view and nothing else. Phase first, camp second.

Chloroceros

DirehornHarandar

The plant-rhino of Harandar is the only Midnight tame sitting behind two separate taming skills at once.

The full route

You need Trials of the Florafaun Hunter, because a chloroceros is florafaun, and you need Ancient Tome of Dinomancy, because a chloroceros is filed under the Direhorn family. Miss either one and Tame Beast simply refuses. The Dinomancy tome is a rare drop from Zandalari Dinomancers on the Isle of Giants in Pandaria, which means a Midnight tame sends you back to a Mists of Pandaria farm. Petopia lists five tameable colours: Lavender, Purple, Red, Tan, and Teal-Purple. Zandalari troll hunters get the Dinomancy half free; haranir hunters get the florafaun half free.

Ancient Tome of Dinomancy is NOT account-wide.

What else goes wrong

Florafaun taming is. So the hunter who learned Dinomancy back in Battle for Azeroth still has it, but the fresh hunter you levelled for Midnight does not, and that is where people get stuck - they read the Harandar tablet, walk up to a chloroceros, and get a bare error message that names neither missing skill. Cast Beast Lore on the target before you assume the game is broken. If you are a Zandalari haranir, congratulations, you are the only combination in the game that walks up and presses the button.

Iron Juggernaut

MechanicalSiege of Orgrimmar

This one you build.

The full route

Kill the Iron Juggernaut in Siege of Orgrimmar for a Pile of Juggernaut Parts, kill Siegecrafter Blackfuse for Blackfuse's Power Core, then pick up a paint bucket for the colour you want. The buckets are scattered around the raid: green in the underground area on the way to General Nazgrim, blue directly under Malkorok's platform down the stairs, teal in the western quadrant where you fight the Spoils of Pandaria, grey in the passageway between the Paragons of the Klaxxi and Garrosh Hellscream. Right-click the bucket to create a Deactivated Juggernaut of that colour, click that to summon a neutral Juggernaut in front of you, and tame it.

One per week per hunter - the parts are on a weekly lockout, so a full set of four colours is a four-week commitment minimum.

What else goes wrong

The summon only works inside Siege of Orgrimmar, so do not carry the Deactivated Juggernaut out and wonder why the click does nothing. And the paint decides the pet colour permanently at the moment you right-click, not at the moment you tame, so grab the right bucket before you assemble. Mechanical rules apply: Matrix, or be a gnome, goblin, or mechagnome.

1 more gated tames

Fenryr

WolfHalls of Valor, Stormheim

You have to solo Halls of Valor on Mythic.

The full route

Not Heroic, not Normal, and not Mythic Plus - the specific Mythic difficulty, entered alone. Trash is skippable with Camouflage or Feign Death. Kill Hymdall, then take the right-hand corridor to Fenryr. Fight him at his first position; at 60 percent he breaks off and runs to the far cave. Follow him, engage again while he licks his wounds, use Primal Rage, keep Mend Pet rolling, and Misdirect the adds onto your pet. When he dies, a tameable non-hostile Fenryr spawns in the cave. Dismiss your pet and tame him.

'Solo' means genuinely solo - you cannot bring a friend in and have them stand outside the door.

What else goes wrong

In Legion this was brutal; at Midnight gear it is a stroll, which means the real risk now is queueing Mythic Plus by reflex and wondering why the tameable version never appears. The other thing people forget is that they need an empty pet slot and their current pet dismissed before the tameable Fenryr will accept the channel.

Rare spawn

23

Up or not up. Nothing gates them but the timer and whoever else is parked on the spawn point.

Rhazul

WhiptailBM ONLYHarandar

47.2, 50 / 51.2, 45.2 (just north of The Den)

Whiptails are the headline new exotic family of Midnight, and Rhazul is currently the only tameable grimlynx in the game.

The full route

He is a rare beast in Harandar at roughly 51.6, 45.2, npc 248741, added in patch 12.0.1, and he is also a criterion for the Leaf None Behind achievement. He hits with Feral Lunge and Lacerate. Beast Mastery only, level 10 and up, like every exotic. The other whiptail model, the Shredclaw, is widely tameable in four colours; the grimlynx look is Rhazul alone in Grey and White Striped.

The achievement is the problem.

What else goes wrong

Leaf None Behind wants him dead, and most of the people racing you to the spawn are not hunters and will happily flatten him in four seconds. Be in Beast Mastery before you arrive, not after you see him on the tracker - swapping spec inside the window is how people lose him. Petopia lists four more grimlynx looks (Black and Blue, Black and Red, Brown and Amber, Dark Blue Striped) as untameable, so do not go hunting for a coloured one. Grey and White Striped is what exists.

Bilemaw the Gluttonous

WhiptailBM ONLYThe Molt, Voidstorm

35.4, 50 / 47.2, 83.4

The Apex Predator, a Red-Grey Shredclaw rare in The Molt.

The full route

Beast Mastery only, since Whiptails are exotic. He retains his name after taming.

The Red-Grey Shredclaw look is not unique to him, so if you want the colour and nothing else, ordinary Voidstorm shredclaws will do. What you cannot get anywhere else is a pet whose nameplate reads Bilemaw the Gluttonous, which is the only reason to camp him.

Dame Bloodshed

CatEversong Woods

44.2, 37.4 / 44.6, 38.2 / 45.4, 38.6 / 45.6, 38.8 (south of North Sanctum)

The Lynx Matriarch, a level 80 to 90 rare south of North Sanctum in the Midnight version of Eversong Woods.

The full route

Six tight coordinate points, so this is a small camp rather than a zone sweep. Retains her name.

Eversong is heavily trafficked in Midnight and Cats are a non-exotic family, which means every hunter in the zone can take her, not just Beast Masters. Competition here is wide, not deep.

Destra

HydraThe Serpent's Tail, The Coiled Isle

51.7, 32.5 / 51.9, 32.3 / 52.2, 32.6

A level 90 hydra rare in the 12.1 zone, carrying a Serpent Hydra look no other rare has.

The full route

Three coordinates inside a few tenths of each other, so once you are there you are there. Keeps her name.

The Coiled Isle is the newest ground in the game right now, which means the camps are crowded and the respawn feels longer than it is. Non-exotic family, so the whole hunter population is eligible.

19 more rare spawns

Siltmouth

RodentGate of the Eastern Fang, The Coiled Isle

50, 68.4 / 50.2, 69.4 / 50.5, 69.3

The Unflappable, a level 90 rodent rare at the Gate of the Eastern Fang. Unique capybara-family look, retains its name.

Same Coiled Isle problem as Destra and Lockjaw: a fresh-patch zone full of people who will tag it for the loot without knowing or caring that a hunter wanted it alive.

Lockjaw

TurtleThe Fangs, The Coiled Isle

31.6, 56.8 / 31.8, 56.4

The Snapper, level 90, in The Fangs.

The full route

Two coordinates, both within a few yards. Smooth dragon turtle look that no other rare carries. Retains its name.

Two spawn points means a two-second sweep and a long wait. It is the purest form of camping on this list, and the only variable you control is whether you are the one standing there when it pops.

The Nightreaver

RayK'aresh

52, 56.4 / 52, 58.8 / 52.6, 55.8 / 52.6, 57.4 / 52.6, 58.6

A level 80 ray with a cosmic ray look that only it carries. Eight recorded points inside a small block of K'aresh, so it is a stand-and-wait rather than a patrol.

Rays fly, and K'aresh has vertical terrain, so the eight points are not all on the same plane. People walk under it more often than they miss it.

Tor'go

DevilsaurBM ONLYAncient Falls, The Ringing Deeps

54.2, 68.4 / 54.4, 69.6 / 58.2, 68.8 / 58.6, 69.6

Rare elite devilsaur at Ancient Falls, carrying a look no other rare has. Devilsaurs are exotic, so Beast Mastery only.

Rare elite at level 80 is a real fight, and devilsaur tames punish you for starting the cast with the mob still swinging. Bring the health to survive nine seconds of standing still.

Plaguehart

StagBoskroot Basin, Isle of Dorn

50.4, 70 / 50.8, 69.4 / 50.8, 69.8

Level 80 stag rare in Boskroot Basin with a unique stag look. Three points, all in the same clearing.

Isle of Dorn is a starting zone for the previous expansion, which means a constant drip of levelling players who kill rares reflexively.

Tephratennae

WaspCinderwold, Isle of Dorn

71.4, 38 / 71.6, 39.6 / 71.8, 37.4

Rare elite wasp in Cinderwold, unique wasp look, ten recorded points in a tight cluster.

Cinderwold is the storm wolf area, so the ground around the camp is thick with elites that will pull while you are setting up a tame.

Lytfang the Lost

CatHallowfall

23, 59

Level 80 cat rare with a unique look, and exactly one recorded spawn point in Hallowfall.

One point, non-exotic family, in a zone with heavy weekly event traffic. You are competing with the entire hunter population and with everyone farming Hallowfall for other reasons.

Grimewick

CrabBlackwater Marina, Undermine

65.4, 32.8 / 66.4, 31.4 / 67, 32.4 / 67.2, 33.6

Level 80 hermit crab rare around Blackwater Marina, twelve recorded points along the waterline.

Undermine's rare population is dense and people run routes through it, so Grimewick tends to die as part of somebody's loop rather than as a target.

Xishorr

SpiderPillar-nest Xesh, Azj-Kahet

67.4, 58.4 / 67.6, 58.6 / 67.8, 58.2 / 68.6, 57.8

Shadow of Xishirra, a level 80 spider rare inside Pillar-nest Xesh with a unique spider look. Four points inside the nest.

The nest itself is the problem. Getting to the spawn means clearing or dodging a lot of hostile spiders, and a failed tame usually means a failed escape too.

The Evalcharr

ChimaeraBM ONLYAzshara

13.8, 50.6 / 14.4, 50.4 / 14.4, 57.4 / 14.6, 57.6

An old-world chimaera rare in western Azshara, carrying a look no other rare has. Six recorded points in two small clusters.

Azshara is empty enough that nobody is going to tell you it is up. On the other hand nobody is going to kill it either, so this is a patient solo camp rather than a race.

Amaukwa

ChimaeraBM ONLYShadowmoon Valley (Draenor)

The Breath of Moon, a Draenor chimaera rare with a unique look.

The full route

Exotic family, Beast Mastery only. Same zone trip as Gara and Lost Netherwolf, so fold it into that route.

Draenor zones are largely abandoned, which cuts both ways. No competition, but also no crowd-sourced sighting reports to work from.

Tura'aka

ChimaeraBM ONLYNagrand (Draenor)

Draenor Nagrand chimaera rare, unique look, exotic family. Pair it with an Amaukwa lap since both are Draenor and both are dead zones.

As with Amaukwa, the difficulty is entirely in the respawn and in the fact that nobody is watching Draenor for you.

Osca the Bloodied

BearRoaring Highland, Stormsong Valley

41.4, 63 / 42, 63 / 42.6, 62.2 / 42.6, 62.8

A bear rare in the Roaring Highland with a bear look no other rare carries. Six points in one tight cluster.

Straightforward camp with no phase and no gate, which in practice means the only thing between you and the look is other people's routes through Stormsong.

Caverndark Terror

CrabChitterspine Grotto, Nazjatar

A rare elite crab in Chitterspine Grotto with a unique crab look. Petopia lists the location; the Wowhead tooltip data returned no map coordinates for this one, so go by the grotto rather than by numbers.

Nazjatar is underwater, vertical and hostile, and the grotto is not somewhere you wander into by accident. Budget time for the approach, not just the wait.

Underlight Queen

MothThe Crystal Fields, Zaralek Cavern

58, 69.2 / 58.4, 69.6

Rare elite moth in the Crystal Fields with a unique moth look. Two spawn points, close together.

Two points and rare elite health. The tame itself is more dangerous than the search, which is the reverse of most entries here.

Mosa Umbramane

FeathermaneMeandering Rootlands, The Emerald Dream

54.4, 37 / 54.8, 36.8

Level 80 feathermane rare in the Meandering Rootlands, unique look, two spawn points.

Feathermanes were locked behind a Legion unlock for years and people still assume they are.

What else goes wrong

They are not; this one is a plain rare camp. Fold it in with Sul'raka, Nah'qi, Ristar and Envoy of Winter, since all five share the Emerald Dream.

Ristar, the Rabid

RaptorViridescent Thicket, The Emerald Dream

44.4, 39.2 / 44.6, 39.2

Level 80 raptor rare in the Viridescent Thicket with a raptor look no other rare carries. Two points, effectively the same spot.

Nothing exotic, nothing gated, just a two-point camp in a zone where four other collector targets live. Run the Dream loop rather than sitting on one of them.

Envoy of Winter

StagShiversnap Grove, The Emerald Dream

34.8, 63.2 / 34.8, 63.6

A rare elite stag in Shiversnap Grove carrying a unique stag look. Two spawn points in the grove.

Rare elite at level 80 means the tame window is a real fight rather than a formality. Otherwise this is the easiest of the Emerald Dream five.

Portent

Stone HoundBM ONLYVale of Eternal Blossoms

Portent is a quilen that does not appear on anyone's map.

The full route

He belongs to a set of nine trackable pets from Mists of Pandaria that you find by following footprints. Fly the Vale fairly low until you spot tracks on the ground, follow them until they stop, then hover and wait a moment to see whether fresh tracks appear ahead of you. If they do, he is right there. Drop a Flare and he becomes visible, then tame. He spawns as blue, red, purple, or green, and the models are genuinely unique - no other quilen looks like him - so a full set means taming him four separate times. The other eight trackables are Glimmer, Savage, Patrannache, Bloodtooth, Stompy, Bristlespine, Rockhide the Immovable, and Hexapos.

The tracks are the whole mechanic and they are easy to fly straight over at normal mount speed and normal altitude.

What else goes wrong

Go slow and go low. Flare is not optional; standing next to him is not enough on its own reliably. And because Stone Hounds are exotic, a Survival hunter can follow every footprint in Pandaria and never take one home.

Seasonal

10

Tied to an event, a rotation, or a patch window. Get them while the window is open.

Barbtooth Bloodtracker

WhiptailBM ONLYMidnight Delves

34.4, 35.9 / 40.3, 35.3 / 41.5, 35.3 (20 recorded points)

A level 90 elite whiptail that spawns as part of a Nemesis group inside Midnight Delves. It rolls one of four appearances, covering all four Shredclaw colours from a single source.

Read this one as a warning, not a target.

What else goes wrong

Petopia is explicit that Barbtooth spawns as part of a Nemesis group only during the first season of Midnight Delves. Season 2 is live, so it has very probably stopped spawning, and every guide still listing it in the present tense will send you into delves for something that is not there. Left here because it is the only single source for all four Shredclaw colours and it is worth knowing what you missed - and worth checking, in case the gate was lifted.

Lord Aj'qirai

AqiriBM ONLYChamber of the Moon, Uldum

34.4, 18.4 / 34.6, 18.8

A rare elite aqiri in the Chamber of the Moon.

The full route

Aqiri are exotic, so Beast Mastery only. Petopia is precise about the gate: he appears during Aqir Unearthed assaults.

Uldum assaults rotate.

What else goes wrong

Show up on the wrong week and the Chamber of the Moon has no Lord Aj'qirai in it at any coordinate. Check which assault is active before you fly out.

Anh-De the Loyal

Stone HoundBM ONLYMistfall Village, Vale of Eternal Blossoms

33.4, 67.4 / 34.2, 68 / 34.4, 68.6 / 34.6, 68

The unique Stone Hound look, and Stone Hounds are exotic. He appears in Mistfall Village during Mogu assaults in the Vale.

Assault-gated like Lord Aj'qirai, on the Vale's rotation instead of Uldum's. Eight recorded points around the village, so once the right assault is up the actual finding is quick.

Rei Lun

Lesser DragonkinThe Hall of the Serpent, Vale of Eternal Blossoms

21.4, 12.4 / 21.4, 13.6 / 21.8, 12.8

The Chalcedony Construct, a rare elite in the Hall of the Serpent. It appears in the assaults phase of the Vale, specifically during Mogu assaults.

Same assault rotation as Anh-De, so one correct week can pay out both. Get the phase wrong and the Hall of the Serpent is just a building.

6 more seasonal looks

Dunegorger Kraulok

DevilsaurBM ONLYThe Bone Pit, Vol'dun

44, 55.4 / 44.4, 56.6 / 44.6, 55.4

A world boss you can tame, carrying a devilsaur look nothing else has. He is only present during the week in which he is the active Battle for Azeroth world boss, which comes around one week in every six.

A six-week rotation is the longest reliable wait on this entire list, and unlike a respawn timer you cannot shorten it by camping harder.

What else goes wrong

Note the week, set a reminder, and be there. Taming him also means getting the tame off during a world boss that a raid of strangers is busy deleting.

Armoured Void-Touched Hawkstrider

TallstriderEversong Woods

Patch 12.0.5 slipped this one in as the first tameable armoured hawkstrider, and it is a genuine event tame rather than a spawn camp.

The full route

It patrols during the 'Tranquil Repose' Void Strike, and Void Strikes only run while Void Assaults are set in Eversong Woods, which is every second week. Which Void Strike appears at any given location seems to cycle randomly, so the routine is: check that Eversong has the assault this week, then keep clearing Void Strikes until Tranquil Repose is the one that pops, then find the bird patrolling up and down the area and tame it.

The biweekly assault rotation is the real gate and it is invisible if you are not tracking it.

What else goes wrong

Turn up on a Zul'Aman assault week and the strike cannot spawn at all, no matter how many events you clear. Petopia also lists six more armoured hawkstrider colours (Black, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, White) that have never been found in the game, so the void-tinged one is the only look on the table - do not go looking for a red one. Because it is on a patrol path rather than parked, dismiss your pet and line up your cast before you pull aggro from the event mobs around it.

Void-Touched Snapdragon

LizardDaggerspine Point Ritual Site, Eversong Woods

This is the closest thing patch 12.0.5 has to a lure tame.

The full route

The Daggerspine Point Ritual Site is a small soloable instance in Eversong Woods, available every second week - look for the purple ritual site mark on the zone map. Inside, occasional piles of Washed Up Kelp sit around the floor. Interacting with a pile has a chance of spawning a Void-Touched Snapdragon, which can also drop the mount of the same name. Clear in, work the kelp, and be ready to tame the moment one appears.

Two things.

What else goes wrong

It is a chance on interact, not a guarantee, so people give up after one lap of the instance and conclude the pile is decorative. And the instance itself is on the same every-second-week cadence as the rest of the void content, so check the map for the purple mark before you fly out. Go in solo if you can; a mount farmer in your group will kill the snapdragon before your six-second channel lands.

Ice Blue Wiry Warp Stalker

Warp StalkerZul'Aman and Eversong Woods

The wiry warp stalker shows up during Void Assaults in Zul'Aman and Eversong Woods, but only where Hal'hadar ethereals are present.

The full route

Void Assaults alternate between the two zones weekly. In Zul'Aman the reliable source is the Void Incursion event that fires at Speaker's Rest once the zone's Void Assault tally hits 100 percent - the Hal'hadar Leystalkers there are stealthed, though a hunter detects them without effort. In Eversong, the 'Cryptic Operations' Void Strike in the crypts at the southern end of the Zeb'Nowa ruins (far south-east of the zone, south-west of the Zul'Aman entrance) also carries them.

Two corrections to the version of this that circulates.

What else goes wrong

It is not a void-touched look: the appearance was built for a warp stalker mount, the Cobalt Phase-Hunter, and patch 12.0.5 added it to the wild model. The name is simply Ice Blue. And the void rotation is not the only place to find one - Hal'hadar Leystalkers also stand at Nexus Port and Extraction Coast in Naigtal, outside the Zul'Aman and Eversong assault cycle entirely, which is a far calmer place to land a six-second channel. If you do go for the event version, budget several cleared events: these are event trash, the incursion raid deletes them on contact, and you get one window. Dismiss your pet, pre-target, and start the channel the instant you see one.

Sabertron

MechanicalStormsong Valley

35, 32.7

Mechanical tigers in five colours, sitting in a cave on the largest island off the coast of Stormsong Valley - cave entrance around 35, 32.7. All five sit inactive inside.

The full route

Killing the Sabertron Technician in the cave activates one as he dies, and that one is tameable with no further trick. With no Sabertron world quest running, the technician always activates the red one. While the world quest is up, he activates a random non-red colour, and that colour stays fixed for the whole time the quest is live that day. Killing all five also grants Sabertron Assemble.

Red is the only colour you can get on demand; the other four are world-quest-only, so a full set is a months-long project of catching the quest each time it appears.

What else goes wrong

You also need the Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix, or to be a gnome, goblin, or mechagnome, before any of this is worth doing. The real annoyance on the day is competition - the quest sends non-hunters into the same cave to kill the activated Sabertron, so tame fast or wait for the next technician.

Ivory Cloud Serpent

Lesser DragonkinVale of Eternal Blossoms

approximately 27, 55

The most elaborate lure tame on the books, and it needs four separate things lined up at once.

The full route

You need How to School Your Serpent learned unless you are pandaren. You need War Mode on. You need the toy N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth, which makes you hostile to normally-friendly Battle for Azeroth creatures. And you need a Mogu assault active in the Vale, which happens every second week for a few days; on Black Empire assault weeks it will not spawn at all. The serpent spawns roughly every 2 to 3 hours just south-west of the camp and bonfire at Winterbough Glade, around 27, 55. Do not use the toy yet. When it spawns it flies rapidly south-west and circles the Vale clockwise. Do not chase it - fly directly west to the top of the Gate of the Setting Sun, land on the ridge a few tiles north of the southern end, face south and wait. Drop a Freezing Trap along the ridge toward the south and a Tar Trap closer to the edge for reaction time. As it nears the Gate, and before it reaches the traps, activate N'lyeth. When it hits the Freezing Trap, tame.

Chasing it is the mistake that costs people the whole cycle - you cut it off at the Gate, you do not follow.

What else goes wrong

Firing the toy early is the other one; it has a one-hour cooldown and its effect is lost if you leave Battle for Azeroth areas, hearth, or take a portal, so hold it until the serpent is inbound. Be aware you are standing in War Mode in a contested zone for hours, and that mount farmers lassoing the same serpent will take it before your channel finishes. The hard truth as of now: N'lyeth itself is not currently obtainable, because one of the quests in its unlock chain has stopped working. If you already own the toy this is live content; if you do not, this tame is on hold.

Where the sources disagree, and which one won

Two live pages contradicting each other is the normal case, not the exception. These are the calls made while writing this, with the reasoning left in.

  • warcraft.wiki.gg's Exotic Beasts article lists only 12 families in its body text and omits Whiptail. Petopia's 12.1 exotic ability table, Petopia's Whiptail family page, the wiki's own Whiptail article, and the wiki's Hunter pet families navbox all list 13 including Whiptail. Treated as the Exotic Beasts article not yet updated for Midnight, but the discrepancy is real and worth rechecking.
  • Petopia's specs.php intro states 'Your pet's specialization cannot be changed', which directly contradicts Petopia's own abilities.php ('Since Patch 11.1 you can change your pet's spec at any Stable Master'), all 13 Petopia family pages, and warcraft.wiki.gg. Weighted toward changeable, but the stale line was not resolved by a primary source.
  • Har'koa is NOT tameable. She is the snow leopard loa of Zul'Drak and Loque'nahak's mate, but Petopia's Spirit Leopard look page states there is exactly one tameable creature with that look, and it is Loque'nahak. She appears nowhere in the Spirit Beast family's NPC tables. Listing her as a tame would be wrong.

Go in expecting these to have moved

Spawn data rots faster than anything else on this site. What follows could not be pinned to a live page, so it is a lead, not a location. Nothing below is stated as fact above.

  • Whether the classic Wrath and Cataclysm spirit beast rares still use fixed spawn points, and whether Ban'thalos spawns at all in the pre-Aessina's Miracle phase of Mount Hyjal. Modern phasing may not behave the way the 4.2-era write-ups assume.
  • Whether the Molten Front challenge tames still function as challenges at a current level cap. The wiki's prescribed counter for Skarr and Karkin is Silencing Shot, an ability removed from the game, and Petopia records no trick for either, which points at a fight that has been trivialised rather than one still worth preparing for.
  • Whether Trials of the Florafaun Hunter drops from Harandar rares generally or only from florafaun rares. Two of the five names circulating are not florafaun creatures, which suggests the pool is wider than the family, but no live drop table is published anywhere reachable.
  • Whether the florafaun skill retroactively gates the older Draenor mandragora tames (Festerbloom in Spires of Arak, Mandrakor in Gorgrond, the Everbloom mandragoras). Petopia attaches the requirement to 25 NPCs, which would mean previously tameable pets now need a Midnight tome.
25 more open questions
  • Petopia says Direhorns, Feathermanes, Lesser Dragonkin and Mechanicals can only be used in Beast Mastery. Warcraft Wiki marks none of the four as exotic and files them under skill families, which any specialization can use. Both cannot be right, and it changes which families are worth a non-BM hunter's time.
  • Warcraft Wiki contradicts itself on the Exotic Beasts level: the spell page says 10, the Hunter pet page says 65. The spell page agrees with its own patch-change log and with Petopia, so 10 is what is stated above, but nobody has adjudicated the wiki's two pages against each other.
  • Spawn timers, respawn windows, placeholder mechanics, and map coordinates for every rare named above. Petopia lists zone and subzone only. No live page fetched this session gave a single timer or coordinate, so none are stated anywhere in this file.
  • Relative pet DPS or throughput ranking of the 13 exotic families in 12.1 Season 2. No simulation, log aggregator, or class-guide source was fetched, so no family is claimed here to be better or worse on damage than another.
  • Exact numeric values for Froststorm Breath, Spirit Mend, Burrow Attack and Molten Hide. Petopia's tables show the raw spell coefficient strings rather than resolved numbers at level 90, and those strings were not converted here.
  • Whether Rhazul shares a spawn point or placeholder pool with other Harandar rares, and whether the other grimlynx colours become tameable later in Midnight.
  • Whether any 12.1 hotfix after the 2026-08-18 Season 2 launch changed exotic ability behaviour. Only Petopia's 12.1 look page was checked, not a hotfix feed.
  • Whether the classic Wrath and Cataclysm spirit beast rares (Loque'nahak, Skoll, Arcturis, Gondria) still use single fixed spawn points or have been moved to shared or rotating pools in modern patches.
  • Whether Devilsaptor taming requires anything beyond Trials of the Florafaun Hunter, and which specific florafaun rares in Harandar drop the tome. Petopia hedges with 'at least some'.
  • Elegon's in-encounter taming method and the exact health or phase window in Mogu'shan Vaults. Petopia lists him as tameable and Warcraft Wiki files him under tamable spirit beasts, but neither page I fetched this session describes how the tame is actually executed during the fight.
  • Sul'raka's patrol route in the Emerald Dream. Petopia states outright that they are still trying to work it out, so the 55 recorded sighting points are all anyone has.
  • Exact respawn timers for most entries. Only three are documented on the pages I read: Loque'nahak at six to ten hours, Skoll at eight to sixteen hours, and Arcturis on a variable timer measured from kill or tame that resets with server maintenance. Every other timer on this list is undocumented, and I have not invented one.
  • Caverndark Terror's coordinates. The Wowhead tooltip endpoint returned no map data for NPC 152464, so only the zone and subzone (Chitterspine Grotto, Nazjatar) are confirmed.
  • Coordinates for Amaukwa and Tura'aka. Petopia confirms both NPCs, their families and their zones, but I did not pull coordinate data for either this session.
  • Whether the Spirit Pango model added in Midnight ever becomes tameable. Petopia lists Spirit Pangos under Spirit Beasts as a currently untameable model, and the only NPC carrying it is Kulzi, Loa of Medicine, a boss at the Shrine of Kulzi in Zul'Aman at 38.8, 44.8, flagged untameable. There is no tameable source for it in 12.1.
  • Whether Ban'thalos requires any zone phase in Mount Hyjal. Ankha and Magria demonstrably do (the Aessina's Miracle phase), but neither Petopia nor Warcraft Wiki states a phase requirement for Ban'thalos, so I have not claimed one.
  • Waypoints for the five Harandar rares that drop Trials of the Florafaun Hunter. A Wowhead commenter posted Queen Lashtongue at 59.8, 46.6; Dracaena at 40.4, 43.4; Ha'kalawe at 68.0, 60.6 or 68.6, 60.0; Pterrock at 27.14, 70.15; Oro'ohna at 28.2, 82.0, all in Harandar (map 2413). These are player-submitted, not from an NPC page I could open, so verify in game before you build a route on them.
  • Whether Trials of the Florafaun Hunter drops from ALL Harandar rares or only from florafaun-type rares. Wowhead's drop table lists exactly five NPCs; commenters speculate the pool is wider. Treat the five as the confirmed set.
  • The exact drop rate of Trials of the Florafaun Hunter. The logged sample suggests roughly 2 to 4 percent per kill, but Wowhead's percentages are skewed by non-hunters looting or not looting, and a striking number of commenters report a first-kill drop. No official number exists.
  • The spawn trigger for Perturbed Petalwing at the Blooming Lattice, for Grumpy Chloroceros in Dreth'amar Cavern, for Rootbound Horror in Harandar, and for Binli in the non-instanced Grudge Pit. Petopia confirms all four are spawned rather than standing, but does not document what summons them.
  • The spawn trigger for Deathcoil Skyfiend at the Skybridge in Zul'Aman.
  • Whether the venom-soaked and spectral aura variants added in patch 12.1 (Amani Eagles, Greater Boars, Dire Toads, Capybaras, Smooth Dragon Turtles, Wasps, Writhing Serpents, Giant Cobras) have any taming requirement beyond finding the aura-carrying mob. Petopia lists them as tameable looks with no skill note attached.
  • Whether Ankha and Magria still require removing all armour at Midnight scaling. The mechanic is described in a player comment, not in the guide body.
  • Whether any patch 12.1 Coiled Isle serpent (Newborn Cobra, Incensed Cobra, Wild Snake, Newborn Writhe, Writhing Young, Venom-Bloated Python, Slithering Coiler in The Darkway delve) uses a special taming mechanic. Petopia lists them as spawned pets but publishes no trigger.
  • Whether Blizzard intends to restore N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth. Petopia reports one of the unlock quests has stopped working, with no fix announced.
76 sources read, and how the pass ran
  • www.wowhead.com was blocked this session both by curl (HTTP 403) and by the fetch tool (EGRESS_BLOCKED by the network proxy). No Wowhead NPC page, spell page, or Beast Mastery pet guide was read, so nothing here is sourced from Wowhead.
  • huntsmanslodge.com returned HTTP 500 on every path attempted (root, www, /hunter-pets/). Nothing from that site was used.
  • Whether specific rare-alert addons are 'standard practice' for these camps. Running one is common community behaviour, but none of the live pages I fetched (Petopia, Warcraft Wiki) names or endorses a specific addon, so I have not asserted any addon name as verified.
  • Feign Death as a taming tool. Wowhead's guide only cites Feign Death for skipping trash on the way to Fenryr. I found no live page this session documenting a tame that requires Feign Death as part of the taming sequence itself, so if you have seen that claim, it is not something I could verify.
