Midnight Season 2 · Beast Mastery Hunter

How much DPS is your pet actually doing?

Short version: pet family and pet spec do not change your damage at all. Below is where BM damage really comes from, what the top of the ladder is parsing this week, and how to sim your own number instead of guessing at it.

The pet answer

No pet hits harder than another. Every family and every specialization deals identical damage - the choices that DO move your DPS are the talent that summons a second pet (worth about 10% of your total), and never letting the pets you have go idle.

  • verified

Pet family damage delta in 12.1: zero. Confirmed three independent ways - the maintained wiki's parity statement, Icy Veins' current pets guide (which lists no family damage differences), and the SimulationCraft source code itself, which contains no family-conditional damage anywhere: two sims differing only in pet family produce identical DPS.

  • verified

Pet specialization damage delta: also zero. Ferocity, Tenacity, and Cunning differ only in utility passives, and any pet's spec can be changed at a Stable Master - so pick the pet you like looking at, then make the choices below.

  • verified

The biggest pet DPS decision is a talent, not a species: Animal Companion (the second pet) beats Solitary Companion's +35% single-pet buff by roughly 10% of your TOTAL damage. Wowhead's talent guide calls Solitary 'not a viable choice in any build for competitive purposes'.

  • verified

Small real edges exist at the margins: an Aqiri's +30% pet movement speed is 'a small DPS increase over other pets' from reduced chase time; a Ferocity pet is mandatory only when your group lacks Bloodlust (Primal Rage is a full lust); and the Orc racial adds 1% pet damage.

  • verified

Some pet abilities are DPS LOSSES on autocast: Chimaera's Froststorm Breath and Worm's Burrow Attack (an 8 second channel costing 10 Focus plus 5 per second) both lose damage if left on - and Aqiri's Tendon Rip should be off in M+ so it never slows mobs your tank is gathering.

The pet pick table

So if damage is identical, what are you actually picking?

Ferocity
  • Predator's Thirst: 4% Leech for you and the pet
  • Primal Rage: +30% Haste for 40 sec for all nearby allies (shares the cooldown lockout with Bloodlust/Heroism)

Take it when nobody else brings Bloodlust, because Primal Rage is a full lust. Damage-wise the spec is free.

Tenacity
  • Endurance Training: +5% maximum health for you and the pet
  • Fortitude of the Bear: a passive 3% damage-taken reduction (the old active was retired in 12.x)

Keeps you upright in progression and solo content. Costs you nothing on the meter.

Cunning
  • Pathfinding: +8% movement speed for you and the pet
  • Master's Call: a freedom dispel on a 45 sec cooldown

Master's Call is the reason to bring it: slow-heavy pulls and arena. Also free.

FamilySpecialWorth knowing
AqiriexoticDune Strider: +30% pet movement speedThe uptime pick for raid and M+ - less chase time is a small real DPS gain. Turn Tendon Rip autocast OFF in keys.
ClefthoofexoticBlood of the Rhino: +10% armor, +20% healing receivedThe best solo and tanking pet.
Spirit BeastexoticSpirit Mend heal plus a self-dispelThe self-sufficiency pick; the heal is real utility in delves and open world.
DevilsaurexoticFeast: corpse heal and Focus; also brings the 25% healing-reduction debuffUtility plus Mortal Wounds coverage in one pet.
Core HoundexoticMolten Hide: slight reactive Fire damage; also carries the pet damage-reduction cooldownThe reactive damage is trivial - pick it for the defensive, not the meter.
ChimaeraexoticFroststorm Breath: channeled AoE breathA DPS LOSS if left on permanent autocast - use it manually or not at all.
WormexoticBurrow Attack: 8 sec channeled AoE (10 Focus + 5/sec)Same warning: autocast loses damage. The channel starves the pet's basic attacks.
Pterrordax / FeathermaneexoticUpdraft: slow fall that extends DisengagePure mobility utility.
Carrion Bird, Raptor, Hyena, and 10 more25% healing-reduction debuff (6 sec cooldown, 10 sec duration - effectively permanent)The Mortal Wounds carriers for PvP and healing-check fights: Carrion Bird, Devilsaur, Direhorn, Hydra, Hyena, Lizard, Raptor, Ravager, Riverbeast, Rodent, Scorpid, Wasp, Whiptail.
Beetle, Boar, Turtle, and 5 morePet damage-reduction cooldown (50% for 12 sec, 1 min cooldown)The tankbuster-soak families: Beetle, Boar, Carapid, Core Hound, Mechanical, Scalehide, Shale Beast, Turtle.
Animal Companion - the second pet
  • verified Animal Companion summons the pet from your bonus stable slot alongside your main pet; it obeys Kill Command but cannot use family abilities.
  • verified Taking Solitary Companion (+35% single-pet damage, bigger pet) instead loses roughly 10% of your total damage. The second pet always wins - the 35% buff on one pet does not make up for the whole second pet.

Where the damage actually comes from

Gear on you is gear on your pet. That is most of the answer.

Your petsthe majority

Wowhead: 'most of your damage as a Beast Mastery Hunter comes from your pets, which have to be in melee range'. No source publishes the exact percentage - your own log's damage-by-ability view shows yours.

Pet ability scalingyour Attack Power

Pet abilities compute from the HUNTER's Attack Power - live tooltips: Kill Command 247.2% of AP, Wild Thrash 191% of AP. Pets also inherit your Crit and Haste. Better gear on you IS better pet damage.

Mastery: Master of Beasts+15% pets / +8% shots at baseline

The pet multiplier, growing with Mastery rating and applying to the main pet, the second pet, Dire Beasts, and every summoned beast - which is why Mastery tops the stat priorities.

Aug 25 tuning (pet cleave)est. +4-10% AoE

Live with this week's reset: Wild Thrash deals 300% increased damage at 3+ targets (was 200%) and Beast Cleave cleaves 70% of pet damage (was 55%). Single-target unchanged. Beware: live tooltips still show the old values - the blue post is the truth.

Maximizing it

Wowhead's Pack Leader priority for all situations. Icy Veins agrees on Mastery first but swaps Haste above Crit on pure single-target and calls Haste 'absolutely worthless on AoE' - which is exactly why you sim your own character instead of arguing about the middle of the list. First diminishing-returns tier: Crit/Mastery 1380, Haste 1320, Versatility 1620.

Stat priority: Weapon Damage > Agility > Mastery > Crit > Haste > Versatility

Pack LeaderAll content

The unanimous pick: Wowhead calls it strongest in all situations, all four Icy Veins builds use it, and all top-50 M+ BM hunters on murlok.io run it. In archon's 14-day M+ keys-7+ window it averages 216.3k DPS at 97.8% usage.

Dark RangerNot recommended

Tankier but 'far behind on damage in all situations' (Icy Veins). Archon's M+ window shows 200.9k DPS at 2.1% usage - roughly a 7.7% deficit; its raid sample is too small to quote as more than directional.

The rules that move the meter

Bestial Wrath windows are the fight

It is BM's only damage cooldown: 30 sec cooldown, 15 sec of +20% damage, and the vast majority of your damage happens inside it. Pre-stack potion, on-use trinket, and racials; in AoE, have Beast Cleave rolling before you press it; the first Kill Command each window fires Stampede under Pack Leader, so its aim matters.

Cost of ignoring it: Drifting the cooldown even a few seconds per cycle compounds into the largest self-inflicted loss the guides name.

Kill Command never caps, never doubles

Never reach 2 charges, always cast it under Nature's Ally (+30%), weave a filler between casts instead of doubling, and bank a charge when Bestial Wrath is within about 3 seconds so you enter the window with two.

Cost of ignoring it: Capped charges are thrown-away casts of your hardest hitter.

Barbed Shot below 75 Focus, never at 2 charges

The bleed is a rolling periodic now - the old Frenzy upkeep is GONE (removed in 12.0.0). Barbed Shot exists to prevent Focus capping and feed the machine.

Cost of ignoring it: Focus capping and charge capping - the two silent losses every log audit finds first.

An idle pet is zero DPS

If the pet is not attacking, Bloodshed applies no bleed at all; a pet on the edge of a pack loses Beast Cleave and Wild Thrash hits. Use Kill Command and Barbed Shot's pet charge on target swaps to close gaps.

Cost of ignoring it: The majority of your damage source standing still. Nothing else on this page matters if the pets are not hitting.

Rotation polish is single digits; the pet talent is ten

Guide changelogs price talent and pacing tweaks at roughly 2-2.5% each; the Animal Companion node is about 10%. Fix the big rock first.

Cost of ignoring it: Min-maxing stat gems while running Solitary Companion is polishing the wrong end.

Calculating yours

For your character, on your gear, at your target count.

  1. 1.Simming pet families is a wasted sim run

In SimulationCraft's own source, a pet family maps only to its spec bucket, whose effects are the non-damage passives; every pet has identical base stats and the default sim pet is literally named 'duck'. Two sims differing only in family produce identical DPS. That is the calculation you asked for, done at the engine level.

  2. 2.Sim what actually varies: talents, gear, stats

Build your character's sim profile and compare talent loadouts (several percent swings), trinkets and weapon upgrades (Weapon Damage tops the priority), and secondary allocations - the Haste-versus-Crit ordering genuinely flips between single-target and AoE configurations, so sim both.

  3. 3.Measure your real pet share and your losses from logs

No site publishes a global pet-damage percentage, so your own damage-by-ability breakdown is the only source for YOUR split. Audit for the classic losses: Bestial Wrath drift, capped Kill Command and Barbed Shot charges, Focus capping, and pet downtime on swaps.

    Open the tool →
  4. 4.Compare yourself to the right bracket

Compare your percentile within the archon brackets above, keeping their qualifiers - 95th percentile, 14-day window, no published item level. And remember every number predates the Aug 25 AoE buff; expect BM AoE figures to drift up an estimated 4-10% this week.

Not yet confirmed

  • The exact percentage of total BM damage done by pets in 12.1 - published nowhere consulted. Closest anchors: the second pet alone is ~10% of total, and Wowhead's qualitative 'most of your damage'.
  • Whether (and which) pet damage buffs snapshot - undocumented on every page read.
  • The item level of the archon benchmark populations - not captured, so no ilvl is attached to the DPS numbers.
  • The measured (not estimated) size of the Aug 25 AoE buff - only the Wowhead writer estimate (+4-10% AoE, 0% single-target) exists today; guide pages still describe the pre-buff values.
  • The old 'pets inherit 60% of Attack Power' line circulating in wikis is HISTORICAL data and is deliberately absent from this page.
