Strong when

Plan around

  • Pet pathing and AI can lose uptime
  • Target swaps can be delayed by pet travel
  • AoE is centered around the main target and Beast Cleave uptime
  • Single-target can lose a lot when you talent too heavily into full AoE
Character setup

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Weapon Damage
  2. 2.Agility
  3. 3.Mastery
  4. 4.Critical Strike
  5. 5.Haste
  6. 6.Versatility

Weapon damage and Agility are the foundation. Mastery is the best secondary because it increases pet, Dire Beast, summoned beast, and many shot contributions. Critical Strike and Haste are close and can swap by build, trinkets, target count, and current gear; Versatility is usually last unless survival is the limiting factor.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Optimize your cooldown window: use Bestial Wrath on cooldown as often as possible and take full advantage of everything it grants - Stampede! for Pack Leader, Wailing Dead and Withering Fire for Dark Ranger.
  • Maximize your Kill Commands: never let Kill Command sit at two charges, keep every cast buffed by Nature's Ally, and fit as many as possible inside your cooldown window.
  • Manage your pets: keep them attacking the correct target, move and swap them deliberately with Dash, and never open a cooldown window with an idle pet.
Pack LeaderPlays around Nature's Ally and Howl of the Pack Leader, but is otherwise very straightforward.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Barbed Shot - if Bestial Wrath comes off cooldown in the next 3 seconds
  2. 2.Bestial Wrath
  3. 3.Kill Command - if Howl of the Pack Leader or Nature's Ally is active
  4. 4.Barbed Shot
  5. 5.Cobra Shot

AoE priority

  1. 1.Bestial Wrath - only while Beast Cleave is active
  2. 2.Wild Thrash - activates Beast Cleave - this replaced Multi-Shot as the AoE trigger
  3. 3.Kill Command - if Howl of the Pack Leader or Nature's Ally is active and you are close to capping charges
  4. 4.Barbed Shot - on your priority target - do not multi-dot it
  5. 5.Cobra Shot

Opener

  1. 1.Before pull, apply Hunter's Mark to the priority target.
  2. 2.Cast Misdirection on your tank.
  3. 3.Pre-cast an on-use trinket about two seconds before the pull.
  4. 4.On pull, cast Barbed Shot.
  5. 5.Use your potion, stat racials, and remaining trinkets.
  6. 6.Cast Bestial Wrath - make sure your pet is already attacking the target.
  7. 7.Weave Kill Command and Barbed Shot until the window ends, then continue the normal priority.
Dark RangerPlays around the cooldown window and weaves between Kill Command, Barbed Shot, and Black Arrow.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Bestial Wrath
  2. 2.Kill Command - if the Nature's Ally buff is active
  3. 3.Black Arrow - if Withering Fire is active
  4. 4.Wailing Arrow
  5. 5.Barbed Shot
  6. 6.Black Arrow
  7. 7.Cobra Shot

AoE priority

  1. 1.Bestial Wrath - only while Beast Cleave is active
  2. 2.Wild Thrash - activates Beast Cleave - this replaced Multi-Shot as the AoE trigger
  3. 3.Kill Command - if Nature's Ally is active and you are close to capping charges
  4. 4.Black Arrow - if Withering Fire is up
  5. 5.Barbed Shot - on your priority target - do not multi-dot it
  6. 6.Wailing Arrow
  7. 7.Black Arrow
  8. 8.Cobra Shot

Opener

  1. 1.Before pull, apply Hunter's Mark to the priority target.
  2. 2.Cast Misdirection on your tank.
  3. 3.Pre-cast an on-use trinket about two seconds before the pull.
  4. 4.On pull, cast Black Arrow, then Barbed Shot.
  5. 5.Use your potion, stat racials, and remaining trinkets.
  6. 6.Cast Bestial Wrath - make sure your pet is already attacking the target.
  7. 7.Cast Kill Command, Black Arrow, Kill Command, Barbed Shot, Kill Command, Wailing Arrow, Black Arrow.
  8. 8.Continue the normal priority.

Pre-combat checks

  • Apply Hunter's Mark to the priority target.
  • Cast Misdirection on the tank (or on your pet in solo content).
  • Make sure your pet is alive and summoned - Revive Pet or Call Pet if not.
  • Check pet auto-casts: Claw / Bite / Smack ON; Dash, Spirit Walk, and Growl OFF.

Major cooldowns

Bestial Wrath

  • Use it on cooldown, as often as you possibly can - losing one use loses a lot of damage.
  • Bloodshed is applied to whatever your pet is attacking; an idle pet means no bleed.
  • Nature's Ally indirectly strengthens Kill Command by adding another pet that casts it.
  • The initial hit is large and affected by Beast Cleave - with Nature's Ally, every additional hit triggers its own Beast Cleave, so enter AoE windows with Beast Cleave already active.
  • Pack Leader: your next Kill Command triggers Stampede! - a 30-yard line of animals with no height adjustment, so mind terrain and positioning.
  • Dark Ranger: grants a Deathblow, Withering Fire (stronger Black Arrows), and Wailing Dead's Dark Hound - which triggers Pact of the Hollow, benefits from Dire Cleave, and unlocks Wailing Arrow.

Trinkets, potions, and racials

  • Bestial Wrath is your only cooldown, so line racials, stat trinkets, and potions up with it.
  • Anything that boosts direct damage should be active before Bestial Wrath strikes the target; macroing them together is fine.

Advanced tips

Perfecting your cooldown window

  • Approach every window with two Kill Command charges banked; Dark Rangers should also enter with no Deathblow active, since Withering Fire grants one.
  • Confirm your pet is on the priority target so Bloodshed runs its full duration.
  • During the window, spend as many Kill Commands as possible, all buffed by Nature's Ally.
  • In Mythic+, the cooldown is short enough to come back near the end of packs - hold it if the fight will not last.
  • Pack Leader: stand at a similar height to the enemy and not too far away so Stampede! connects; with Killer Cobra, prioritize Cobra Shot over Barbed Shot during Bestial Wrath.
  • Dark Ranger: the Dire Cleave hound turns the window into AoE burst - line it up with add spawns in raid; when Withering Fire fades mid-window, use Barbed Shot over Black Arrow; use Wailing Arrow before it expires and never let Kill Command cap while holding it.

Pet management

  • Use pet attack macros so pet target swaps never lag behind your own.
  • Move pets deliberately with Dash and re-check auto-cast toggles after every pet swap.
  • BM does full damage while moving - treat every movement mechanic as free uptime other ranged specs do not get.
Build

Talents and hero trees

Use Pack Leader for the single-target profile below and Pack Leader when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.

Recommended starting profiles

Single-target: Pack Leader

Pack Leader is the recommended single-target raid build in 12.0.7. Dark Ranger remains playable and gives more personal defensive tech through Smoke Screen.

  • Pack Leader hero tree
  • Stat priority: Weapon Damage > Agility
  • Interrupt: Counter Shot

Multi-target: Pack Leader

Pack Leader is also recommended for AoE and Mythic+ because it is strong, simple, and naturally feeds beast damage into cleave.

  • Pack Leader hero tree
  • Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
  • Interrupt: Counter Shot

Common mistakes

  • Playing as if Frenzy still exists
  • Focus capping instead of dumping with Cobra Shot
  • Forgetting Wild Thrash and dropping Beast Cleave in AoE
  • Pressing Bestial Wrath while sitting on too many Barbed Shot charges
  • Forgetting to re-summon a dead pet

Game plan

Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.

No reviewed PvP baseline is published for this spec yet. Use the live tree to apply the matchup focus above rather than treating a PvE build as an arena answer.
