How Discipline Priest wins
Discipline heals through damage. You ramp Atonement across the raid with Power Word: Radiance and Shield, then deal damage with Penance, Mind Blast, and Smite to heal everyone at once.
- Role
- Healer
- Stat lead
- Item Level / Intellect then Haste
- Single target
- Voidweaver
- Cleave / AoE
- Oracle
Strong when
- Strong scripted raid healing via ramps
- Deals real damage
- Great utility (Pain Suppression, barriers)
Plan around
- Ramp timing is a skill check
- Weak reactive and spot healing
- Mana pressure on unplanned damage
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Item Level / Intellect
- 2.Haste
- 3.Critical Strike
- 4.Versatility
- 5.Mastery
Item level and Intellect are the first filter. Haste shortens application and ramp time; Critical Strike improves both damage and healing. Secondary stat value changes with your hero talents, trinkets, encounter cadence, and current gear, so use this as a starting point and validate close upgrades with your own sims or logs.

Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Always be casting: keep Shadow Word: Pain maintained and cast Penance and Smite during downtime to make the most of your Atonements - the smaller heals really add up over an encounter.
- Discipline is a ramping healer: set up a large batch of Atonements before known damage events, then deal damage until they expire. Do not try to maintain Atonement on everyone forever - that is the classic new-Disc mistake.
- Mythic+ can be polarizing: in dungeons no other healer covers your cooldown gaps, so smart use of the revamped Archangel, Pain Suppression, and Ultimate Penitence (which doubles as a large defensive) is key.
OracleThe first list is the raid ramp priority; the second is the Oracle Mythic+ priority, which is shield-centric in 12.0.5 - drink often and mind your mana.
Single-target priority
- 1.Shadow Word: Pain - maintain on enemies if the remaining duration is under 20 seconds
- 2.Void Shield - any time it is available
- 3.Power Word: Shield - for your ramp, and on cooldown if mana is in good shape - execute-heavy fights let you cast more shields
- 4.Plea / Surge of Light / Flash Heal - to cheaply apply Atonement
- 5.Evangelism - on cooldown, just before high damage, to apply 5 Atonements
- 6.Power Word: Radiance - both charges back to back - one on melee and one on ranged if allies are spread
- 7.Shadow Word: Death - if the target is sub-20%, or while Mindbender / Shadowfiend is active for Inescapable Torment damage
- 8.Penance - defensively, to heal an injured ally - do not overcap charges
- 9.Mind Blast - on cooldown - it empowers your next Penance through Dark Indulgence
- 10.Smite - spam during downtime
- 11.Power Word: Shield - freely with Weal and Woe stacks when mana is plentiful
AoE priority
- 1.Shadow Word: Pain - Mythic+ priority - maintain and spread it: Penance offensively on trash pulls to spread Pain, defensively on single-target bosses
- 2.Void Shield - any time it is available
- 3.Shadow Mend procs - weave in as needed for high spot-healing
- 4.Evangelism - to apply Atonements; Power Word: Radiance for a full refresh, or defensive Penance for individual refreshes
- 5.Shadow Word: Death - on sub-20% targets, or as a damage global on the move
- 6.Penance - defensively on allies when Pain is already spread
- 7.Mind Blast
- 8.Penance - defensively on allies
- 9.Smite - spam, with Penance on cooldown
- 10.Power Word: Shield - as needed to supplement - constant use can OOM you
Opener
- 1.The full raid ramp: apply Atonement to 5 allies with Power Word: Shield, Plea, and Flash Heal.
- 2.Cast Evangelism to apply 5 more Atonements - it also casts a Power Word: Radiance and makes your next two Radiances instant.
- 3.Use both Power Word: Radiance charges to cover the final 10 players, for 20 Atonements total.
- 4.The Evangelism update cut ramp setup to roughly 8 seconds from the old 15.
- 5.Then unleash your damage rotation into the raid-wide hit.
VoidweaverThe Voidweaver Mythic+ priority - both lists are the same dungeon list. Void Blast replaces the Smite spam and Shadow Word: Death runs on cooldown for Expiation.
Single-target priority
- 1.Shadow Word: Pain - apply at least one and let Penance spread the DoT - it is much stronger in Midnight
- 2.Void Shield - any time it is available
- 3.Evangelism - or Power Word: Radiance if Evangelism is on cooldown, to apply Atonements
- 4.Shadow Word: Death - always on cooldown, even out of execute range - Expiation value is very high damage
- 5.Mind Blast
- 6.Penance - offensively
- 7.Void Blast - spam, with Penance on cooldown
- 8.Power Word: Shield - on cooldown during downtime
AoE priority
- 1.Same list as single target - the Voidweaver dungeon priority does not change with target count
- 2.Shadow Word: Pain - apply one and let Penance spread it
- 3.Void Shield - any time it is available
- 4.Evangelism - or Power Word: Radiance if Evangelism is on cooldown
- 5.Shadow Word: Death - always on cooldown for Expiation
- 6.Mind Blast
- 7.Penance - offensively
- 8.Void Blast - spam, with Penance on cooldown
- 9.Power Word: Shield - on cooldown during downtime
Pre-combat checks
- Run the one-time console command '/console cameraSmoothTrackingStyle 0' so your camera stops swinging when you Penance an ally.
- Set up nochanneling Smite and Penance macros so spamming either never clips the Penance channel and every bolt launches.
Major cooldowns
Evangelism
- Use on cooldown, just before high damage periods, to apply 5 Atonements.
- It now also casts a Power Word: Radiance and makes your next two Radiance casts instant, cutting the ramp to roughly 8 seconds.
Ultimate Penitence
- A very competitive healing cooldown - use it separately from Evangelism to be efficient with your cooldown coverage.
- In Mythic+ it doubles as a large defensive, so look for moments when you and the team are taking heavy damage.
Archangel and Pain Suppression
- In dungeons you must cover your own cooldown gaps: the revamped Archangel brings a flat healing and absorption increase, and Pain Suppression mitigates damage you cannot heal through in time.
Shadowfiend and execute sniping
- Casting Shadow Word: Death on sub-20% enemies is one of the most important things you can do in raid - every add wave is a chance to snipe an execute.
- Spawning a Shadowfiend regenerates mana and adds significant Atonement application; the extra mana funnels into more Weal and Woe-buffed Power Word: Shields.
- Since 12.0.5 the raid build no longer runs Expiation, so you do not need to DoT the execute target in advance.
Advanced tips
Atonement interactions
- Damaging trinkets and non-Priest damage do not convert into Atonement healing.
- AoE abilities like Inescapable Torment and Holy Nova only convert into Atonement from one enemy struck.
- Outside damage-taken modifiers do not affect Atonement: a boss taking 100% more or 99% less damage changes nothing, and an immune boss produces zero Atonement healing.
Timing ramps
- Boss mod timers often track when a cast begins, not when damage lands - note the cast duration and start your ramp so the roughly 6 seconds of Atonement application finishes just before impact.
- Use a notepad, Method Raid Tools, or a note addon to record per-mechanic lead times; after the first successful ramp you can repeat it on cooldown at the same timer points.
- For raid-activated damage (like killing orbs on Nexus-King Salhadaar), use 'landmark' timing - pick a point in the fight your raid reliably reaches and ramp off that instead of the timer.
Talents and hero trees
Use Voidweaver for the single-target profile below and Oracle when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Voidweaver
Voidweaver adds Entropic Rift and void damage for stronger single-target healing-through-damage.
- Voidweaver hero tree
- Stat priority: Intellect > Haste
Multi-target: Oracle
Oracle adds Premonition and Halo synergy for the biggest scripted raid ramps.
- Oracle hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents

Raid - Oracle
The recommended raid starting point. Defensive Penance applies Atonement, Piety protects against waste, and Evangelism turns a prepared spread into a scheduled raid-healing window.
CAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADsAz2MzMYmhZbmtZmZmhZAAAAAAAAAAMDLzgZmZYGmBmpZamBYmFMEGzyAMGsAAAjxMjBzAMzMaGGMythic+ - Oracle
The stable key build. Keep Void Shield and Penance cycling through party damage, use short Atonement spreads before planned pulls, and move utility points for the dungeon rather than copying a raid tree unchanged.
CAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADsYwyMjZmZmhZbGzMzMDzAAAAAAAAAAYMWmBzMzYzYmBMNTMAzsghwYWGgxgFAAYMzMjBzAMzMTwARaid - Voidweaver
A viable alternative for encounters that reward planned Entropic Rift windows. Hold Mind Blast for meaningful Rift value and avoid sacrificing an imminent defensive Penance or lifesaving application window.

Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Priest toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Movement
Mass Dispel and Power Infusion are premier raid utility every roster wants.
Interface and macros
Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.
What improves results
- Ramp Atonement before known damage; Radiance is an applicator, not a panic heal
- Use Evangelism mid-ramp: shield 5 allies first, then let it add 5 Atonements and make your next two Radiances instant
- Weave Power Word: Shield or Void Shield after Penance to use Weal and Woe
- Oracle is the stable default: use Penance defensively because it applies Atonement and supports Piety's overheal protection
- Voidweaver needs planned Mind Blast and stationary Entropic Rift windows
- Shadow Word: Death instantly frees a Polymorphed ally - any damage breaks the sheep, so a quick SW:D bails out a mis-sheeped or CC'd teammate
Common mistakes
- Ramping too late
- Splitting Evangelism from the ramp so its instant Radiances are wasted
- Trying to maintain Atonement on everyone forever instead of ramping
- Using Void Shield after Penance and wasting its setup value
- Letting Shadow Word: Pain drop
FAQ
3 quick answersWhen do I press Evangelism?
After you have prepared an Atonement spread, not as the first ramp button. Evangelism extends the Atonements already active; it does not create the spread for you.
Should Oracle Penance be offensive or defensive?
Use Oracle Penance defensively by default. It applies Atonement and is a reliable part of your healing setup; only depart from that when the immediate healing plan genuinely permits it.
Which trinket should I target first?
For raid, Vaelgor's Final Stare is the primary on-use because its cooldown naturally aligns with Evangelism. In Mythic+, prioritize Litany of Lightblind Wrath as the on-use option.
