Patch 12.0.7Updated Jul 31, 2026

Strong when

  • Excellent AoE threat and damage
  • Strong self-healing through Soul Fragments
  • Great magic mitigation and tank mobility

Plan around

  • Physical spikes hurt when Fragments are low
  • Fragment and Fiery Brand planning add complexity
  • Less passive armor than plate tanks
Character setup

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Agility
  2. 2.Versatility
  3. 3.Haste
  4. 4.Critical Strike
  5. 5.Mastery

Agility and item level are the first check. Versatility leads the secondaries because it flattens spike damage while adding flat output; Haste speeds Soul Fragment and Fracture generation, which is both offense and self-healing. Critical Strike is mostly offensive, and Mastery trails. Weight Versatility harder on progression and let Haste climb once the damage patterns feel comfortable.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Generators are key: when there is a priority conflict, keeping generators on cooldown wins - Fracture casts and Soul Fragment generation drive the hero-tree procs.
  • Prioritize spenders by Soul cost: always use Soul spenders with as many Souls as possible for maximum efficiency per global.
  • Avoid overcapping resources when possible: it is sometimes inevitable, but try to build and spend in waves.
  • Press cooldowns as they become available: procs get wasted if abilities sit off cooldown for long periods.
AnnihilatorPuts a major focus on building Voidfall procs through casts of Fracture and then spending them. AoE is nearly the same list with Fel Devastation slightly higher priority; the multi-target priority starts at 2 targets.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Infernal Strike - off GCD if you are at or near 2 charges and will not need it for movement soon
  2. 2.Maintain 75 Fury - if you are at 2 stacks of Voidfall or Metamorphosis is about to come off cooldown
  3. 3.Metamorphosis - if you will not overcap duration and Spirit Bomb has more than 10s left on cooldown
  4. 4.Fracture - if you are at or near 2 charges
  5. 5.Spirit Bomb - with 4+ Souls if Fiery Brand is about to run out
  6. 6.Fiery Brand - if the debuff is not currently active
  7. 7.Spirit Bomb - with 5+ Souls - if this activated Voidfall, cast Soul Cleave on the next GCD
  8. 8.Immolation Aura
  9. 9.Sigil of Flame
  10. 10.Sigil of Spite - if you will not overcap Souls
  11. 11.Soul Cleave - with 1 or more Souls
  12. 12.Fel Devastation - if you have at least 50 Fury
  13. 13.Soul Cleave - to spend Fury at 0 Souls
  14. 14.Fracture - if you won't cap Fury or Souls
  15. 15.Felblade - if you won't cap Fury
  16. 16.Throw Glaive - for filler or when kiting

AoE priority

  1. 1.Infernal Strike - off GCD if you are at or near 2 charges and will not need it for movement soon
  2. 2.Maintain 75 Fury - if you are at 2 stacks of Voidfall or Metamorphosis is about to come off cooldown
  3. 3.Metamorphosis - if you will not overcap duration and Spirit Bomb has more than 10s left on cooldown
  4. 4.Fracture - at or near 2 charges
  5. 5.Spirit Bomb - with 4+ Souls if Fiery Brand is about to run out
  6. 6.Fiery Brand - if the debuff is not currently active
  7. 7.Spirit Bomb - with 5+ Souls - if this activated Voidfall, cast Soul Cleave on the next GCD
  8. 8.Immolation Aura
  9. 9.Sigil of Flame
  10. 10.Sigil of Spite - if you will not cap Souls
  11. 11.Felblade - if you have 5+ Souls but not enough Fury to Spirit Bomb
  12. 12.Fel Devastation - if you have at least 50 Fury - slightly higher priority than in single target
  13. 13.Soul Cleave - to spend Fury and any available Souls
  14. 14.Fracture - if you won't cap Souls
  15. 15.Felblade - if you won't cap Fury
  16. 16.Throw Glaive - for filler or when kiting

Opener

  1. 1.Precast Sigil of Flame in single-target or on a single pack.
  2. 2.Infernal Strike into the enemy (or the edge of the pack), casting Spirit Bomb as you land if you have Souls and Fury saved from the previous pull.
  3. 3.Use Fracture to generate Souls and Fury.
  4. 4.Use Immolation Aura.
  5. 5.Use Fracture if you won't overcap Souls.
  6. 6.Use Fiery Brand for the Fire damage buff.
  7. 7.Use Spirit Bomb with 5+ Souls.
  8. 8.Use Sigil of Spite, then Fracture if you won't overcap Souls.
  9. 9.Use Felblade to generate Fury if you don't have enough.
  10. 10.Use Metamorphosis once enemies are grouped.
  11. 11.Use Spirit Bomb with 6 Souls, then Soul Cleave, then Fracture.
  12. 12.Fully channel Fel Devastation for Souls.
  13. 13.Use Soul Cleave at 0 Souls, then continue to the main rotation.
Aldrachi ReaverFocuses on building and spending Soul Fragments to gain Art of the Glaive procs. Soul generation takes priority over everything else in a conflict, and uptime is critical because the constant flow of glaives maintains your buffs.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Infernal Strike - off GCD if you are at or near 2 charges and will not need it for movement soon
  2. 2.Metamorphosis
  3. 3.Fracture - if you are at or near 2 charges
  4. 4.Fracture - with Rending Strike on your priority target to proc Reaver's Mark and generate Souls and Fury
  5. 5.Spirit Bomb - with 4+ Souls if Fiery Brand is about to run out
  6. 6.Fiery Brand - if the debuff is not currently active
  7. 7.Spirit Bomb - with 5+ Souls
  8. 8.Soul Cleave - with Glaive Flurry to proc Fury of the Aldrachi and trigger Thrill of the Fight
  9. 9.Sigil of Spite - to activate Art of the Glaive if you do not already have a Reaver's Glaive available
  10. 10.Reaver's Glaive - to activate the Rending Strike and Glaive Flurry buffs
  11. 11.Immolation Aura
  12. 12.Sigil of Flame
  13. 13.Soul Cleave - with 1 or more Souls
  14. 14.Fel Devastation - if you have at least 50 Fury

Pre-combat checks

  • Use your consumables - food, flask, and weapon oils. This applies to raids, dungeons, delves, and open-world content alike.

Major cooldowns

Offensive cooldowns

  • Using offensive cooldowns as they become available is generally the best option.
  • Fel Devastation (40s; 28-34s with Darkglare Boon): generally on cooldown. With Fiery Demise and Down in Flames, sync it with one cast of Fiery Brand.
  • Soul Carver (1 min): on cooldown, with fewer than 3 Souls. With Fiery Demise talented, sync it with Fiery Brand.
  • Sigil of Spite (1 min): on cooldown, ideally synced with Fiery Brand if talented into Fiery Demise.

Defensive cooldowns

  • None of Vengeance's defensives are particularly powerful, so maximize usage by pressing them as they become available; hold briefly if you are not actively tanking.
  • Metamorphosis (2 min, reduced by talents): on cooldown - but not if you are already in Meta from another proc with more than 5 seconds left, since it overwrites rather than extends.
  • Fel Devastation: generally on cooldown when below 70% health; sync with Fiery Brand if running Fiery Demise and Down in Flames.
  • Fiery Brand (1 min; 48s with Down in Flames): on cooldown. Hold up to 10 seconds for a large tankbuster; with Down in Flames, sync one charge with offensive cooldowns.
  • Demon Spikes (20s, reduced by haste): whenever no other defensive is active, or when charges would fully recharge before active defensives run out.
  • Darkness (5 min; 3 with Pitch Black): on cooldown as much as possible; hold for group damage phases, especially multi-hit events or big add pulls.

Advanced tips

Fracture optimization

  • There is very little optimization left for Vengeance after the Midnight pruning - Fracture timing is the main one, and it applies to Annihilator.
  • At full Voidfall stacks, or while spending them, avoid pressing Fracture since you cannot generate; prioritize it more heavily when you are about to proc the third stack.
  • Annihilator extras: hold Metamorphosis a few seconds if Voidfall meteor animations are still resolving (a Mass Acceleration bug), and try to enter Meta with maximum Souls to exploit the Spirit Bomb reset.

Talents and hero trees

Use Fel-Scarred for the single-target profile below and Aldrachi Reaver when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.

Recommended starting profiles

Single-target: Fel-Scarred

Annihilator builds Voidfall procs through Fracture casts and spends them for strong steady single-target damage and mitigation.

  • Fel-Scarred hero tree
  • Stat priority: Agility > Versatility
  • Interrupt: Disrupt

Multi-target: Aldrachi Reaver

Aldrachi Reaver maximizes Soul generation and Reaver's Glaive for the best big-pull sustain and threat.

  • Aldrachi Reaver hero tree
  • Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
  • Interrupt: Disrupt

Raid Progression - Fel-Scarred

Default raid tank build. Fel-Scarred leans on Demonsurge and Metamorphosis uptime for stronger single-target damage while the defensive loop stays unchanged: Fracture feeds Soul Fragments, Spirit Bomb applies Frailty, Soul Cleave heals, and Fiery Brand covers scheduled busters. Untethered Rage and Soul Carver round out the damage profile; take Soul Barrier on its row when magic spikes are the thing that kills you.

Mythic+ - Aldrachi Reaver

Default key build. Aldrachi Reaver maximizes Soul generation and Reaver's Glaive value, which is exactly what big pulls want: Sigil of Spite and Soul Sigils feed extra Soul Fragments, Spirit Bomb keeps Frailty rolling on the whole pack, and Sigil of Silence handles the caster packs Disrupt cannot cover alone. Keen Engagement and Preemptive Strike are the standard hero-choice picks.

Flex - Control and Magic Defense

Swap-in package rather than a full archetype. Take Soul Barrier and Soul Cleanse when magic damage dominates, Sigil of Chains when the route needs adds dragged into cleave range, and Sigil of Silence plus Chaos Nova for interrupt-heavy weeks. Champion of the Glaive and Master of the Glaive are the class-tree flex points you trade to afford it.

Arena - Tormentor Pressure (3v3)

Vengeance in arena is a pressure-and-peel tank. Tormentor stacks damage taken on the kill target, Demonic Trample and Infernal Strike keep you glued to it, Jagged Spikes punishes melee cleaves, and Detainment Imprison sets up kill windows. Reverse Magic and Illidan's Grasp flex by enemy comp.

Survival and control

Utility, defensives, and movement

Your Demon Hunter toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.

Elite mobility from Double Jump, Fel Rush, and Vengeful Retreat; Darkness is a raid-wide dodge cooldown.

Interrupt: Disrupt - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Vengeance macros page.

Interface and macros

Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.

Better Blizzplates - cleaner, threat-colored nameplates with cast bars and cooldown text - the nameplate upgrade nearly every top player runs.
OmniCD - party and enemy defensive/utility cooldown tracking - the biggest information edge the base UI still does not show.
Mythic Dungeon Tools - build and follow pull-by-pull Mythic+ routes.
Details! (optional) - deep damage/healing breakdowns and Warcraft Logs uploads beyond Midnight's built-in meter.
Method Raid Tools - external assignments and pull timers for progression.

Common mistakes

  • Spending Souls at full health
  • Letting Demon Spikes sit unused
  • Saving Fiery Brand so long it is wasted
  • Overcapping Fury instead of Soul Cleaving

FAQ

5 quick answers

What is the best Vengeance Demon Hunter stat priority in Midnight Season 1?

Agility first, then Versatility > Haste > Critical Strike > Mastery. Versatility flattens spike damage while adding output, and Haste speeds Soul Fragment and Fracture generation - which is self-healing, not just damage. Lean harder on Versatility during progression.

Which Vengeance hero tree should I use?

Fel-Scarred for raid and single-target - Demonsurge and Metamorphosis uptime carry priority damage. Aldrachi Reaver for Mythic+ and big pulls, where maximum Soul generation and Reaver's Glaive value turn into sustain and threat.

How does Vengeance actually mitigate damage?

By playing well offensively. Fracture and Immolation Aura generate Soul Fragments, Spirit Bomb consumes them for Frailty, and Soul Cleave converts Fury into healing. Demon Spikes covers physical strings, Fiery Brand is scheduled for busters, and Metamorphosis is the emergency and pull-opening cooldown. A Vengeance player who stops attacking stops mitigating.

Spirit Bomb or Soul Cleave?

Spirit Bomb when you have four to five Souls banked and want Frailty on everything - it is the AoE and sustain engine. Soul Cleave when you need Fury dumped into immediate healing or there is nothing worth Frailty. Do not spend Souls at full health, and do not overcap Fury while deciding.

What is the Vengeance interrupt toolkit in Mythic+?

Disrupt on the shortest tank-interrupt cooldown in the bracket, backed by Sigil of Silence for caster packs, Sigil of Misery and Chaos Nova for stops, and Imprison for a clean single-target shutdown. Plan Sigils before the pull; they are your route tools, not panic buttons.
