Demon Hunter · Devourer
Devourer is Demon Hunter's third specialization and its only ranged one: a mid-range Intellect caster that trades Fel for the Void and deals Cosmic damage from about 25 yards. It harvests Soul Fragments with Consume and Soul Immolation, sweeps them up with Reap, dumps Fury into a cooldown-free Void Ray channel, and spends 50 Souls to enter Void Metamorphosis, where Collapsing Star is the payoff.

How Devourer Demon Hunter wins
Devourer is Demon Hunter's third specialization and its only ranged one: a mid-range Intellect caster that trades Fel for the Void and deals Cosmic damage from about 25 yards. It harvests Soul Fragments with Consume and Soul Immolation, sweeps them up with Reap, dumps Fury into a cooldown-free Void Ray channel, and spends 50 Souls to enter Void Metamorphosis, where Collapsing Star is the payoff.
- Role
- Ranged DPS
- Stat lead
- Intellect then Mastery
- Single target
- Void-Scarred
- Cleave / AoE
- Void-Scarred
Strong when
- Demon Hunter mobility on a ranged damage profile
- Consume is castable while moving, so movement costs little
- Keeps Disrupt, Void Nova, Blur and Darkness as a ranged player
- Void Ray has no cooldown, so damage is not gated behind a window
Plan around
- A 25 yard band is short for ranged and punishes knockbacks
- Void Ray is a frontal, so facing errors waste a whole spender
- Damage still concentrates in Void Metamorphosis despite the 12.1 cut
- Cannot use Havoc or Vengeance armor - it needs Intellect leather
What changed for this spec
Mastery: Monster Within had its effectiveness inside Void Metamorphosis cut significantly, and the baseline damage of Devourer's abilities was raised to compensate. The intent is a spec that is worth playing between cooldowns rather than one that idles until it transforms. The practical effect is that the rotation outside Void Metamorphosis now matters: Consume filler discipline and Reap timing are worth real damage instead of being a wait. It also moved the hero-tree balance, which is why Void-Scarred's faster transformation cycle is the Season 2 default rather than Annihilator's longer ramp.

Not independently verified for this spec. The ordering follows the Season 2 Void-Scarred consensus, and the published sources genuinely disagree on the secondaries: Void-Scarred writeups lead with Mastery, Annihilator writeups lead with Haste in single target, and Mythic+ writeups commonly lead with Haste for Void Metamorphosis uptime. The orderings are close enough to share one gear set. Open question: no Devourer sim source was reachable for this pass, so sim your own character before gemming.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Intellect
- 2.Mastery
- 3.Haste
- 4.Critical Strike
- 5.Versatility
Intellect and item level first, as always. The order after that is genuinely hero-tree dependent and the published guides do not agree on it. Void-Scarred, the Season 2 default, wants Mastery: Monster Within as high as it will go, because its damage is concentrated inside Void Metamorphosis where the Cosmic multiplier is largest, with Haste close behind for how fast it cycles transformations. Annihilator inverts that in single target and prefers Haste to ramp its transformation, then flips back to Mastery in AoE. Mythic+ writeups commonly lead with Haste for Void Metamorphosis uptime and Void Ray channel speed. The gap between these orderings is small enough that they share one gear set, so treat this as a starting point and sim your own character before you commit gems and enchants.

Derived from the published 12.1 priority lists and Blizzard's own description of the spec, not from a sim. The hero-tree recommendation is where the sources diverge: most put Void-Scarred ahead in both single target and AoE after the 12.1 Mastery change, and at least one still rates Annihilator marginally ahead. Both variants are given rather than one being presented as settled.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Everything is a harvest. Consume and Soul Immolation make Soul Fragments and Fury, Reap gathers the Fragments, and the two resources feed two different spenders: Fury into Void Ray, Souls into Void Metamorphosis.
- Void Ray has no cooldown. This is the habit that breaks Havoc players: you are not saving a channel for a window, you are spending Fury as it arrives so you never sit at cap.
- Void Metamorphosis is the damage window and Collapsing Star is what it is for. Reaching 50 Souls is the whole of your resource planning; once transformed, Fury drains on its own and Collapsing Star costs Souls, so bank Fragments before you press it.
- After the 12.1 Mastery cut, the rotation between windows is worth real damage. Consume is a filler you cast while moving, so movement is not a DPS loss unless you let it become one.
Void-ScarredFaster, more frequent transformations, with a short melee combo folded into the caster loop.
Single-target priority
- 1.Void Metamorphosis - as soon as you hit 50 Souls - do not bank past it
- 2.Collapsing Star - inside the transformation, while Souls allow
- 3.Void Ray - at high Fury, and always before you would cap
- 4.Reap - when 4 or more Fragments are out, for the tier set proc
- 5.Voidblade into Hungering Slash - the Void-Scarred combo; Voidstep resets Vengeful Retreat
- 6.Soul Immolation - keep it running for the Fragment and Fury stream
- 7.Consume - filler, castable while moving
AoE priority
- 1.Void Metamorphosis - open the window on the pack, not between packs
- 2.Collapsing Star - the Cosmic payoff; position so the pack is inside it
- 3.Eradicate - when talented, this is what turns Reap into your AoE tool
- 4.Reap - on a full set of Fragments - the sweep is the AoE, not the filler
- 5.Void Ray - aim the frontal through the largest line of the pack
- 6.Soul Immolation - maintain for generation across the whole pull
- 7.Consume - filler only when nothing above is available
Opener
- 1.Soul Immolation just before the pull for a head start on Fragments and Fury
- 2.Consume to build toward the first transformation
- 3.Reap once 4 or more Fragments are out
- 4.Void Ray to spend the opening Fury
- 5.Void Metamorphosis at 50 Souls
- 6.Collapsing Star inside the window, with The Hunt for extra burst
AnnihilatorA longer ramp into a larger window, with Reap and Collapsing Star carrying the meteor payload.
Single-target priority
- 1.Void Metamorphosis - the ramp target - Haste shortens the road to it
- 2.Collapsing Star - triggers the Voidfall meteor barrage
- 3.Reap - at 3 stacks of Voidfall, or at 4 or more Fragments for the tier proc
- 4.Void Ray - the Fury dump between Reaps
- 5.Soul Immolation - keep the generation stream up
- 6.Consume - filler
AoE priority
- 1.Void Metamorphosis - hold for the pack when the pull is seconds away
- 2.Collapsing Star - meteor barrage - the reason to play this tree in keys
- 3.Reap - on a full Fragment set; Voidfall meteors follow
- 4.Void Ray - frontal through the pack
- 5.Soul Immolation - maintain
- 6.Consume - filler
Opener
- 1.Soul Immolation pre-pull
- 2.Consume and Reap to bank Fragments through the ramp
- 3.Void Ray to avoid capping Fury during the build
- 4.Void Metamorphosis, then Collapsing Star into the Voidfall barrage
Pre-combat checks
- Soul Immolation a few seconds before the pull so Fragments and Fury are already flowing.
- Check your range. Most of the kit stops at 25 yards, which is nearer than a Mage stands - find the spot that keeps the boss in Void Ray's frontal without standing in melee.
- Confirm your interrupt assignment. Disrupt is 30 yards on a 15 second cooldown and you are now a ranged player who still has one, which groups will assign accordingly.
Major cooldowns
Void Metamorphosis
- Entered by collecting 50 Soul Fragments, not by a cooldown timer, so your generation rate is your cooldown.
- Fury drains on its own while transformed - the resource to plan is Souls, since Collapsing Star spends them.
- Do not bank Souls past the threshold hoping for a better moment; a delayed transformation is a delayed window and the generation keeps running.
- On a pull with adds seconds away, holding it briefly is correct. Holding it for half a minute is not.
Collapsing Star
- The payoff inside Void Metamorphosis and the single largest hit in the kit.
- Costs Souls per cast, so arrive at the transformation with Fragments banked rather than spent.
- Under Annihilator it triggers the Voidfall meteor barrage, which is where that tree's AoE lives.
The Hunt
- A damage cooldown that also closes distance, and on Devourer it starts the Hungering Slash sequence.
- Line it with a transformation window rather than spending it to travel.
Blur and Darkness
- Blur is 25 percent damage reduction with two charges, which is a lot of uptime for a ranged spec.
- Darkness is a genuine raid cooldown you keep from the class tree. Call it for a known group-wide hit rather than saving it.
- Soul Immolation heals about 24 percent of maximum health over its duration, so on damage-pattern fights it is a defensive you were already pressing.
Advanced tips
Playing the range band
- 25 yards is the number to internalize. It is far enough to stand with the ranged group and short enough that a boss knockback can drop you out of your own rotation.
- Void Ray is a frontal, so facing matters in a way it does not for most casters. Turn before you channel, not during.
- Consume is castable while moving and is the reason mechanic-heavy fights are not a throughput disaster for this spec. Lead with it during movement rather than standing still to force a bigger cast.
Fragment economy
- Reap is the sweep, not the generator. Pressing it on one or two loose Fragments wastes the 8 second cooldown and, in Season 2, the tier set proc that wants 4 or more.
- The 12.1 four-piece raises Reap damage and feeds Soulburst back into your Fragment count, so Reap timing is now a damage decision rather than a tidying-up habit.
- Overcapping Fury is the other half. Void Ray having no cooldown means there is never a reason to sit at cap.
What Havoc players get wrong
- Void Ray is not Eye Beam. There is no cooldown to protect and no transformation attached to it.
- Void Metamorphosis is earned with resources, not pressed on a timer, so 'Meta is up' is not a thing you check.
- Your gear is not your old gear. Warglaives convert to Intellect here and every primary-stat armor piece you kept from Havoc is dead weight.
No talent import strings. Devourer's tree is in the game data and this site's talent calculator has covered it since the spec shipped, but nobody authoritative publishes import strings and one that is a single node stale imports a build that does not exist. The builds below name their key nodes instead; build them in the calculator and check the node names against the 12.1 changes above.
Talents and hero trees
Use Void-Scarred for the single-target profile below and Void-Scarred when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Void-Scarred
Void-Scarred is the Season 2 default in single target. Soul Glutton shortens the gap between transformations and Voidsurge pays you for each one. Most published guides put it ahead after the 12.1 Mastery change, though the sources are not unanimous.
- Void-Scarred hero tree
- Stat priority: Intellect > Mastery
- Interrupt: Disrupt
Multi-target: Void-Scarred
Void-Scarred is also the AoE default, which is unusual - it is recommended at every target count rather than paired against the other tree. Annihilator remains a real alternative in keys, where Reap's Voidfall meteors and the Collapsing Star barrage carry its damage.
- Void-Scarred hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
- Interrupt: Disrupt
Talent builds
Start with the profile matching your content. Boss and dungeon tabs in the gear section show the exact loadout used for each ranked result. A build with no import string has not had one exported for this patch; the key talents below are the build.
Raid and Mythic+ - Void-Scarred
The Season 2 default, and it is the default in both raid and keys rather than one of a pair. Void-Scarred shortens the gap between transformations through Soul Glutton, then pays you for entering them: Voidsurge turns each one into burst cleave you did not have to aim. It also folds the melee combo back in - Voidblade into Hungering Slash, with Voidstep resetting Vengeful Retreat - so you step in for a beat and leave, which suits Demon Hunter mobility and costs nothing when a mechanic pushes you out. Second Helping, Soulshaper, Moment of Craving and Devourer's Edge all sharpen Reap, which is the node everything else keys off. Take Eradicate when Reap needs to become an AoE tool.
Alternative - Annihilator
The tree Devourer shares with Vengeance, and the one the published guides disagree about. It ramps more slowly and pays out harder: Reap summons Voidfall meteors, and Collapsing Star triggers a meteor barrage rather than a single hit. Most Season 2 writeups now put Void-Scarred ahead in both single target and AoE after the 12.1 Mastery change, but at least one keeps Annihilator marginally in front, and the gap is small enough that it is a real choice rather than a trap. Run it if you prefer a longer ramp into a bigger window, and shift toward Haste in single target to reach the transformation sooner.
Flex - control and survivability
A swap package rather than a third archetype. Void Nova covers the caster packs Disrupt alone cannot, Darkness is a real raid cooldown that this spec keeps from the Demon Hunter class tree, and Soul Immolation is both a resource stream and a 24 percent heal, which makes it the talent you stop treating as purely offensive on damage-pattern fights. Trade class-tree throughput nodes to afford it on weeks where dying is the damage loss.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Slot rules, not a verified best-in-slot list. Neck, cloak and rings carry no primary stat, so the named picks are the same items every spec contests and they apply to Devourer unchanged. Everything that does carry a primary stat - tier, trinkets, weapons - is deliberately left as a rule, because Devourer is the newest spec in the game and no reachable source has published a verified list for it. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Note that Devourer is an Intellect spec in leather, so it contests gear with Balance and Restoration Druid rather than with Havoc and Vengeance. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for this spec needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Raid acquisition targets
Same rule as the raid list, and the same reason. The dungeon neck and rings carry no primary stat and apply directly; anything carrying Intellect is a slot rule until a verified Devourer list exists. Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for this spec needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.

Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Demon Hunter toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Defensives

/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] DisruptWritten for patch 12.1.0 from Blizzard's notes and the spec's published rotation guidance. Devourer is the newest spec in the game and the one most likely to be retuned, so treat the resource-economy advice as durable and the hero-tree framing as the part that moves first. What improves results
- Never sit at Fury cap - Void Ray has no cooldown, so capping is free damage lost
- Let 4 or more Fragments accumulate before Reap, for its own value and the tier proc
- Keep Soul Immolation up; it generates and heals 24 percent of maximum health
- Face before you channel Void Ray, and lead movement with Consume
Common mistakes
- Treating Void Ray like Eye Beam and saving it for a window
- Banking Souls past 50 instead of transforming
- Pressing Reap on one or two loose Fragments
- Wearing Agility gear carried over from Havoc
FAQ
5 quick answersIs Devourer a new class?
No. It is a third specialization for Demon Hunter, added in Midnight alongside Havoc and Vengeance. You change to it the same way you change any spec, and it uses the same character.
Why does my Havoc gear not work?
Devourer is an Intellect specialization in leather. Warglaives convert to Intellect for it, so your weapons carry over, but every armor piece that carries a primary stat wants Intellect rather than Agility. In practice you share gear with Balance and Restoration Druid, not with the other two Demon Hunter specs. Neck, cloak and rings have no primary stat, so those transfer untouched.
Is it melee or ranged?
Ranged, at a shorter band than most. The bulk of the kit caps at about 25 yards, and the Void-Scarred hero tree adds a brief melee combo you step in for. Treat it as a mid-range caster that can close when it wants to, not as a turret and not as a melee.
Void-Scarred or Annihilator?
Void-Scarred is the Season 2 default and most published guides put it ahead in both raid and Mythic+ after the 12.1 Mastery change. The sources are not unanimous - at least one still rates Annihilator marginally ahead - and the difference is small enough that either is playable. Void-Scarred cycles transformations faster; Annihilator ramps longer into a bigger payoff.
What changed in 12.1?
Mastery: Monster Within was cut significantly inside Void Metamorphosis and baseline ability damage was raised to compensate. The spec is now less dependent on being transformed, which makes the filler rotation matter and is the main reason the hero-tree recommendation moved.
