Overview

Affliction maintains Agony and Corruption or Wither, uses Dark Harvest for priority damage, and spends Soul Shards on Unstable Affliction or Seed of Corruption. Its damage peaks when shards, DoTs, trinkets, and Summon Darkglare align.

Patch 12.0.7Updated Jul 16, 2026

Strengths

  • Strong sustained, priority-target, and spread-cleave damage
  • Self-healing and utility (gateway, healthstones, curses)
  • Mobile damage with exceptional defensive and raid utility

Weaknesses

  • Damage falls off when targets die before DoTs can work
  • DoT maintenance across target swaps
  • Requires deliberate shard and cooldown planning

Stat Priority, Races & Consumables

Stat rankings, race notes, enchants, gems, and consumables in one place - the same character-prep flow players expect from modern class guides.

  1. 1.Item Level / Intellect
  2. 2.Single target: Critical Strike
  3. 3.Single target: Haste = Mastery
  4. 4.AoE: Haste = Critical Strike
  5. 5.Versatility

On sustained single target, use Crit > Haste = Mastery > Versatility. In AoE and Mythic+, Haste rises to Haste = Crit > Mastery > Versatility because it accelerates DoT application, shard generation, and Seed of Corruption casts. There are no fixed caps; diminishing returns and your current gear make sims important for close items.

Races

Race choice

Racials are a small optimization. Pick utility racials for the content you play most, then prioritize gear, talents, and execution.

Haste

Speeds up casts, attacks, and resource generation, so your whole rotation flows faster and you fit more globals into every cooldown window.

Critical Strike

Chance to land a hit for roughly double value. Bursty and RNG-driven; strongest when the spec has effects that scale with or guarantee crits.

Mastery

A spec-specific multiplier - what it amplifies changes per spec, so hover it on your character sheet. Often your best or worst stat depending on build.

Versatility

A flat increase to all damage and healing done plus reduced damage taken. The safe, consistent, survivability-friendly stat.

Consumables

Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.

Secondary-stat enchants are not universal. They should move with your current gear, stat breakpoints, and the enemies you are facing in a raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. We will split these into boss-by-boss, dungeon-by-dungeon, and PvP bracket recommendations as the live gear model fills in.

Playstyle & Rotation

This is the practical priority list: how the spec plays moment to moment, when to spend, and where cooldowns belong.

Opener

5 steps
  1. 1Apply Agony and Corruption, or Wither as Hellcaller
  2. 2Use Haunt and Dark Harvest on the priority target
  3. 3Build Soul Shards without capping
  4. 4Enter Summon Darkglare with DoTs active and shards ready
  5. 5Spend shards on Unstable Affliction, then use your filler

Major Cooldowns

4 steps
  • Summon Darkglare is the primary burst window; enter it with DoTs and shards prepared
  • Dark Harvest is a short-cooldown priority-target tool - do not hold it for no reason
  • Malevolence gives Wither stacks and Haste for Hellcaller burn windows
  • Line up two-minute on-use trinkets with Darkglare when practical

Single-target priority

5 steps
  1. 1Keep Agony and Corruption or Wither active
  2. 2Use Haunt and Dark Harvest on cooldown or for priority targets
  3. 3Spend shards on Unstable Affliction and never cap
  4. 4Drain Soul or Shadow Bolt as filler
  5. 5Use Summon Darkglare with DoTs active, saved shards, and on-use effects

AoE / multi-target priority

5 steps
  1. 1Use Seed of Corruption on stacked multi-target packs
  2. 2Maintain Agony and Corruption or Wither on long-lived spread targets
  3. 3Choose Soul Harvester for stacked keys and Hellcaller for sustained spread cleave
  4. 4Spend shards on Seed in stacked AoE; do not cap while waiting for Darkglare
  5. 5Use Summon Darkglare after the relevant DoTs are established

Talents

Pick your hero tree by the fight’s damage profile - single-target on pure bosses, multi-target on cleave and add fights.

Single-target: Soul Harvester

Soul Harvester is the current default for single target and small-target cleave, amplifying Unstable Affliction builds.

  • Soul Harvester hero tree
  • Stat priority: Item Level / Intellect > Critical Strike
  • Interrupt: Spell Lock

Multi-target: Soul Harvester

Soul Harvester is also the current default Mythic+ build. Hellcaller is a strong alternative only for sustained spread cleave where Wither can keep working.

  • Soul Harvester hero tree
  • Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
  • Interrupt: Spell Lock

Loadouts by Content

Talent focus and live gear for each type of content. Copy the picks into the talent calculator to build and share your tree - verified in-game import strings are added as they are theorycrafted, never guessed.

Soul Harvester - Single Target

The current default single-target build. It uses Xavius' Gambit, Cascading Calamity, and Fatal Echoes to amplify Unstable Affliction.

Soul Harvester - Mythic+

The recommended key build. Seeds of Destruction, Patient Zero, and Sow the Seeds turn Seed of Corruption into a reliable stacked-pack spender.

Hellcaller - Spread Cleave

Use this alternative when multiple targets live long enough for Wither and Malevolence to do real work. It is not the default stacked Mythic+ build.

Secondary-stat enchants are flexible. They change with your current gear and the enemy profile in a specific raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. As the live model fills in, this page will show enchants and gear by boss, dungeon, and PvP bracket.

Equipment

Tier set notes, target gear, trinkets, embellishments, and boss-specific gear links.

Treat secondary-stat enchants as matchup-aware recommendations, not permanent rules. Your current gear, raid boss damage profile, dungeon pulls, and arena or Blitz enemies can change whether Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility, avoidance, leech, or movement is the right enchant for that slot.

Gearing notes

Gear rule

Use the BiS tables as a target list, then prefer item level and the secondary stats shown in this guide.

Raid Encounter Gear

Retrieving verified gear from the current top parses. This refreshes automatically.

Mythic+ Dungeon Gear

Loading the verified live dungeon references.

Enchants

Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.

Gems

Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.

Embellishments

Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.

Best in Slot by Boss

Gear and talents change per fight. For each boss we surface the current #1 parse as the best-in-slot reference - open any boss to copy that player’s full gear from Warcraft Logs. The recommended hero tree follows the fight’s damage profile.

Utility & Defensives

The Warlock toolkit, shared across every spec - a few entries are talent choices. Landing these on cue is what separates a good Affliction from a great one.

Raid-wide Healthstones and a combat-rez Soulstone are unique Warlock utility.

Interrupt: Spell Lock - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Affliction macros page.

Interface & Macros

Start with Midnight’s built-in boss warnings, cooldown manager, damage meter, and raid frames. Then add only the interface pieces that make your decisions clearer.

Better Blizzplates - cleaner, threat-colored nameplates with cast bars and cooldown text - the nameplate upgrade nearly every top player runs.
OmniCD - party and enemy defensive/utility cooldown tracking - the biggest information edge the base UI still does not show.
Mythic Dungeon Tools - build and follow pull-by-pull Mythic+ routes.
Details! (optional) - deep damage/healing breakdowns and Warcraft Logs uploads beyond Midnight's built-in meter.
Hekili - optional priority helper - great for learning a new spec's rotation.

Tips & Tricks

  • Maintain Agony and Corruption or Wither on targets that will live long enough
  • Build shards before Darkglare, then spend aggressively during the window
  • Use Seed of Corruption for stacked multi-target; use Unstable Affliction for single target
  • Save a few shards before Malevolence, then spend to keep Wither's burn phase active

Common Mistakes

  • Using Malefic Rapture or Soul Rot - they are not part of the current Midnight core loop
  • Casting Darkglare without DoTs or shards prepared
  • Capping Soul Shards while waiting too long for a perfect cooldown window
  • Trying to full-DoT targets that will die before the investment pays off

FAQ

2 quick answers

Which hero tree should I play?

Soul Harvester is the current default for both single target and Mythic+. Choose Hellcaller only when sustained spread cleave lets Wither and Malevolence gain real value.

Which race is best?

Racial damage differences are small. Mag'har Orc and Mechagnome are the highest-simming choices in their factions, while Dwarf and Dark Iron Dwarf bring Stoneform for difficult debuffs. Choose a race for utility unless you are optimizing the final fraction of a percent.

Arena Talent Planning

Talents by enemy class

Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. Named picks appear only in reviewed matchup plans; the baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.

Their pressure

Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.

Talent focus

Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.

Game plan

Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.

No reviewed PvP baseline is published for this spec yet. Use the live tree to apply the matchup focus above rather than treating a PvE build as an arena answer.
