Patch 12.0.7Updated Aug 2, 2026

Strong when

  • Enormous burst windows
  • Strong single-target
  • Great control and stealth utility

Plan around

  • Highest rogue complexity
  • Shadow Dance window management
  • Weak outside cooldown windows
Character setup

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Item Level / Agility
  2. 2.Mastery
  3. 3.Haste to hero-tree target
  4. 4.Critical Strike
  5. 5.Versatility

Trickster single target and AoE target roughly 700 raw Haste; Deathstalker single target targets about 1050 raw Haste. After that, Mastery is the dominant secondary because it increases finisher damage. Sim close gear and gems.

Combat

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Resource economy: Energy and Combo Point income is low outside of cooldowns and high during them. Shadow Techniques drives a big part of that income, so stay within auto-attack range in both single target and AoE - the pacing outside of cooldowns is meant to feel slow.
  • Cooldown management: the vast majority of damage is bound to cooldowns, and everything aligns to Secret Technique - only use Shadow Dance when Secret Technique is ready, pair Shadow Blades with Shadow Dance, use a second Dance right after the first ends, and delay Secret Technique and Shadow Dance slightly when Shadow Blades is about to come off cooldown.
  • Global cooldown efficiency: never cast Shadow Dance during a global cooldown and use your first ability as soon as possible after it - Deepening Shadows can extend Shadow Dance just enough to fit another spell, and a macro that combines the cooldown with a builder or spender protects that.
DeathstalkerAhead on pure single target with roughly 1100 Haste; prefers starting Shadow Dance with low Combo Points and plays around Darkest Night Eviscerates.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Shadowstrike - from Stealth on the pull or after a restealth
  2. 2.Secret Technique - during Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points
  3. 3.Eviscerate - during Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points when Secret Technique is down
  4. 4.Shadowstrike - during Shadow Dance - Combo Point builder
  5. 5.Eviscerate - outside Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points
  6. 6.Backstab - outside Shadow Dance - Combo Point builder
  7. 7.Shadow Dance - with low Combo Points, when Secret Technique is ready or during Shadow Blades
  8. 8.Shadow Blades - if you have Shadow Dance ready
  9. 9.Vanish - on cooldown with low Combo Points

AoE priority

  1. 1.Shadowstrike - from Stealth on the pull or after a restealth
  2. 2.Secret Technique - during Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points
  3. 3.Eviscerate - during Shadow Dance - with Darkest Night
  4. 4.Black Powder - during Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points
  5. 5.Shadowstrike - during Shadow Dance - builder with 3 or fewer targets or if Deathstalker's Mark is not up
  6. 6.Shuriken Storm - during Shadow Dance - builder
  7. 7.Eviscerate - outside Shadow Dance - with Darkest Night
  8. 8.Black Powder - outside Shadow Dance - finisher at 6 or more Combo Points
  9. 9.Shuriken Storm - outside Shadow Dance - builder
  10. 10.Shadow Dance - with low Combo Points, when Secret Technique is ready or during Shadow Blades
  11. 11.Shadow Blades - if you have Shadow Dance ready
  12. 12.Vanish - on cooldown with low Combo Points

Opener

  1. 1.Make sure to be in Stealth before the pull.
  2. 2.Start the fight with Shadowstrike.

  5. 5.Cast Shadow Dance, then Shadow Blades.
  6. 6.Use your combat potion (Light's Potential).
  7. 7.Cast Shuriken Storm, then Secret Technique.
  8. 8.Repeat Shadowstrike and Eviscerate for the rest of Shadow Dance, then continue with the normal rotation.
TricksterThe pick for multi-target fights, Mythic+, and solo content; prefers starting Shadow Dance with finishing Combo Points and plays around Coup de Grace.

  11. 11.Shadow Blades - if you have Shadow Dance ready
  12. 12.Vanish - on cooldown with low Combo Points

Opener

  1. 1.Make sure to be in Stealth before the pull.
  2. 2.Start the fight with Shadowstrike.
  3. 3.Use your trinket (Light Company Guidon single target, Algeth'ar Puzzle Box multi-target).
  4. 4.Cast Shadow Dance, then Shadow Blades.
  5. 5.Use your combat potion (Light's Potential).
  6. 6.Cast Secret Technique.
  7. 7.Repeat Shadowstrike and Eviscerate for the rest of Shadow Dance - in multi-target, repeat Shuriken Storm and Black Powder, casting Eviscerate instead of Black Powder with Coup de Grace.
  8. 8.Continue with your normal rotation.

Pre-combat checks

  • Always start combat from Stealth.
  • Apply poisons: Instant Poison as your lethal poison and Atrophic Poison as your utility poison. Wound Poison covers Mythic+ zones full of self-healing mobs, Numbing Poison is worth it with a second rogue in the raid or against heavy-caster dungeons, and Crippling Poison is usually not used.
  • Apply Thalassian Phoenix Oil to both weapons for Mythic+ and raids.
  • Eat buff food and drink flasks if the buffs are about to run out.
  • Optional: prepare Supercharger charges - the first two charges do not reset on encounter or dungeon start, so use Shadow Dance before a pull or key start.

Major cooldowns

Secret Technique

  • A finishing move split into three parts and the only Subtlety cooldown with a static (Haste-reduced) cooldown.
  • The initial hit is physical; the second and third hits are shadow damage Clone Attacks - talents interacting with Shadow Clones, such as Replicating Shadows, typically work with them, and they land 1 and 1.2 seconds after the first hit.
  • The spell is soft target-capped at 5 targets.
  • The clone attacks count as pet attacks, and combat logs recorded from 100+ yards away misattribute them - log the fight yourself if it matters.
  • Optimal use: during Shadow Dance, as soon as possible.

Shadow Dance

  • The defining cooldown: it enables Stealth-specific spells for its duration, cannot be used while in Stealth or while it is already up, and applies a negative aggro modifier.
  • Deepening Shadows extends it based on your baseline Haste - flat Haste from on-use trinkets and The First Dance count, percentage effects like Bloodlust do not.
  • Use it with either very low Combo Points (Deathstalker) or finishing Combo Points (Trickster), and only when Secret Technique is ready.
  • Use it a second time during Shadow Blades without Secret Technique ready, but not when Shadow Blades has less than 10 seconds remaining - you want two casts inside it.
  • With the tier 4-piece and Light Company Guidon, delay the second Dance until Shadow Blades has 8 seconds of duration left.

Shadow Blades

  • A 90-second cooldown that doubles the Combo Point generation of your builders and echoes 20% of damage dealt during it as shadow damage.
  • Its cooldown resets between encounters.
  • Use it together with Shadow Dance.

Advanced tips

The haste problem and macros

  • Deepening Shadows can add very little time at low Haste, so every spell inside Shadow Dance must go out as fast as possible.
  • As Trickster, macro Secret Technique into Shadow Dance; as Deathstalker, macro Shuriken Storm into Shadow Dance; and never press Shadow Dance during a global cooldown.
  • Coup de Grace is still buggy and causes a 1.2-second global cooldown - macroing Secret Technique to it starts your first cast immediately.

Apex talents and Ancient Arts

  • You can stop using finishing moves a few seconds before Secret Technique comes off cooldown.
  • Both hero trees optimize around Ancient Arts during Shadow Dance: use Shadowstrike on high Combo Points to activate the effect if it is not up.
  • As Trickster, have your supercharged Eviscerate or Black Powder empowered by Ancient Arts; as Deathstalker, always try to get Ancient Arts for the Darkest Night Eviscerate, which hits up to 4 targets during Shadow Dance.
  • Deathstalker's Mark can disappear on multi-phase encounters, bosses with immunities, or target switches - this requires more attention and the use of Mark for Death to fix.

FAQ

3 quick answers

Which races are best?

Race differences are small. Pandaren is a strong Mythic+ damage option, while Dwarf provides valuable Stoneform utility; choose the race whose utility helps the content you play.

Where do Shadow Dance windows go in the Midnight raid?

On steady single target - Imperator Averzian, Fallen-King Salhadaar - use them on cooldown with Shadow Blades. On Crown of the Cosmos, Rotmire, and Belo'ren, hold a window a few seconds for priority adds and Ember eggs: on-demand burst into a 15-second egg is what Subtlety is for. On Midnight Falls, plan the cycle so a final full window lands before the soft enrage.

How do I play Chimaerus' movement phases?

Never open Shadow Blades and Shadow Dance into a forced movement phase - the window is short and every wasted global in it is expensive. Burst between transitions, use Shadowstep to hold uptime, and save Vanish for a window you can actually fill.
