  • Complex DoT maintenance

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Item Level / Agility
  2. 2.Critical Strike
  3. 3.Haste
  4. 4.Mastery
  5. 5.Versatility

Critical Strike feeds Seal Fate Combo Points and Dashing Scoundrel Energy; Haste improves regeneration and DoT rate. Treat close pieces as character-specific rather than following a fixed item-level rule.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Prepare for AoE: your AoE is enabled through Caustic Spatter and Crimson Tempest, and Crimson Tempest is a very expensive Energy button - know when AoE is coming in an encounter so you can plan your cooldowns, bleeds, and resources around it.
  • Manage Envenom uptime: Implacable enables a pooling playstyle that requires you to drop the Envenom buff at regular intervals to get Energy back. Managing this without overcapping resources is the key to success.
  • Be Energy efficient: Assassination is not locked by the global cooldown but by Energy, so think about which button is most efficient right now rather than forcing a cast every time one is possible.
DeathstalkerAdds Darkest Night Envenoms, but Deathstalker's Mark makes target swapping awkward - Darkest Night is the only way to move the Mark in Midnight.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Garrote - maintain
  2. 2.Mutilate - until you have 5 or more Combo Points
  3. 3.Envenom - at maximum Combo Points when Darkest Night is active
  4. 4.Rupture - maintain by casting at 5 or more Combo Points
  5. 5.Vanish into Garrote - to apply Improved Garrote - line this up with Deathmark in most situations
  6. 6.Deathmark - on cooldown
  7. 7.Kingsbane - on cooldown, immediately after Deathmark when applicable
  8. 8.Envenom - at 5 or more Combo Points, unless at 80 stacks of Implacable

AoE priority

  1. 1.Garrote - maintain on your main target
  2. 2.Rupture - maintain by casting at 5 or more Combo Points on your main target
  3. 3.Crimson Tempest - to spread bleeds to secondary targets, until you have 5 or more Combo Points
  4. 4.Fan of Knives - on 2 or more targets, until you have 5 or more Combo Points
  5. 5.Vanish into Garrote - for Improved Garrote - in Mythic+ commonly held for chain pulls where you cannot stealth beforehand; otherwise sync with Deathmark
  6. 6.Deathmark - on cooldown
  7. 7.Kingsbane - on cooldown, immediately after Deathmark when applicable
  8. 8.Envenom - at 5 or more Combo Points to avoid wasting Energy and Combo Points

Opener

  1. 1.From Stealth, cast Garrote.
  2. 2.Mutilate until 5 or more Combo Points, then Rupture.
  3. 3.Garrote again to extend Improved Garrote.
  4. 4.Mutilate until 5 or more Combo Points, then Envenom before entering your cooldowns.
  5. 5.Use on-use trinkets, racials, and consumables now - Algeth'ar Puzzle Box cannot be macroed because it is a channel.
  6. 6.Cast Deathmark, then Kingsbane.
  7. 7.Envenom to dump Combo Points, then continue the normal priority.
FateboundMuch more relaxed - no special min-maxing to get its damage out, and often better single-target and priority damage outside of large AoE.

Pre-combat checks

  • Apply weapon poisons: always run Deadly Poison, and additionally apply Amplifying Poison when talented into it.
  • Eat food and check your flask before the pull.
  • Open from Stealth so the first Garrote is an Improved Garrote.

Major cooldowns

Deathmark

  • A single-target debuff on a 2-minute cooldown. Cast it on cooldown and align all other cooldowns to it - its interactions dictate your burst.
  • It applies a bleed, restores Energy, doubles the damage of Garrote, Rupture, and Lethal Poisons (Deadly and Amplifying Poison), and applies each Lethal Poison twice.
  • The doubled Garrote damage includes the empowered Improved Garrote from stealth, and the doubled poison applications make the ramping Kingsbane hit significantly harder.
  • Talents such as Finish the Job and Lethal Dose interact with it passively, which makes Deathmark worth casting in AoE as well as single target.

Kingsbane

  • A single-target debuff on a 1-minute cooldown. Cast it on cooldown, aligned to Deathmark, because it ramps faster inside the window.
  • It is a two-part attack: an instant hit that generates a Combo Point, then a 14-second damage-over-time effect that grows with every poison application during it.
  • Deathmark's duplicated poison applications greatly speed up the ramp on Kingsbane's DoT.

Vanish

  • A 2-minute cooldown that exists to enable Improved Garrote - the only remaining Stealth interaction for Assassination in Midnight.
  • In single target, treat it as an extension of Deathmark: Deathmark doubles Garrote damage, so having Improved Garrote up for that window is ideal burst.
  • In Mythic+, treat it as a way to get a restealth on chain pulls where you could not stealth beforehand.
  • Crimson Tempest spreads Improved Garrote to multiple targets without manually casting Garrote on each one.

Advanced tips

Pooling and Implacable

  • Pooling is worth around 1.5% and only materializes through Implacable, the new Apex talent.
  • Implacable stacks with each Envenom cast (20% / 35% / 50% / 65% / 80%) and grants a burst of Energy regeneration when the Envenom buff times out; the buff shows the current percentage as a stack counter.
  • At 80 stacks, force yourself to let Envenom expire - as long as you will not overcap Energy in the process. This matters most in single target and in low-target AoE.

Darkest Night and Shiv (Deathstalker)

  • Shiv no longer applies a debuff and is not rotational, but it lives on in Deathstalker builds.
  • The Darkest Night buff is so large that you always cast Envenom at maximum Combo Points while it is up.
  • Toxic Stiletto reduces Shiv's Energy cost so heavily that Shiv becomes the correct filler when you are exactly 1 Combo Point from maximum - a Mutilate would cost more and waste Combo Points.
  • Deathstalker's Mark can disappear on multi-phase bosses or immunities; Mark for Death is the fix, and on swap-heavy fights you may need to hold an Envenom to use the hero tree effectively.

AoE opener and Scent of Blood

  • The Mythic+ opener is: Vanish if you did not get to stealth, Garrote, Garrote again to extend Improved Garrote, Fan of Knives for Combo Points, Rupture at 5 or more, on-use trinkets, Deathmark, Kingsbane, Envenom, then Crimson Tempest until all targets bleed, Fan of Knives to build, Envenom.
  • Scent of Blood can be stacked before cooldowns: spread bleeds with Crimson Tempest first, then go into Puzzle Box and cooldowns - but only when the pack will live through the full Deathmark. If it would die early, skip the spread and send cooldowns immediately.

FAQ

4 quick answers

Which races are best?

Race damage is close. Mag'har Orc is a strong Horde option for Deathmark burst, while Night Elf provides valuable Shadowmeld utility for Alliance Mythic+ play.

When do I use Vanish?

Use Vanish into Improved Garrote, ideally alongside Deathmark. Do not hold it so long that you lose a meaningful Garrote reset.

How should I plan Deathmark and Kingsbane across the Midnight raid?

Send them on cooldown on steady single-target fights like Imperator Averzian and Fallen-King Salhadaar. On Crown of the Cosmos and Rotmire, hold them a few seconds if a burn phase or priority add swap is imminent. On Belo'ren, bank both for the Stage 2 boss egg - the Rebirth damage check decides the pull.

When is Crimson Tempest worth it on raid add waves?

Lightblinded Vanguard's waves stack and must be AoE'd down, so Fan of Knives plus Crimson Tempest earns its target count there. On Vorasius, skip it: Blistercreeps only count when they die touching their crystal wall, and AoE that kills one in open floor wastes the wall break.

Their pressure

Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.

Talent focus

Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.

Game plan

Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.

No reviewed PvP baseline is published for this spec yet. Use the live tree to apply the matchup focus above rather than treating a PvE build as an arena answer.
