How Protection Paladin wins
Protection is a fast Holy Power tank that maintains Shield of the Righteous, controls casts with Avenger's Shield and Rebuke, and converts short cooldowns into mitigation, damage, and group utility. Lightsmith is the Mythic+ default while Templar leads single-target raid damage.
- Role

- Cleave / AoE
- Lightsmith
Strong when
- Strong AoE threat and damage
- Excellent utility (Blessings, auras)
- Good magic and physical mitigation
Plan around
- Resource mistakes directly reduce active mitigation
- Limited mobility outside Divine Steed and Freedom
- Divine Toll only controls up to five targets
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Item Level
- 2.Haste
- 3.Critical Strike
- 4.Mastery / Versatility
Item level is the dominant early gearing rule because Strength, Stamina, and Armor matter so much. For similar item levels, Haste > Critical Strike > Mastery = Versatility is the balanced default. Sim when optimizing offense.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Generate and spend resources: the rotation is simply build Holy Power, spend Holy Power. Judgment and Blessed Hammer steadily build it for Shield of the Righteous and Word of Glory, with Avenger's Shield and Consecration filling the remaining globals.
- Never overcap Holy Power: never sit at the Holy Power cap - make sure you are constantly spending it.
- Plan your defensives: Protection Paladin can feel quite squishy if you are not actively cycling defensive cooldowns during high damage-intake periods.
TemplarThe single-target raid default. Tank AoE is built into the normal kit, so the AoE priority is identical to single target.
Single-target priority
- 1.Avenging Wrath - on cooldown
- 2.Judgment - on cooldown
- 3.Shield of the Righteous - at 3-5 Holy Power or when free - try not to cap Holy Power
- 4.Avenger's Shield - on cooldown
- 5.Divine Toll - at 0 Holy Power - use it close to on cooldown as much as possible
- 6.Blessed Hammer / Hammer of the Righteous - on cooldown
- 7.Word of Glory - below 50% health, or to top off before a dangerous hit
- 8.Consecration - as filler
AoE priority
- 1.Same list as single target - prot's AoE is built into the normal kit, so the rotation does not change on AoE
- 2.Avenging Wrath - on cooldown
- 3.Judgment - on cooldown
- 4.Shield of the Righteous - at 3-5 Holy Power or when free
- 5.Avenger's Shield - on cooldown
- 6.Divine Toll - at 0 Holy Power
- 7.Blessed Hammer / Hammer of the Righteous - on cooldown
- 8.Word of Glory - below 50% health
- 9.Consecration - as filler
Opener
- 1.Consecration pre-pull, as close to the boss as you can safely get without pulling.
- 2.Blessed Hammer pre-pull to bank a few Holy Power.
- 3.Hand of Reckoning on pull so no DPS or healers get punched.
- 4.Ardent Defender if you are tanking first.
- 5.Avenger's Shield.
- 6.Avenging Wrath.
- 7.Divine Toll + Hammer of Light.
- 8.Proceed with the normal rotation.
LightsmithThe Mythic+ default. Sacred Weapon and Holy Bulwark join the priority, and Judgment drops below Avenger's Shield.
Single-target priority
- 1.Avenging Wrath - on cooldown
- 2.Sacred Weapon - if you are not inside Avenging Wrath

- 5.Judgment - on cooldown
- 6.Divine Toll - at 0 Holy Power - use it close to on cooldown as much as possible
- 7.Holy Bulwark - if you have any charges
- 8.Blessed Hammer / Hammer of the Righteous - on cooldown
- 9.Word of Glory - below 50% health, or to top off before a dangerous hit
- 10.Consecration - as filler

Pre-combat checks
- Make sure you have the most useful aura on.
- Check your gear is repaired.
- Consume food, flask, and weapon oil.
Major cooldowns
Avenging Wrath
- An enjoyable and commonly active cooldown - it sits at the top of the priority list.
- It changes Judgment into Hammer of Wrath and increases your damage, healing, and crit chance.
Guardian of Ancient Kings
- A 50% damage reduction on a fairly long cooldown - your biggest damage-reduction cooldown.
- Reserve it for genuinely dangerous periods in a pull or encounter.
Divine Shield
- Your get-out-of-jail-free card: immunity to damage and most debuffs for a short duration.
Advanced tips
Always be casting
- GCD usage is extremely important. Missing 10-20% of your total casts because you are not mashing fast enough loses significant damage and Holy Power generation - and that feeds itself: fewer resources, less cooldown reduction, less damage when you need it.
- Casts do not have to be perfect every time; just make sure you are actually hitting something instead of mashing buttons that are not ready yet.
Talents and hero trees
Use Templar for the single-target profile below and Lightsmith when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Templar
Templar is the current raid default. Divine Toll activates Hammer of Light; use the procs within 20 seconds and maintain Shake the Heavens without wasting its pandemic extension.
- Templar hero tree
- Stat priority: Item Level > Haste
- Interrupt: Rebuke
Multi-target: Lightsmith
Lightsmith is the current Mythic+ default. Use Sacred Weapon outside Avenging Wrath and spend Holy Bulwark charges whenever they are available.
- Lightsmith hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
- Interrupt: Rebuke
Verified import strings
Start with the profile matching your content. Boss and dungeon tabs in the gear section show the exact loadout used for each ranked result.
Mythic+ - Lightsmith
Current Lightsmith Mythic+ default. Sentinel is preferred in punishing keys; swap class-tree utility to match dispels, magic damage, roots, and required Blessings.

Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Paladin toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Utility & CC
Movement
External saves - Blessing of Protection, Sacrifice, and Lay on Hands - define Paladin raid value.
Interrupt: Rebuke - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Protection macros page.
Interface and macros
Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.
Focus interrupt
#showtooltip Rebuke
/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] RebukeWhat improves results
- Protect Shield of the Righteous uptime first; it is your active mitigation and default Holy Power spend
- Use free Shining Light Word of Glory for routine self-healing and save ordinary Holy Power for Shield of the Righteous
- Avenger's Shield is a priority interrupt tool, but Divine Toll cannot stop every caster in a pull larger than five
- Consecration helps if you have Sanctuary but is less important than Shield of the Righteous in Midnight
Common mistakes
- Letting Shield of the Righteous drop for low-value damage
- Wasting Templar Hammer of Light or Lightsmith Sacred Weapon timing
- Capping Holy Power
- Casting ordinary Word of Glory instead of preserving Holy Power for mitigation
FAQ
4 quick answersWhich Protection Paladin hero tree should I use?
Lightsmith is the Mythic+ default, while Templar has the Season 1 single-target edge in raid. You can use the other tree when encounter needs or preference make it a better fit.
What is Protection Paladin's stat priority?
Prioritize item level first. At similar item levels use Haste > Critical Strike > Mastery = Versatility as a balanced baseline, then sim for offense and choose survivability for the encounter.
When should I use Shield of the Righteous?
Spend at 5 Holy Power with Instrument of the Divine, prevent Holy Power capping, and use Divine Purpose procs. Keeping its mitigation active matters more than holding for a perfect damage global.
Which race is best?
Race is mostly preference, but Dwarf and Dark Iron Dwarf are popular in competitive content because Stoneform and Fireblood can remove dangerous debuffs.
