Build a practical Frost Mage setup

Use this guide for decisions in combat, then keep the chosen talents, keybinds, macros, and live gear evidence connected in the tools below.

Overview

Frost Mage is a control-heavy caster built around Freezing stacks, Shatter, Brain Freeze, Fingers of Frost, Glacial Spike, Frozen Orb, and Ray of Frost. Spellslinger is the recommended Midnight default because Frost Splinters, Infused Splinters, Polished Focus, and Spellfrost Teachings create frequent Freezing-stack windows and extra Frozen Orb uptime.

Patch 12.0.7Updated Jul 16, 2026

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Requires clean Brain Freeze, Fingers of Frost, and Freezing-stack decisions
  • Ray of Frost is a major cooldown but is not always pressed before higher-priority Frozen Orb / Glacial Spike / proc spends
  • Spellslinger and Frostfire use different Ice Lance Freezing-stack thresholds, so mixing rules costs damage

Stat Priority, Races & Consumables

Stat rankings, race notes, enchants, gems, and consumables in one place - the same character-prep flow players expect from modern class guides.

  1. 1.Intellect
  2. 2.Mastery
  3. 3.Critical Strike
  4. 4.Haste
  5. 5.Versatility

Intellect is the primary stat. Mastery and Critical Strike are the main Frost secondaries in Midnight, with Mastery improving frozen/Shatter damage and Critical Strike increasing overall crit chance. Haste smooths casts and globals. Versatility is usually last for pure throughput, though PvP and dangerous keys can raise its defensive value.

Races

Race choice

Racials are a small optimization. Pick utility racials for the content you play most, then prioritize gear, talents, and execution.

Haste

Speeds up casts, attacks, and resource generation, so your whole rotation flows faster and you fit more globals into every cooldown window.

Critical Strike

Chance to land a hit for roughly double value. Bursty and RNG-driven; strongest when the spec has effects that scale with or guarantee crits.

Mastery

A spec-specific multiplier - what it amplifies changes per spec, so hover it on your character sheet. Often your best or worst stat depending on build.

Versatility

A flat increase to all damage and healing done plus reduced damage taken. The safe, consistent, survivability-friendly stat.

Consumables

Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.

Secondary-stat enchants are not universal. They should move with your current gear, stat breakpoints, and the enemies you are facing in a raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. We will split these into boss-by-boss, dungeon-by-dungeon, and PvP bracket recommendations as the live gear model fills in.

Playstyle & Rotation

This is the practical priority list: how the spec plays moment to moment, when to spend, and where cooldowns belong.

Opener

4 steps
  1. 1Precast Frostbolt, or Frostfire Bolt when playing Frostfire
  2. 2Use combat potion and on-use trinkets
  3. 3Ray of Frost to begin the Freezing-stack engine
  4. 4Follow the Spellslinger or Frostfire priority instead of forcing an old Icy Veins / Comet Storm sequence

Major Cooldowns

4 steps

Single-target priority

5 steps
  1. 1Spellslinger: Flurry when Brain Freeze is up and Thermal Void is down
  2. 2Ice Lance at 2 Fingers of Frost, or when the target has 6+ Freezing stacks as Spellslinger
  3. 3Use Frozen Orb and Glacial Spike close to cooldown; Glacial Spike replaces Frostbolt when Icicles are ready
  4. 4Flurry after higher-priority spends, then Ray of Frost as a Freezing builder, then Frostbolt filler
  5. 5Frostfire: Comet Storm first, Flurry if Thermal Void is down, then Frozen Orb, Glacial Spike, Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost or 10+ Freezing stacks, Ray of Frost, Frostfire Bolt

AoE / multi-target priority

4 steps
  1. 1Spellslinger: Blizzard when Freezing Rain is up, then Flurry with Brain Freeze if Thermal Void is down
  2. 2Spend Ice Lance at 2 Fingers of Frost or 6+ Freezing stacks, then Frozen Orb and Glacial Spike
  3. 3Frostfire: Comet Storm when the pack is stacked, then Flurry, Frozen Orb, Glacial Spike, Blizzard, Ice Lance at Fingers of Frost or 10+ Freezing stacks
  4. 4Ray of Frost is still pressed, but after the higher-value AoE/proc globals

Talents

Pick your hero tree by the fight’s damage profile - single-target on pure bosses, multi-target on cleave and add fights.

Single-target: Spellslinger

Spellslinger is the recommended default for raid single-target and cleave. Watch Frozen Orb cooldown, Frost Splinters, Infused Splinters, and 6+ Freezing-stack Ice Lance spends.

  • Spellslinger hero tree
  • Stat priority: Intellect > Mastery
  • Interrupt: Counterspell

Multi-target: Spellslinger

Spellslinger is also the default Mythic+ build. Frostfire remains playable for single-target or stacked Comet Storm value, but it uses the 10+ Freezing-stack Ice Lance rule.

  • Spellslinger hero tree
  • Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
  • Interrupt: Counterspell

Loadouts by Content

Talent focus and live gear for each type of content. Copy the picks into the talent calculator to build and share your tree - verified in-game import strings are added as they are theorycrafted, never guessed.

Spellslinger Raid

Recommended raid default. Frost Splinters, Infused Splinters, Polished Focus, and Spellfrost Teachings keep Frozen Orb and Ice Lance Freezing-stack decisions central.

Spellslinger Mythic+

Recommended dungeon build. Keeps the Spellslinger engine while supporting Blizzard / Freezing Rain and repeated Frozen Orb value in routed pulls.

Frostfire Raid Single-Target

Playable single-target Frostfire setup. Use this only when the encounter and your sims support Frostfire; it prioritizes Comet Storm and uses the 10+ Freezing-stack Ice Lance rule.

Frostfire Mythic+

Stacked AoE Frostfire setup. Comet Storm value is higher, but it still needs clean Flurry, Frozen Orb, Glacial Spike, Blizzard, and Ice Lance threshold play.

Secondary-stat enchants are flexible. They change with your current gear and the enemy profile in a specific raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. As the live model fills in, this page will show enchants and gear by boss, dungeon, and PvP bracket.

Equipment

Tier set notes, target gear, trinkets, embellishments, and boss-specific gear links.

Treat secondary-stat enchants as matchup-aware recommendations, not permanent rules. Your current gear, raid boss damage profile, dungeon pulls, and arena or Blitz enemies can change whether Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility, avoidance, leech, or movement is the right enchant for that slot.

Gearing notes

Gear rule

Use the BiS tables as a target list, then prefer item level and the secondary stats shown in this guide.

Raid Encounter Gear

Retrieving verified gear from the current top parses. This refreshes automatically.

Mythic+ Dungeon Gear

Loading the verified live dungeon references.

Enchants

Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.

Gems

Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.

Embellishments

Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.

Best in Slot by Boss

Gear and talents change per fight. For each boss we surface the current #1 parse as the best-in-slot reference - open any boss to copy that player’s full gear from Warcraft Logs. The recommended hero tree follows the fight’s damage profile.

Utility & Defensives

The Mage toolkit, shared across every spec - a few entries are talent choices. Landing these on cue is what separates a good Frost from a great one.

Time Warp is a solo Bloodlust; Ice Block is a full immunity that also clears a lethal cast.

Interrupt: Counterspell - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Frost macros page.

Interface & Macros

Start with Midnight’s built-in boss warnings, cooldown manager, damage meter, and raid frames. Then add only the interface pieces that make your decisions clearer.

Better Blizzplates - cleaner, threat-colored nameplates with cast bars and cooldown text - the nameplate upgrade nearly every top player runs.
OmniCD - party and enemy defensive/utility cooldown tracking - the biggest information edge the base UI still does not show.
Mythic Dungeon Tools - build and follow pull-by-pull Mythic+ routes.
Details! (optional) - deep damage/healing breakdowns and Warcraft Logs uploads beyond Midnight's built-in meter.
Hekili - optional priority helper - great for learning a new spec's rotation.

Tips & Tricks

  • Do not use an outdated Winter's Chill-only priority. Midnight Frost is about Freezing stacks, Brain Freeze, Fingers of Frost, Frozen Orb, Glacial Spike, Ray of Frost, and hero-tree thresholds.
  • Spellslinger spends Ice Lance at 6+ Freezing stacks because Polished Focus changes how many stacks Ice Lance shatters.
  • Frostfire spends Ice Lance at 10+ Freezing stacks and puts Comet Storm much higher in the priority.
  • Glacial Spike is no longer a separate keybind requirement in the same way: Icicles build passively and Frostbolt upgrades into Glacial Spike when ready.
  • Use Blizzard when Freezing Rain is active in AoE, but do not drop Frozen Orb or Glacial Spike value to spam it blindly.
  • Use Alter Time before the hit, Shimmer before movement ruins a cast, and Ice Block / Ice Cold before lethal damage.
  • Polymorph breaks on any damage - keep your DoTs, pet, and AoE off a sheeped target or it pops instantly, and re-cast just before it fades to hold a target

Common Mistakes

Arena Talent Planning

Talents by enemy class

Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. Named picks appear only in reviewed matchup plans; the baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.

Open full matchup guide
Their pressure

Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.

Talent focus

Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.

Game plan

Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.

No reviewed PvP baseline is published for this spec yet. Use the live tree to apply the matchup focus above rather than treating a PvE build as an arena answer.
