Build a practical Arcane Mage setup
Use this guide for decisions in combat, then keep the chosen talents, keybinds, macros, and live gear evidence connected in the tools below.
Overview
Arcane is a cooldown-and-resource caster built around Arcane Surge, Touch of the Magi, Arcane Barrage, Arcane Salvo stacks, Clearcasting, and Arcane Charges. Spellslinger is the default Midnight profile, using Arcane Orb and Arcane Splinters to build 20-stack Barrages.
Strengths
- Very high burst through Arcane Surge and Touch of the Magi
- Strong priority damage when Arcane Barrage is prepared correctly
- Excellent defensive kit: Prismatic Barrier, Alter Time, Ice Cold/Ice Block, Mirror Image, Greater Invisibility
- Strong Mage utility through Arcane Intellect, Time Warp, Spellsteal, Remove Curse, slows, roots, and Polymorph
Weaknesses
- Punishing if Arcane Salvo, Arcane Charges, mana, or cooldown timing are mismanaged
- Movement during Arcane Surge / Touch windows costs real damage
- Spellslinger and Sunfury have different Barrage rules, so build confusion is expensive
Stat Priority, Races & Consumables
Stat rankings, race notes, enchants, gems, and consumables in one place - the same character-prep flow players expect from modern class guides.
- 1.Intellect
- 2.Mastery
- 3.Haste
- 4.Critical Strike
- 5.Versatility
Intellect is your primary stat. Mastery is the best secondary because it increases maximum mana, mana regeneration, and Arcane spell damage. Haste smooths casts and GCDs. Critical Strike and Versatility usually trail, but exact weights can move with trinkets, crafted gear, and the hero tree.
Races
Racials are a small optimization. Pick utility racials for the content you play most, then prioritize gear, talents, and execution.
Speeds up casts, attacks, and resource generation, so your whole rotation flows faster and you fit more globals into every cooldown window.
Chance to land a hit for roughly double value. Bursty and RNG-driven; strongest when the spec has effects that scale with or guarantee crits.
A spec-specific multiplier - what it amplifies changes per spec, so hover it on your character sheet. Often your best or worst stat depending on build.
A flat increase to all damage and healing done plus reduced damage taken. The safe, consistent, survivability-friendly stat.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Secondary-stat enchants are not universal. They should move with your current gear, stat breakpoints, and the enemies you are facing in a raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. We will split these into boss-by-boss, dungeon-by-dungeon, and PvP bracket recommendations as the live gear model fills in.
Playstyle & Rotation
This is the practical priority list: how the spec plays moment to moment, when to spend, and where cooldowns belong.
Opener
5 steps- 1Pre-position and pre-cast if the pull timer allows
- 2Arcane Surge
- 3Spellslinger: Touch of the Magi immediately after Arcane Surge
- 4Sunfury: build during Arcane Surge, then Touch of the Magi around 5 seconds remaining
- 5Build Arcane Salvo stacks, then Barrage at the correct stack threshold
Major Cooldowns
5 steps- Arcane Surge is the big burn and should align with Touch of the Magi correctly for your hero tree
- Touch of the Magi also creates miniburns between Arcane Surge uses; do not delay them into desync
- Spellslinger uses Barrage at 20 Salvo stacks because Polished Focus refunds stacks and buffs Barrage
- Sunfury uses Arcane Soul to spam Barrage after the Arcane Phoenix expires
- Use defensives early: Barrier on cooldown, Alter Time before hits, and Ice Cold/Ice Block for lethal mechanics
Single-target priority
5 steps- 1Use Arcane Surge and Touch of the Magi on cooldown unless Sunfury timing requires the 5-second setup
- 2Spellslinger: use Arcane Orb only with Clearcasting and Barrage at 20 Arcane Salvo stacks
- 3Sunfury: use Arcane Missiles with Clearcasting to build Salvo, then Barrage at 25 stacks or during Arcane Soul
- 4Use Arcane Orb when low on Arcane Charges
- 5Use Arcane Blast as filler and Clearcasting fishing; Barrage when out of mana
AoE / multi-target priority
5 steps- 1Spellslinger: Arcane Orb with Clearcasting while at 14 or fewer Arcane Salvo stacks
- 2Barrage at 20 Salvo stacks as Spellslinger or 25 as Sunfury
- 3Use Arcane Pulse at 3+ targets
- 4Use Touch of the Magi on the priority target and make sure it lives through the pulse after the explosion
- 5Barrage when out of mana to reset the cycle
Talents
Pick your hero tree by the fight’s damage profile - single-target on pure bosses, multi-target on cleave and add fights.
Single-target: Spellslinger
Spellslinger is the recommended default, built around Arcane Splinters, Arcane Orb, Polished Focus, and 20-stack Arcane Barrages.
- Spellslinger hero tree
- Stat priority: Intellect > Mastery
- Interrupt: Counterspell
Multi-target: Spellslinger
Spellslinger is also recommended for Mythic+ and cleave. Sunfury is playable, but its Arcane Soul and 25-stack Barrage rhythm is easier to desync.
- Spellslinger hero tree
- Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
- Interrupt: Counterspell
Loadouts by Content
Talent focus and live gear for each type of content. Copy the picks into the talent calculator to build and share your tree - verified in-game import strings are added as they are theorycrafted, never guessed.
Pure Single-Target - Spellslinger
Recommended single-target build. Arcane Orb and Arcane Splinters build Arcane Salvo so Arcane Barrage can be fired at the correct 20-stack threshold.
C4DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYGGLzMzswMDamxAAAwAAgAmZmZZZmJWAAYbMzMjZbxyMzMmZMGzMjxCzMzMzAAMAAAmZBAMDAGGMythic+ / Raid Cleave - Spellslinger
Recommended cleave and dungeon build. Adds Arcane Pulse for 3+ targets while keeping the Spellslinger Salvo/Barrage engine intact.
C4DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMzwMLzMzsgZGamxAAAwAAgAmZmZZZmJWAAYbGzMjZzsMzMjZGjhZmZswMzMPwMAADAAgZWAAzAghBOptional - Sunfury
Playable if you prefer Arcane Phoenix and Arcane Soul, but it requires a different 25-stack Salvo rhythm and a delayed Touch setup near the end of Arcane Surge.
Secondary-stat enchants are flexible. They change with your current gear and the enemy profile in a specific raid boss, dungeon, 2v2, 3v3, or Blitz match. As the live model fills in, this page will show enchants and gear by boss, dungeon, and PvP bracket.
Equipment
Tier set notes, target gear, trinkets, embellishments, and boss-specific gear links.
Treat secondary-stat enchants as matchup-aware recommendations, not permanent rules. Your current gear, raid boss damage profile, dungeon pulls, and arena or Blitz enemies can change whether Haste, Mastery, Critical Strike, Versatility, avoidance, leech, or movement is the right enchant for that slot.
Gearing notes
Use the BiS tables as a target list, then prefer item level and the secondary stats shown in this guide.

Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Best in Slot by Boss
Gear and talents change per fight. For each boss we surface the current #1 parse as the best-in-slot reference - open any boss to copy that player’s full gear from Warcraft Logs. The recommended hero tree follows the fight’s damage profile.
Utility & Defensives
The Mage toolkit, shared across every spec - a few entries are talent choices. Landing these on cue is what separates a good Arcane from a great one.
Time Warp is a solo Bloodlust; Ice Block is a full immunity that also clears a lethal cast.
Interrupt: Counterspell - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Arcane macros page.
Interface & Macros

/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] CounterspellTips & Tricks
- Do not use the old Radiant Spark flow. Arcane's modern damage revolves around Arcane Surge, Touch, Salvo, Barrage, and hero-tree rules.
- Spellslinger Arcane Orb should be paired with Clearcasting; otherwise you lose a major part of the triple-Orb value.
- Track Arcane Salvo stacks. Barraging at 18 as Spellslinger or 23 as Sunfury is usually not 'close enough'.
- Touch of the Magi target selection matters. If the target dies before the follow-up pulse finishes, you lose value.
- Use Shimmer and Alter Time proactively so movement does not eat your Surge/Touch globals.
- Polymorph breaks on any damage - keep your DoTs, pet, and AoE off a sheeped target or it pops instantly, and re-cast just before it fades to hold a target
Common Mistakes
- Running out of mana mid-burn
- Barraging at the wrong Arcane Salvo stack count
- Using Touch of the Magi before Arcane Surge as Spellslinger or too early as Sunfury
- Using Arcane Orb without Clearcasting in Spellslinger builds
- Standing still through mechanics instead of planning Shimmer / Alter Time
Talents by enemy class
Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. Named picks appear only in reviewed matchup plans; the baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.
Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.
Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.
Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.
