Strong when

Plan around

  • More cast-locked than Beast Mastery
  • Longer Aimed Shot cast time in Midnight punishes poor movement planning
  • Rapid Fire can be clipped by sloppy queued casts without no-channeling macros
  • Proc-heavy Dark Ranger windows can feel awkward if Black Arrow / Deathblow timing is missed
Character setup

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Weapon Damage
  2. 2.Agility
  3. 3.Critical Strike
  4. 4.Mastery
  5. 5.Haste
  6. 6.Versatility

Weapon damage and Agility are foundational. Critical Strike is the best secondary because it compounds with Lethality, Penetrating Shots, Critical Precision, Bulletstorm/Incendiary Ammunition, and Apex Aimed Shot interactions. Mastery follows for Sniper Training damage and range; Haste smooths Focus, Aimed Shot cast time, and cooldowns; Versatility is mostly survival.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Spend every Precise Shots proc: every Aimed Shot (and, with talents, Rapid Fire) generates one, and in practice you simply follow every Aimed Shot or Rapid Fire with a spender - Arcane Shot on single target, Multi-Shot on 2+ targets with Trick Shots.
  • Use Rapid Fire to generate Bulletstorm, then pour heavily buffed Aimed Shots into that window - Rapid Fire's own damage is secondary in most builds.
  • Reserve movement for when you are not casting Aimed Shot: you can move freely between casts without interrupting the rotation, so use those gaps to constantly improve your position instead of standing still.
Dark RangerMakes Black Arrow your primary Precise Shots spender and turns Trueshot's button into a one-use Wailing Arrow.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Black Arrow - primary Precise Shots spender - cast immediately after every Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire while a proc is available
  2. 2.Aimed Shot - if it is about to reach 2 charges; during Trueshot, also if you have a Black Arrow proc but no Precise Shots to spend it with
  3. 3.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire so a fresh Bulletstorm carries into the window - never back-to-back with Volley in either order
  4. 4.Rapid Fire - on cooldown
  5. 5.Wailing Arrow - if you do not have a Black Arrow proc
  6. 6.Arcane Shot - backup Precise Shots spender when Black Arrow is not available
  7. 7.Volley - on cooldown - it activates Double Tap, so never cast it directly before or after Trueshot
  8. 8.Aimed Shot
  9. 9.Explosive Shot
  10. 10.Steady Shot - filler - fills every empty moment with Focus and Aimed Shot cooldown reduction

AoE priority

  1. 1.Black Arrow - primary Precise Shots spender after every Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire
  2. 2.Aimed Shot - if at or about to reach 2 charges, provided Trick Shots is up
  3. 3.Multi-Shot - backup Precise Shots spender when Black Arrow is unavailable, and to activate Trick Shots whenever it is down
  4. 4.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire - never back-to-back with Volley
  5. 5.Rapid Fire - on cooldown, provided Trick Shots is up
  6. 6.Wailing Arrow - if you have no Black Arrow proc
  7. 7.Volley - on cooldown - never directly before or after Trueshot
  8. 8.Aimed Shot
  9. 9.Multi-Shot - with Precise Shots
  10. 10.Explosive Shot - if talented, which it typically is not in AoE builds
  11. 11.Steady Shot - filler

Opener

  1. 1.Ensure Hunter's Mark is on the highest-health target - coordinate marks if there are multiple Hunters.
  2. 2.Pre-use a cast-time on-use trinket about 4.5 seconds before combat.
  3. 3.Pre-cast Aimed Shot about 2.5 seconds before combat so it lands as the pull starts.
  4. 4.Cast Black Arrow, then Aimed Shot.
  5. 5.Activate Trueshot.
  6. 6.Cast Black Arrow, Rapid Fire, Black Arrow, Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot.
  7. 7.Cast Wailing Arrow if you need a Black Arrow proc, then Aimed Shot and continue the normal priority.
  8. 8.In AoE, open with Black Arrow, trinket, Rapid Fire, Black Arrow, Trueshot, Aimed Shot, Black Arrow, Wailing Arrow (if you need a proc), Volley, Aimed Shot.
SentinelPlays around Volley, Bulletstorm-buffed Aimed Shots, and Moonlight Chakram from Trueshot. With Aspect of the Hydra instead of Trick Shots, use the single-target priority in AoE as well.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Volley - on cooldown - on 1 target cast Volley into Rapid Fire before Trueshot when both are up; never directly before or after Trueshot, which wastes Double Tap
  2. 2.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire so a fresh Bulletstorm carries into the window
  3. 3.Aimed Shot - if it is about to reach 2 charges
  4. 4.Rapid Fire - if Bulletstorm is down or would expire before your next Aimed Shot, or regardless if the target is below 20% HP
  5. 5.Kill Shot - preferred Precise Shots spender on single target - skip it on 2+ targets
  6. 6.Arcane Shot - Precise Shots spender - during Trueshot, only immediately after an Aimed Shot, never as a follow-up to Rapid Fire or Volley
  7. 7.Moonlight Chakram - if Trueshot has fewer than 3 seconds remaining, to guarantee a Chakram cast inside the window
  8. 8.Aimed Shot
  9. 9.Moonlight Chakram - as a filler - never let it lapse
  10. 10.Rapid Fire
  11. 11.Explosive Shot
  12. 12.Steady Shot - filler - Focus and Aimed Shot cooldown reduction

AoE priority

  1. 1.Multi-Shot - spend the Precise Shots stacks from Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire, and activate Trick Shots whenever it is down
  2. 2.Rapid Fire - if Bulletstorm is down or would expire before your next Aimed Shot, or if the target is below 20% HP
  3. 3.Trueshot - never back-to-back with Volley in either order
  4. 4.Volley - on cooldown
  5. 5.Explosive Shot - with Shrapnel Shot: outside Trueshot, without a Lock and Load proc, when Aimed Shot has 1 or fewer charges
  6. 6.Aimed Shot - whenever possible
  7. 7.Moonlight Chakram - when you have no Aimed Shots remaining or Trueshot is about to run out
  8. 8.Rapid Fire - with Trick Shots
  9. 9.Explosive Shot
  10. 10.Steady Shot - filler

Opener

  1. 1.Ensure Hunter's Mark is on the highest-health target - coordinate marks if there are multiple Hunters.
  2. 2.Pre-cast Aimed Shot about 2.5 seconds before combat so it lands as the pull starts.
  3. 3.Cast Arcane Shot, then Volley.
  4. 4.Use your on-use trinket, then cast Rapid Fire and Arcane Shot.
  5. 5.Activate Trueshot.
  6. 6.Cast Aimed Shot, then Arcane Shot.
  7. 7.Cast Moonlight Chakram when out of Aimed Shots or at the end of Trueshot, then continue the normal priority.
  8. 8.In AoE, open with Multi-Shot, trinket, Rapid Fire, Multi-Shot, Trueshot, Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Volley, Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Moonlight Chakram.

Pre-combat checks

  • Drink your flask (Flask of the Shattered Sun).
  • Apply Thalassian Phoenix Oil to your weapon.
  • Apply Hunter's Mark to your target - if there are multiple Hunters, coordinate which ones you each Mark.
  • Eat food, ideally of the Hearty variety so it does not fade on death.

Major cooldowns

Trueshot

  • Massively increases critical strike chance, damage, and the cooldown rates of Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire, plus Aimed Shot's cast time - your priorities do not change inside it.
  • Activate it right before an Aimed Shot comes up naturally in your rotation; Aimed Shot is the ability you most want the window to amplify.
  • Enter the window with a healthy Bulletstorm duration - cast Rapid Fire right before pressing Trueshot.
  • Dark Ranger: activating Trueshot also grants a Black Arrow proc, which needs Precise Shots active before it can be fired.
  • Both trees: during the window the Trueshot button becomes a one-use ability - Wailing Arrow for Dark Ranger, Moonlight Chakram for Sentinel. Use it as filler where it does not interfere with your other priorities.

On-use trinkets

  • Pair stat-granting on-use trinkets with Trueshot.
  • Use cast-time trinkets shortly before Trueshot - avoid spending time on them after the window has already been popped, and ideally pair them with Rapid Fire as in the opener.

Advanced tips

Always Be Casting

  • Marksmanship always has something to cast: even with every resource and cooldown spent, Steady Shot fills the gap, and within about 2 seconds you are back to casting Aimed Shot.
  • Slow button presses, pressing abilities that are not available, and pausing the rotation to handle mechanics all bleed small windows of dead time - those windows add up quickly and are the difference between a good and a great player.

Embellishments

Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.

Survival and control

Utility, defensives, and movement

Your Hunter toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.

Feign Death drops threat and resets many boss mechanics; Aspect of the Turtle is a full immunity.

Interrupt: Counter Shot - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Marksmanship macros page.

Execution

Interface and macros

Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.

Better Blizzplates - cleaner, threat-colored nameplates with cast bars and cooldown text - the nameplate upgrade nearly every top player runs.
OmniCD - party and enemy defensive/utility cooldown tracking - the biggest information edge the base UI still does not show.
Mythic Dungeon Tools - build and follow pull-by-pull Mythic+ routes.
Details! (optional) - deep damage/healing breakdowns and Warcraft Logs uploads beyond Midnight's built-in meter.
Hekili - optional priority helper - great for learning a new spec's rotation.

Arena Talent Planning

Talents by enemy class

Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. The baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.

Open full matchup guide
Their pressure

Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.

Talent focus

Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.

Game plan

Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.

No reviewed PvP baseline is published for this spec yet. Use the live tree to apply the matchup focus above rather than treating a PvE build as an arena answer.
