Strong when

Plan around

  • 25-yard range punishes lazy positioning
  • Empower ranks and Dragonrage setup are easy to waste
  • Defensives are strong, but the spec feels fragile if Obsidian Scales and Stretch Time are late
Character setup

Stat priority and consumables

Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.

  1. 1.Intellect
  2. 2.Haste
  3. 3.Critical Strike
  4. 4.Mastery
  5. 5.Versatility

Intellect is your best stat. Haste smooths casts, channels, and Essence flow; Critical Strike gains extra value from Spellweaver's Dominance; Mastery is strongest on high-health targets and during Dragonrage; Versatility is useful but rarely something you stack intentionally.

Opener and priority

Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.

Core principles

  • Build and spend: Disintegrate and Pyre spend Essence, while Living Flame and Azure Strike are the fillers that generate Essence Burst - spend Essence and Essence Burst, then fill while waiting.
  • Use cooldowns frequently: Dragonrage (plus Deep Breath for Scalecommander) is the main cooldown, Essence Burst is guaranteed from fillers during it, and Eternity Surge and Fire Breath extend it via Animosity - press both on cooldown during the window.
  • Always be casting: constant uptime is the key to Devastation damage. Use Hover to cast on the move, fill downtime with something (even Azure Strike), and use cooldowns and Empowered spells early and often.
ScalecommanderWeaves Deep Breath into the rotation and plays around Mass Disintegrate; each Deep Breath also refunds a Hover charge via Slipstream.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Hover - if capped on charges and Deep Breath is ready soon
  2. 2.Deep Breath - also when Strafing Run is about to expire
  3. 3.Dragonrage
  4. 4.Tip the Scales
  5. 5.Eternity Surge - Rank 1
  6. 6.Fire Breath - Rank 1
  7. 7.Azure Sweep - if not capped on Essence Burst
  8. 8.Disintegrate - channel with Mass Disintegrate first, then normal channels
  9. 9.Living Flame - filler
  10. 10.Azure Strike - if needed for movement

AoE priority

  1. 1.Hover - if capped on charges and Deep Breath is ready soon
  2. 2.Deep Breath
  3. 3.Dragonrage
  4. 4.Tip the Scales - on Eternity Surge
  5. 5.Fire Breath - Rank 1
  6. 6.Eternity Surge - Rank 1
  7. 7.Deep Breath - with Strafing Run
  8. 8.Pyre - with 18+ stacks of Charged Blast at 3+ targets
  9. 9.Disintegrate - channel with Mass Disintegrate
  10. 10.Pyre - at 3+ targets with Volatility, or at 4+ targets regardless
  11. 11.Disintegrate - otherwise, channel it
  12. 12.Azure Sweep
  13. 13.Living Flame - with Leaping Flames and Burnout
  14. 14.Azure Strike - filler

Opener

  1. 1.Cast Hover twice before combat.
  2. 2.Pre-cast Living Flame and use your damage potion (in AoE, use your on-use damage trinket now).
  3. 3.Cast Deep Breath.
  4. 4.Cast Dragonrage, then Tip the Scales.
  5. 5.Cast Eternity Surge, then Fire Breath Rank 1.
  6. 6.AoE only: cast Deep Breath again.
  7. 7.Channel Disintegrate - Dragonrage is now active, continue with the normal rotation.
  8. 8.Outside of AoE, delay your damage trinket until you have 4 stacks of Rising Fury.
FlameshaperPlays around keeping the Fire Breath DoT rolling; otherwise very close to the core Devastation loop.

Single-target priority

  1. 1.Dragonrage
  2. 2.Tip the Scales - if Eternity Surge is ready
  3. 3.Eternity Surge - with Tip the Scales
  4. 4.Fire Breath - cast to maintain the DoT debuff
  5. 5.Eternity Surge - Rank 1
  6. 6.Disintegrate - channel
  7. 7.Azure Sweep
  8. 8.Living Flame - filler
  9. 9.Azure Strike - if needed for movement

AoE priority

  1. 1.Dragonrage
  2. 2.Tip the Scales - on Eternity Surge
  3. 3.Fire Breath - Rank 1, to maintain the DoT debuff
  4. 4.Eternity Surge - Rank 1
  5. 5.Pyre
  6. 6.Azure Sweep
  7. 7.Living Flame - with Leaping Flames or Burnout
  8. 8.Azure Strike - filler

Opener

  1. 1.Pre-cast Living Flame and use your damage potion.
  2. 2.AoE only: cast Fire Breath Rank 1.
  3. 3.Cast Dragonrage, then Tip the Scales.
  4. 4.Cast Eternity Surge, then Fire Breath Rank 1.
  5. 5.Channel Disintegrate, or cast Pyre in AoE - Dragonrage is now active, continue with the normal rotation.
  6. 6.Delay your damage trinket until you have 4 stacks of Rising Fury.

Pre-combat checks

  • Cast Blessing of the Bronze on the group.
  • Heal up with Living Flame / Emerald Blossom / Verdant Embrace - non-overhealing heals also fill your Scarlet Adaptation buff.
  • Consider threat: you have no aggro drop, so think twice about going full blast before the tank establishes threat.

Major cooldowns

Dragonrage

  • Your main cooldown - guarantees Essence Burst procs from Living Flame and Azure Strike for its duration. Aim to use it every 2 minutes.
  • Activating it fires 3 Pyres at random targets, and Tyranny grants the full effect of Mastery: Giantkiller during it.
  • Fire Breath and Eternity Surge extend the buff through Animosity - with proper play the window averages about 32 seconds.
  • It can be held for AoE, but it is a long buff, so do not sit on it for long.
  • Apex talents amplify the window, and Rising Fury grants a damage buff after Dragonrage expires - stack it before your on-use trinket.

Empowered spells and Tip the Scales

  • Eternity Surge and Fire Breath carry their own short cooldowns - check what is available when entering Dragonrage and press them on cooldown during it.
  • Tip the Scales makes your next Empowered spell instant at max rank - in the opener and during Dragonrage, spend it on Eternity Surge.
  • Both empowers are the only spells that cannot be cast on the move with Hover, so plan your feet before committing.

Advanced tips

Hover and Movement

  • Hover can be cast while casting and lets you cast on the move; recasting adds duration, so you never waste it by refreshing early.
  • Glide is faster than running - triple-tap spacebar so the cancel drops the slowfall and you hit the ground quicker; some ground effects miss you at the top of a Glide.
  • Hover lets you Glide while channeling Disintegrate - tap spacebar to hop around the battlefield mid-channel.
  • Keep a Hover charge in hand for cooldown windows - downtime during Dragonrage costs far more. Scalecommander gets a charge refunded by each Deep Breath via Slipstream, so make room for it ahead of time.
Build

Talents and hero trees

Use Scalecommander for the single-target profile below and Scalecommander when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.

Recommended starting profiles

Single-target: Scalecommander

Scalecommander is the recommended single-target raid build in 12.0.7. It keeps strong priority damage while preserving cleave and raid utility.

  • Scalecommander hero tree
  • Stat priority: Intellect > Haste
  • Interrupt: Quell

Multi-target: Scalecommander

Scalecommander is also the recommended cleave and Mythic+ default because Bombardments, Mass Disintegrate, and Deep Breath scale cleanly into packs.

  • Scalecommander hero tree
  • Prioritize AoE and add-swap talents
  • Interrupt: Quell

Raid Single-Target - Scalecommander

Default raid build. Scalecommander keeps strong boss damage while preserving cleave, making it the safest recommended tree for Midnight Season 1 bosses.

Mythic+ / Raid Cleave - Scalecommander

Recommended dungeon and cleave build. Bombardments, Deep Breath, Pyre, Mass Disintegrate, and Eternity Surge let you keep priority damage while cleaving packs.

Optional Weekly Key - Flameshaper

Playable if you enjoy the Engulf/Fire Breath profile, but it is less flexible than Scalecommander and usually costs too much when you swap between single-target and AoE.

Utility, defensives, and movement

Your Evoker toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.

Dracthyr-only; most spells cap around 25 yards and empowered casts scale with hold time.

Interrupt: Quell - grab a focus-interrupt macro on the Devastation macros page.

Execution

Interface and macros

Use interface changes only when they expose a decision sooner: resources, procs, defensives, dispels, interrupts, and encounter assignments.

Better Blizzplates - cleaner, threat-colored nameplates with cast bars and cooldown text - the nameplate upgrade nearly every top player runs.
OmniCD - party and enemy defensive/utility cooldown tracking - the biggest information edge the base UI still does not show.
Mythic Dungeon Tools - build and follow pull-by-pull Mythic+ routes.
Details! (optional) - deep damage/healing breakdowns and Warcraft Logs uploads beyond Midnight's built-in meter.
Hekili - optional priority helper - great for learning a new spec's rotation.

Execution review

What improves results

  • Treat 25 yards as a mechanic. Pre-position before the pull and before every boss movement phase.
  • Hover before movement starts so your rotation continues while everyone else is repositioning.
  • Do not enter Dragonrage empty. Pool Essence and have Fire Breath/Eternity Surge ready.
  • Match empower rank to target count; max rank is not automatically correct.
  • Track Shattering Stars as a passive empower interaction; it is not a separate action-bar button.
  • Rescue is a raid tool. Pair it with Twin Guardian when a teammate must move while continuing to cast.
  • Use Quell, Tail Swipe, Wing Buffet, and Oppressing Roar as part of the group's stop plan in Mythic+.
Self-review

Common mistakes

  • Overcapping Essence
  • Using the wrong empower rank
  • Standing still through mechanics instead of Hovering early
  • Wasting Dragonrage with no setup
  • Deep Breathing through danger or out of range of the boss
  • Letting Fire Breath drift so far that Dragonrage windows desync
