Build Your WoW Keybinds

Design a keybinding setup you can play for years, then see which abilities deserve your best keys on every class and spec. Start with the fundamentals, then jump to your spec.

First session

A 30-minute setup order

  1. 01

    Set movement

Mouse-turn, strafe on A/D, then bind your interrupt and movement ability.

  2. 02

    Bind your survival

Put your personal defensive, healthstone, and PvP trinket where every alt can use them.

  3. 03

    Add rotation

Move four core abilities, practice on a dummy, then add the rest a layer at a time.

Binding planner

Build a complete, usable layout

Pick your specialization and physical input setup. The planner assigns the most frequent spells to the easiest reaches, puts reaction tools on fixed anchors, and uses modifiers for lower-frequency cooldowns.

Which input setup do you have?

Select this yourself: browsers cannot reliably identify the number of physical mouse buttons available in WoW.

Which modifier layers are allowed?

This is a hard constraint. Disabled modifier combinations are removed from the key pool, automatic suggestions, and the saved layout. Ctrl + Shift and triple modifiers start off.

Bind profiles

Save this class and spec setup in this browser, then reload it without rebuilding the draft.

Step 1 · Key space

Start with the hand you actually have

Choose only keys you would genuinely press in combat. Green keys are premium movement-safe candidates, blue keys are usable but slower, and violet keys stay dedicated to movement. Clicking a key reveals its posture cost before it enters the Build pool.

The map deliberately keeps W, A, D, Space, Tab, mouse controls, and modifier keys visible. They are part of your available input system even when they should not become an action-bar button.

Two-button mouse

Mouse4 and Mouse5 plus every enabled modifier layer are available to the Build pool. Reserve either one in System if you use it for push-to-talk or ping.

Practical keybind inventory

Every practical combat, modifier, mouse, and reserved input in this layout. Scores run from 1 to 5 and assume mouse-turn, A/D strafe, S reserved or unbound, and Caps Lock remapped to Ctrl so the pinky can reach the Ctrl layer without leaving movement.

Set Caps Lock to Ctrl on Windows

This is an operating-system key remap, not an in-game macro. Open PowerShell as Administrator, run the setup script, then restart Windows. It maps physical Caps Lock to Left Ctrl and leaves the actual Ctrl keys unchanged.

# Run PowerShell as Administrator, then restart Windows.
$path = "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout"
$capsLockToLeftCtrl = [byte[]](
  0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,
  0x02,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x1D,0x00,0x3A,0x00,
  0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00
)
New-ItemProperty -Path $path -Name "Scancode Map" -PropertyType Binary -Value $capsLockToLeftCtrl -Force

To restore normal Caps Lock behavior, run this in an elevated PowerShell window and restart Windows:

# Run PowerShell as Administrator, then restart Windows.
Remove-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout" -Name "Scancode Map" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Pair your binds with mouseover and focus macros so one key both targets and casts.

See the Macros guide

1. Stop clicking, start binding

Clicking abilities with your mouse forces you to stop steering your character and aim at a tiny button. Keybinding lets you cast while your right hand keeps the camera and your left hand keeps moving. The goal is simple: every ability you press in combat should have a key you can reach without looking down and without lifting your fingers off your movement keys.

  • Never click core abilities: Anything you press in your rotation must be a key, not a mouse click.
  • Keep steering: Bind so your hand never leaves WASD; turn with the mouse, not the keyboard.
  • Clicking is fine for: Out-of-combat mounts, toys, and things you press once a raid night.

2. Map your reachable zone

With your left hand resting on WASD, only a limited set of keys is comfortably reachable. That set is your budget. List every key you can hit without stretching, then treat those as premium real estate. Everything you bind competes for those slots, so spend them on what you press most.

  • Easy reach: 1 2 3 4, Q E R F, and your two thumb mouse buttons (Mouse4/Mouse5).
  • Slight stretch: 5 6, T G Z X C V - fine for less frequent abilities.
  • Awkward: 7 8 9 0 and F-keys - avoid for anything used in combat.

3. Let modifiers multiply your keys

Shift, Ctrl, and Alt each turn your reachable keys into a whole new layer. Around fourteen easy keys become fifty-plus binds. The trick is to give each modifier a consistent MEANING so you never have to think about where something is. A common scheme is below.

  • No modifier: Core rotational abilities you press constantly.
  • Shift + key: Offensive cooldowns and burst.
  • Ctrl + key: Defensives and personal survival.
  • Alt + key: Utility, crowd control, and mouseover/focus macros.

4. Sort every ability into a bucket

Before you bind anything, sort your spec's spells into six buckets. This is exactly how the per class-spec section below is organized, so you can map each list straight onto your layers. Frequency decides the key; the bucket decides the modifier.

  • Core: Builders and spenders you press every few seconds. Best keys, no modifier.
  • Cooldowns: Offensive burst on a 1-3 minute timer. Shift layer.
  • Defensives: Damage reduction and self-heals. Ctrl layer or a fixed defensive key.
  • Interrupt / CC: Kick, stun, and crowd control. Fixed keys you keep identical across all characters.
  • Movement: Gap closers, blinks, and speed. Reachable keys or mouse buttons.
  • Utility: Dispels, external buffs, and situational tools. Alt layer.

5. Match frequency to reach

Now place the buckets. The single rule: the more often you press something, the easier the key must be. Your most-spammed builder goes on 1 or a thumb button; a three-minute cooldown can live on Shift+5. The reference table below is a proven starting layout you can adapt.

KeyRecommended use
1 2 3 4Core rotational abilities - the ones you press most.
Q ECore or high-value utility within easy reach.
RInterrupt - keep it identical on every character.
FA core ability or your interact/loot key.
Mouse4 Mouse5High-frequency abilities, or interrupt and CC.
5 6 T GCooldowns and less frequent core abilities.
Z X C VDefensives, movement, and crowd control.
Shift + keyOffensive cooldowns and burst window.
Ctrl + keyDefensives and personal survival.
Alt + keyUtility, dispels, and mouseover/focus macros.
SpacebarJump - leave it alone.

6. Be consistent across every character

Bind the same ROLE to the same key on every spec and every alt. If your interrupt is always Mouse4, your muscle memory transfers the moment you swap characters and you never accidentally waste a global. Consistency matters more than any individual key choice.

  • Interrupt: Same key on all 13 classes - the most important shared bind.
  • Trinket and racial: Fix them on one key each so they fire the same everywhere.
  • Defensive slot: Reserve one key (for example Ctrl+F) as your always-defensive slot.

7. Set up your mouse

Your mouse is prime keybinding space. At minimum use right-click to turn the camera, and bind your two thumb buttons to high-frequency abilities or your interrupt. If you own an MMO mouse, the thumb grid is ideal for mouseover heals and focus casts. Pair these with the macros on the Macros page so a single button both targets and casts.

  • Right-click turn: Hold to steer with the mouse; strafe with A and D.
  • Mouse4 / Mouse5: Interrupt and a core ability, or CC and a defensive.
  • Mouseover macros: Combine a thumb button with a mouseover macro to heal without targeting.

8. Free your bars with an addon

The default UI limits how you arrange bars. Bar addons let you place buttons anywhere, hide empty bars, and swap pages automatically by stance or form. You do not need them to keybind, but they make a clean, readable layout much easier.

  • Bartender4 / Dominos: Lightweight bar replacements for custom placement.
  • ElvUI: Full UI suite with built-in bars if you want an all-in-one look.
  • Stance paging: Auto-swap bars for Druid forms, Warrior stances, and stealth.

9. Keep control of movement and camera

Great binds are wasted if your movement is fighting you. Steer with the mouse, keep A and D as strafe rather than turn, and make sure your gap closers and defensives are reachable while moving. A tiny bit of retraining here pays off more than any single ability bind.

  • Strafe, do not turn: Set A and D to strafe left/right; turn with the mouse only.
  • Jump: Keep Spacebar for jumping; do not bury a core ability under it.
  • Reachable movement: Blink, Charge, and Disengage must be pressable mid-strafe.

10. Ergonomics and drilling it in

A comfortable hand lasts a whole raid; an overloaded pinky does not. Keep your wrist neutral, leave keys you cannot reach comfortably unbound, and use hidden action bars for lower-frequency macros rather than forcing every spell onto the visible bars. New binds feel wrong for a day and automatic by the end of the week.

  • Hidden bars: Keep low-frequency macros on hidden bars so the visible bars only show actions you need to scan during combat.
  • Spread the load: Do not stack everything on the pinky; share with thumb and index.
  • Drill on a dummy: Run your rotation on a training dummy until the new keys are automatic.

11. Lay out your UI with Edit Mode

Keybinds move your fingers; your interface tells your eyes what to press. Retail's built-in Edit Mode (Game Menu, then Edit Mode) lets you drag, scale, and snap every core frame with no addon - action bars, your player and target frames, the cast bar, party and raid frames, buffs, and the minimap. Spend ten minutes here once and the whole screen reads faster. The single biggest win is pulling your health, your target, and your cast bar into a tight cluster near the center so your eyes never leave the action.

  • Open it: Game Menu (Esc), then Edit Mode. Drag a frame to move it; use the side panel to scale it.
  • Center your eyes: Group health, target, and cast bar near your character, not in the far corners of the screen.
  • Show the bars you use: Enable extra action bars in Edit Mode, then bind them - a hidden bar can still hold keybound spells.
  • Save layouts: Edit Mode stores named layouts, so you can keep a clean healing layout and a DPS layout and load the right one per spec.

12. Turn on the options that win games

A few default settings are off or buried, and switching them on is a bigger upgrade than any addon. These are what make your interrupts land, your mouseover heals possible, and your defensives obvious - all on the stock UI.

  • Enemy cast bars on nameplates: Turn on nameplate cast bars so you can time an interrupt on any enemy without even targeting it.
  • Always show nameplates: Stop tapping V mid-pull - set enemy nameplates to always on, and enable stacking so they never overlap.
  • Raid-Style Party Frames: In Raid Frame options, use raid-style party frames and show only dispellable debuffs - this is what makes mouseover heals and dispels work.
  • Self Cast / Focus Cast key: Under Gameplay, then Combat: set or clear these so they never clash with your Ctrl/Shift/Alt macro modifiers.
  • Status Text: numeric: Show real health numbers on unit frames so you know exactly when to pop a defensive or start your execute.
  • Focus frame: Set a focus with /focus and place its frame in Edit Mode - the backbone of every focus interrupt and CC macro.

Each spec is sorted into buckets. Put Core on your easiest keys, Cooldowns on the Shift layer, Defensive on your fixed survival key, and Utility on the Alt layer. Adjust to your talents.
