Midnight Season 2 encounter guide

Ula'tek

Ula'tek, the imprisoned snake goddess, is a three-phase fight with an intermission before the final phase, and the whole encounter revolves around her eggs: break them on your terms for weakened adds, or let venom touch them and fight empowered adds instead. The raid loops between dodging Caustic Waves, group-soaking Spectral Coils to smash carried eggs, and bursting the Venomous Heart for double damage during Rage of the Shackled. Groups wipe when eggs hatch in venom, when Serpent's Bite circles go unsoaked in Phase 3, and when players are slow to evacuate the platform for Circling Prey.

Before the pull

Set the encounter assignments before pull

  • Split the raid into two even groups before the pull, with one tank leading each group, because Phase 2 sends half the raid to each side of the room to fight a Doomscale Warden.
  • Assign every player an egg pickup responsibility on the pull and after each Call of the Serpent; an egg that touches venom or finishes its cast hatches into an empowered add that sprays Putrid Membrane over the whole raid.
  • Assign one carrier per side for the Phase 2 Doomscale Egg: the raid has 90 seconds to pick it up, and the carrier then has 20 seconds to walk it into the Doomscale Cauldron.
  • Set an interrupt rotation for Malice on the Doomscale Wardens and Anguished Cry on the Weakened Doomscales; both are raid-killers if they finish casting.
  • Plan Bloodlust and Heroism for Phase 3, and hold major DPS cooldowns for the two Rage of the Shackled burns, where the Venomous Heart takes 200 percent increased damage.
  • Plan healing cooldowns for Rage of the Shackled, Spectral Coils soaks, and the Phase 3 Serpent's Bite plus Volatile Purge sequence, and remind the raid that Putrid Membrane rot stacks for the rest of the fight.
Fight flow

Resolve the encounter in this order

  1. 01

Pull, split tanks, and grab the first eggs

Open with one tank on Ula'tek and one tank on the Gore Rattle tail, which spawns on the left or right side and shares health with the boss. Everyone else walks over the eggs near the center to pick one up, then avoids all venom while carrying it.

  2. 02

Dodge Caustic Waves and swap tanks

When Ula'tek reaches back with one wing, waves come from that side first and the other side follows, then the tail sends its own sets of waves. Dodge to the safe side, keep carried eggs out of every wave, and have the tanks swap boss and tail during this cast.

  3. 03

Soak Spectral Coils to break your eggs

When the tail casts Spectral Coils, every player except the active boss tank stands in the group soaks on both sides of the tail. The impact splits its damage among soakers and smashes every carried egg, spawning weakened adds that you group and AoE down.

  4. 04

    Burn the Venomous Heart

At the end of Phase 1, Rage of the Shackled deals rolling raid damage, drops Falling Debris circles to dodge, and exposes the Venomous Heart. The Heart shares health with Ula'tek and takes 200 percent increased damage for 20 seconds, so pot, burst the Heart, and cleave the boss.

  5. 05

Phase 2: sides, Wardens, and the Cauldron

Split to your assigned sides and kill the Doomscale Warden while interrupting Malice, breaking Grasping Fangs tethers by running away, and killing any Blightscale Clutch it gestates. Once the Warden dies, your side picks up every small egg, the assigned carrier grabs the Doomscale Egg last, and everyone dunks eggs into the Doomscale Cauldron. Interrupt the Weakened Doomscale's Anguished Cry, drag all adds to the center platform for cleave, and burn the second Venomous Heart at around 4:45.

  6. 06

Intermission: catch eggs and rotate soaks

Eggs rain from the ceiling, so pick them all up immediately. Spectral Coils soaks then appear around the platform; move the group from soak to soak to split the damage, break the carried eggs, and AoE the weakened adds as they spawn.

  7. 07

Phase 3: soak, spread, and jump platforms

Ula'tek splits the room into quadrants and repeats a fixed cycle on each platform: kill the egg that lands on your platform, group-soak the Serpent's Bite circles until the debuff fades, stand in the gaps between the orbs that telegraph Caustic Waves, spread away from everyone when Volatile Purge erupts, and evacuate the platform the moment she casts Circling Prey. Cross to her new platform and repeat the cycle until she dies; eggs on destroyed platforms land in venom and hatch empowered adds that need a poison dispel.

Mechanics

What each mechanic asks of you

Eggs (Blightscale Spawn)

Everyone

Pick up eggs by walking over them and break them deliberately, either by standing in a Spectral Coils soak or by damaging the egg to zero health, so a weakened add spawns. Never let a carried egg touch venom, waves, or finish its cast. On Mythic, eggs are Hardened and apply Noxious Shell, so carriers must stay 3 yards from each other.

Failure: A hatched egg spawns an empowered Blightscale Viper that sprays Putrid Membrane on the whole raid, a stacking Nature DoT that lasts the rest of the fight.

Caustic Waves

Everyone

Watch which wing Ula'tek raises; that side sends waves first and the far side follows, and in Phase 1 the tail adds its own waves. In Phase 3 the waves are telegraphed by orbs in front of her, so stand where there are no orbs.

Failure: Each wave hits for roughly 917k Nature damage plus a stacking DoT, and any wave that touches an egg instantly hatches it into an empowered add.

Spectral Coils

Everyone except the active boss tank

Stack in the soak circles on both sides of the tail; the hit is split by the number of players within 10 yards of the impact and smashes every carried egg. On Heroic and Mythic, soakers gain Soul Constrictor and must sit out the next set, so run two alternating soak teams.

Failure: An unsoaked coil hits the entire raid for the full 833k Nature damage, and every egg that was not broken lives on to hatch later.

Gore Rattle tank duty

Tanks

Keep one tank on Ula'tek and one tank on the Gore Rattle tail at all times, and swap targets during each Caustic Waves cast. Stay in melee range of your target, and keep a body inside the Mother's Wrath zone when your tank is marked.

Failure: An untanked tail casts Rattler Slam for about 917k raid-wide Nature damage, an unmeleed boss casts Unchecked Rage on the raid, and an empty Mother's Wrath zone spreads its bites to every player.

Doomscale Egg and Cauldron

Assigned carriers per side

In Phase 2, after the Warden dies, each side picks up all small eggs first, then the assigned player grabs the Doomscale Egg. Walk next to the Doomscale Cauldron to throw each egg in; the raid has 90 seconds to pick the big egg up and the carrier has 20 seconds to dunk it. On Heroic and Mythic, disturbing a Doomscale Egg triggers Mass Gestation on all remaining Blightscale Spawn on that side, so clear the small eggs first.

Failure: A Doomscale Egg that hatches releases a Ravenous Doomscale whose 20-second Dread Roar stuns the raid and wipes it.

Serpent's Bite

Marked players plus assigned soakers

Three players get a 15-second venom debuff in Phase 3. Helpers stand inside a marked player's circle to leech ticks until the debuff fades harmlessly; marked players can spread for dedicated soakers, or overlap circles so one group soaks several at once. Every leecher gains Volatile Purge and must spread away from other players before it erupts 5 seconds later.

Failure: An unsoaked debuff expires and turns the player into a Calcified Corpse, a stun plus roughly 1M Nature damage per second that pierces immunities, and on Mythic the purge also fires Caustic Waves from the player.

Circling Prey

Everyone

When Ula'tek casts Circling Prey she destroys the platform she occupies, so evacuate immediately and jump to a surviving platform, then regroup on the platform where she re-emerges.

Failure: Players caught within 13 yards take about 2.5M Nature damage and a knockback, which usually means falling to their death, and stragglers outside still take 208k.

Caustic WavesStage One and Stage Three

Ula'tek sends waves of venom across the platform that hit for 917186 Nature damage plus a stacking 540199-per-second DoT for 10 seconds, and any wave that connects with an egg instantly hatches it.

Raid response: Watch the raised wing in Phase 1 and dodge to the far side first, then dodge the tail's waves. In Phase 3, stand in the gaps where no telegraph orbs sit in front of her. Tanks swap boss and tail during this cast.

Spectral CoilsStage One and Intermission

Spectral coils crush the platform for 833406 Nature damage to all players, reduced by the number of players within 10 yards of each impact, and the impact breaks every carried egg into a weakened add. On Heroic and Mythic, soakers gain Soul Constrictor and cannot mitigate the next set.

Raid response: Everyone except the active boss tank stacks in the soak circles on both sides of the tail, breaks their eggs, then groups the weakened adds for AoE. On Heroic, alternate two soak teams because of Soul Constrictor.

Rattler SlamStage One

While the Gore Rattle tail is not engaged in melee combat, it slams the platform for 916746 Nature damage to all players.

Raid response: The second tank stays glued to the tail for the entire phase; the tail and boss share health, so DPS can cleave it freely.

Rage of the ShackledStage One and Stage Two

Ula'tek rages for 20 seconds, dealing 41670 Nature damage to the raid every 4 seconds, dropping Falling Debris that hits for 2500217 within 7 yards, and exposing the Venomous Heart, which shares her health and takes 200 percent increased damage.

Raid response: Dodge the debris circles, use a healing cooldown for the rot, and pour every DPS cooldown into the Venomous Heart while cleaving the boss. This burn happens at the end of Phase 1 and again at about 4:45 in Phase 2.

Call of the SerpentStage One and Stage Three

Ula'tek roars and shakes her spawn from the ceiling; eggs impact for 110 Nature damage within 4 yards of each landing spot and then sit on the platform waiting to hatch.

Raid response: Assigned players walk over the new eggs immediately and hold them away from venom until the next Spectral Coils soak or DPS window breaks them safely.

MaliceStage Two

The Doomscale Warden unleashes malice that deals 792000 Nature damage to all players every second for 6 seconds if it completes.

Raid response: Follow the interrupt rotation on each side and never let Malice finish; the Warden also uses Shadow Molt to reposition, so interrupters must stay on it.

Anguished CryStage Two

The Weakened Doomscale screams, dealing 541714 Nature damage to players within 60 yards and stunning them for 6 seconds.

Raid response: Assign a dedicated interrupter to the Weakened Doomscale the moment it leaves the Cauldron, then drag it and the other adds to the center platform for cleave.

Serpent's BiteStage Three

Ula'tek shoots fangs into several players, applying a 15-second venom that turns the victim into a Calcified Corpse on expiration, a stun plus 1000087 Nature damage per second that pierces immunities. Players within 7 yards can leech the venom away but gain Volatile Purge.

Raid response: Marked players spread to their assigned spots, and everyone else stands inside a circle to soak ticks until the debuff fades. Overlapping circles lets soakers clear several marks at once, but simple one-circle soaking is enough.

Volatile PurgeStage Three

Players who leech Serpent's Bite purge the venom after 5 seconds, and the eruption deals 75 Nature damage to players within 7 yards. On Mythic, Caustic Waves also erupt from the player when the aura expires.

Raid response: As soon as the soak completes, everyone spreads apart and stays spread until every purge has erupted, then regroups for the platform jump.

Circling PreyStage Three

Ula'tek destroys the platform she occupies, dealing 2498935 Nature damage and a knockback to players within 13 yards and 208351 Nature damage to players farther away.

Raid response: Evacuate the platform the moment the cast starts and cross to a surviving quadrant, then move to the platform where she re-emerges. Expect the eggs on the destroyed platform to hatch empowered adds that need a poison dispel.

Role plan

Your job in the pull

Tanks

Run a two-target duet all fight: one tank on Ula'tek and one on the Gore Rattle tail, swapping during every Caustic Waves cast. Stay in melee range so Unchecked Rage and Rattler Slam never fire, stand in the Mother's Wrath zone when marked, and in Phase 2 each tank leads one side and picks up the Doomscale adds.

Healers

Assign raid cooldowns to the two Rage of the Shackled burns, the Spectral Coils soaks, and the Phase 3 Serpent's Bite windows. Expect permanent stacking rot from Putrid Membrane whenever an egg hatches wrong, dispel poison off players hit by empowered adds in Phase 3, and top soakers before each Volatile Purge spread.

Melee DPS

Cleave the tail and boss in Phase 1 since they share health, carry eggs between mechanics, and hold burst for the Venomous Heart, which takes double damage while sharing the boss's health pool. In Phase 2, cover the interrupt rotation on your side's Doomscale Warden.

Ranged DPS

Break Blightscale Clutches before Writhing Gestation completes, DPS eggs to zero from range when a soak is not available, and snipe the Phase 3 platform egg quickly so the add pack can be grouped and killed before Serpent's Bite goes out.

Everyone

Pick up your assigned egg, keep it out of every wave and puddle, soak Spectral Coils unless you are the active boss tank, and treat platform evacuation on Circling Prey as the highest priority in Phase 3.
