Midnight Mining leveling, 1 to 100
Level Midnight Mining by mining deposits, not crafting: the three skill brackets, zone order, infused deposits and Overload mechanics, profession equipment, and the week-one Knowledge table.
The short answer
Mine everything to 30, Rich and Infused to 60, then only Rich, Seams, and Infused to 100.
Mining has no recipe route: skill comes from deposits. Base deposits go grey at 60, and the final stretch is roughly 50-70 nodes of Rich deposits, Seams, and Infused variants.
Start in Eversong Woods, bring Deftness for Zul'Aman and Harandar, turn on the Infused Nodes minimap alert, and save Overload for Voidbound deposits. Week-one Knowledge totals about 81 if you chase the books, treasures, and weeklies.

The skill brackets
There is no recipe list for a gathering profession - skill comes from nodes, beasts, and plants in the world. What matters is knowing which ones still pay.
- 1–30
Mine whatever you find
Practically every deposit grants skill in this bracket.
- 30–60
Base deposits turn yellow
Base deposits turn yellow at 30 and grey at 60. Rich deposits, Seams, and Infused variants continue to give skill here.
- 60–100
Only Rich, Seams, and Infused pay
Base deposits are grey. Only Rich deposits, Seams, and Infused variants grant skill - yellow at 60, grey at 100. They spawn randomly in place of normal deposits, so keep mining along your routes. Expect roughly 50-70 nodes for this final stretch; it is the slowest part.
Where to go
Eversong Woods first
The easiest terrain and the lowest mob density. Lightfused deposits here drop Motes of Light.
Zul'Aman and Harandar need Deftness
Both zones have heavy mob pressure, so high Deftness is recommended to gather without fighting. Wild deposits in Zul'Aman drop Motes of Wild Magic; Primal deposits in Harandar drop Motes of Primal Energy. Voidstorm's Voidbound deposits drop Motes of Pure Void.
Turn on the Infused Nodes alert
Infused deposits appear as gold stars on the minimap with the alert enabled - you will ride past them otherwise.
The systems that matter
Infused deposits
Infused deposits glow and drop extra motes but hit you with a negative effect when mined. Mining your first Infused deposit teaches the Overload ability - it lands on the action bar automatically, otherwise check the spellbook's General tab.
Overload
A 12-hour cooldown, reduced by 30 minutes for every Midnight deposit mined - roughly 24 deposits for a full reset. Effects differ per type: Lightfused spawns collectible light circles; Wild spawns an elite with no motes but a +150 Perception buff for 5 minutes; Primal drains 50% of your HP for extra motes; Voidbound opens a portal with grabbable orbs.
Do not waste Overload on Wild deposits
The Wild overload spawns an elite and pays no motes - save the cooldown for Voidbound deposits. Mining Wild deposits also spawns Rumbling Orelings; kill them and mine the corpses for extra motes.
Do not channel Primal below half health
The Primal overload drains 50% of your HP for extra motes, and it can kill you if you channel it at low health.
Profession equipment
Hardhat, Satchel, Pickaxe
Three slots: the hardhat and satchel are crafted by Engineering, the pickaxe by Blacksmithing. Blue and Epic share the same primary skill - Epic only carries more secondary stats. Green pieces are cheapest on the Auction House; blues are bind-on-equip; epics are soulbound and need a Crafting Order.
Missives and enchants
Tools accept missives and tool enchants for Deftness, Finesse, or Perception. The source recommends Deftness or Finesse; Perception only pays if Dazzling Thorium prices are high.
Knowledge points, condensed
Specialization trees unlock at 25, 50, and 75. The week-one sources below are the ones worth chasing before they fall behind.
Specialization trees unlock at 25, 50, and 75
Week-one Knowledge sources total roughly 81: 25 from first-gather discoveries (3 base ores, 3 rich deposits, 3 seams, 12 elemental deposits, 4 overloads, 1 KP each).
The two books
Whisper of the Loa: Mining - 10 KP, sold by Magovu in Zul'Aman for 75 Artisan Miner's Moxie, requires Renown 6 with the Amani Tribe. Echo of Abundance: Mining - 10 KP, sold by Chel the Chip for 1600 Unalloyed Abundance plus 75 Moxie.
Treasures, treatise, and weeklies
Eight world treasures give 24 KP (3 each). The Inscription treatise (Thalassian Treatise on Mining) via crafting order gives 1. The weekly trainer quest rewards Thalassian Miner's Notes for 3. Weekly gathering drops give about 8 (five Igneous Rock Specimens at 1 KP each, then a Septarian Nodule worth 3). The Darkmoon Faire profession quest gives 3 monthly.
Things that change the bill
High Deftness in Zul'Aman and Harandar
observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.Mob pressure in both zones interrupts gathers constantly without it. Spiced Grub Steak from a vendor in Harandar adds Deftness on top of your tools.
Speed up the gathering itself

Mine the orelings
practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.Wild deposits spawn Rumbling Orelings when mined - kill them and mine the corpses for extra Motes of Wild Magic rather than riding on.
Questions people actually ask
- Where do I learn Midnight Mining?
- Belil in Silvermoon City.
- What gives skill at 60 to 100?
- Only Rich deposits, Seams, and Infused variants. Base deposits are grey at 60 - expect roughly 50-70 nodes for the final stretch, the slowest part of the profession.
- How does Overload work?
- Mining your first Infused deposit teaches it. It has a 12-hour cooldown that shrinks by 30 minutes per Midnight deposit mined, and each infused type has a different bonus effect - save it for Voidbound deposits, not Wild ones.
- Where do the 81 week-one Knowledge Points come from?
- 25 from first-gather discoveries, 10 each from the Amani and Abundance books, 24 from eight world treasures, 1 from the Inscription treatise, 3 from the weekly trainer quest, about 8 from weekly gathering drops, and 3 from the monthly Darkmoon Faire quest.
- Is Epic equipment worth it?
- For skill, no: Blue and Epic share the same primary skill. Buy Epic for the secondary stats, and remember epics are soulbound - they need a Crafting Order.
What we could not confirm
The ~50-70 node figure for 60-100 is the source's estimate; node competition on your realm moves it.
The 81 week-one Knowledge total is the source's arithmetic from listed sources, not a tested measurement.
Skill brackets are the community guides' figures. Blizzard does not publish skill-up tables, so the exact grey/yellow cutoffs can only be confirmed in the profession window.
