Midnight Season 2

Midnight Inscription leveling, 1 to 100

The cheapest route from 1 to 100 Midnight Inscription: mill herbs to 20, craft inks in the listed order, run the first-craft sequence to 50, then treatises to the cap. Full material list, trainer and vendor locations, and what to do with the treatises.

The short answer

Mill herbs, craft inks in order, then first-craft everything.

The first 20 points are pure Midnight Milling, the next 10 are 23 inks crafted in the listed order, and 30-50 is a first-craft sweep with the Treatise on Inscription deliberately saved for the 42-45 catch-up.

Every recipe grants a Knowledge point on its first craft. The run to 50 costs about 360 Tranquility Bloom and 65 Azeroot - the herbs are the only real money, and gathering them yourself removes most of the bill.

Where to learn it

Everything the route needs, and who sells what the trainer does not.

  • Zantasia

    Inscription trainer

    Silvermoon City

Teaches Midnight Inscription and hands out the new recipes at 45. Every recipe in the 1-50 route below comes from her.

  • Inscription supply vendor

    Vendor

    Silvermoon City, near the trainer

Sells Thalassian Songwater and Lexicologist's Vellum. The guide never names this vendor - find the one standing next to Zantasia. Do the vendor run before you start: 72 Songwater and 18 Vellum is not a mid-route errand.

Buy this once, for 1 to 50

Summed from the route below rather than quoted, so it cannot drift from the steps it is meant to pay for. The list stops at 50 because past that the cost depends on which recipes you own, and any single number would be invented.

The Soul Cipher and the 23 inks are crafted in-route - buy nothing for those lines. The Munsell Ink and Sienna Ink lines are floors, not counts: you spend 20 of each in the 30-50 steps and craft 11 and 12, so the difference comes from the Auction House. The pigment lines exist because the ink crafts consume them; the milled herbs are their source, though the guide never states the milling yields.

The route

1 to 50, in order

Rows marked First craft are in the route for the Knowledge point, so craft those before you repeat anything. Quantities are already multiplied out. 16 first crafts in total.

1 → 20

Mill everything

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

The first twenty points come from Midnight Milling alone. Mill the whole herb stock now - the pigments from this step feed the ink crafts at 20, and the guide gives herb totals rather than a cast count, so work through the stack until the bar stops moving.

  • 1x

    Midnight Milling

    • 360x Tranquility Bloom
    • 100x Argentleaf
    • 90x Mana Lily
    • 90x Sanguithorn

Milling is a profession ability, not a crafted item: the single count here stands for the whole milling run, and each herb is listed with its full quantity. The source never states casts per herb or skill per cast, so this step's 'count' is a bookkeeping entry, not a verified cast number.

20 → 30

Inks, in the listed order

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Craft the two ink batches now, in this exact order. Keep every ink you make - the 23 you craft here are spent across the 30-50 steps, so they are materials, not products.

  • 11x

    Munsell Ink

    • 33x Thalassian Songwater
    • 220x Powder Pigment
    • 110x Sanguithorn Pigment
    • 55x Mana Lily Pigment

First of the two batches. Thalassian Songwater is bought from the supply vendor next to the trainer, not milled or gathered.

  • 12x

    Sienna Ink

    • 36x Thalassian Songwater
    • 240x Powder Pigment
    • 120x Argentleaf Pigment
    • 60x Mana Lily Pigment

Second batch, straight after the Munsell Ink. Do not reorder the batches - the source insists the order is fixed.

30 → 35

Four first crafts

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

One of each, taken for their first-craft Knowledge points rather than for the skill. The Soul Cipher goes last in this group because the next step consumes it.

  • 1x

    Faunatender's Baton

    First craft
    • 1x Thalassian Songwater
    • 8x Azeroot
  • 1x

    Floratender's Crutch

    First craft
    • 1x Thalassian Songwater
    • 8x Azeroot
  • 1x

    • 1x Thalassian Songwater
    • 8x Azeroot
  • 1x

    • 1x Mote of Pure Void
    • 1x Mote of Light
    • 1x Duskshrouded Stone
    • 1x Munsell Ink
    • 1x Sienna Ink

You craft this yourself in this step, so buy nothing for it - but do not use or sell it. Codified Azeroot in the next step needs it as a material.

35 → 42

First-craft every remaining recipe

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Filter the profession window to First Craft Bonus so only un-crafted recipes show, and craft each once. The Treatise on Inscription is skipped on purpose here - it gets its own catch-up step next.

    First craft
    • 2x Munsell Ink
    • 2x Sienna Ink
    • 1x Mote of Pure Void
42 → 45

Treatise catch-up

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Clear the First Craft Bonus filter so all recipes show again, then three Thalassian Treatises on Inscription. The first of the three still earns its first-craft Knowledge point; the other two are plain skill.

  • 3x

    Thalassian Treatise on Inscription

    First craft
    • 9x Lexicologist's Vellum
    • 3x Mote of Wild Magic
    • 3x Munsell Ink
    • 3x Sienna Ink

If you arrived above 42, make fewer; if you are already at 45, skip the step entirely. The source does not give counts for other arrival points.

45 → 50

Trainer recipes, then two new missives

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Learn the new trainer recipes first - new recipes unlock at the trainer here. Then two fresh first crafts and three more treatises.

  • 1x

    Thalassian Missive of the Peerless

    First craft
    • 2x Munsell Ink
    • 2x Sienna Ink
    • 1x Mote of Pure Void

A new trainer recipe at 45 - learn before crafting.

  • 1x

    Thalassian Missive of the Quickblade

    First craft
    • 2x Munsell Ink
    • 2x Sienna Ink
    • 1x Mote of Pure Void

Also new from the trainer at 45.

  • 3x

    Thalassian Treatise on Inscription

    • 9x Lexicologist's Vellum
    • 3x Mote of Wild Magic
    • 3x Munsell Ink
    • 3x Sienna Ink

The first-craft bonus for this recipe was already taken in the 42-45 step.

50 to 100: treatises, then weapons

Above 50 there is no fixed route, because which treatises you discover - and whether green crafts stall your gains - depends on your account. Craft roughly 70 treatises, first-crafting each new one for the Knowledge bonus, and keep the weapon crafting-order fallback in reserve for the last points.

Treatises

  • Thalassian Treatise on Inscription

Orange to 90Calm Hands specialization (unlocks at skill 25). Start here; first-craft it once for the Knowledge bonus. Green for the last 10 points, so gains slow near 90.

1x Munsell Ink, 1x Sienna Ink, 1x Mote of Wild Magic

  • Treatises of the other professions (as discovered)

Orange to 90Discovered as you craft - first-craft each one once for the bonus. Treatises are Warbound, so mail them to your other characters; do not make all 70 from Inscription alone.

1x Munsell Ink, 1x Sienna Ink, 1x Mote (the mote type varies by profession)

Weapon crafting orders

  • Aln'hara Cane

    Orange to 100Specialization: Blueprints - Staves (5)

    Orange to 100Specialization: Blueprints - Bows (15)

Things that change the bill

  • Buy everything before you start

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

The guide says this twice, and for good reason: once the milling starts there is no clean stopping point. Herb prices move while you craft, so one shopping trip at the start is cheaper than three trips mid-route.

  • Pair with Herbalism if you can

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Herbs are the whole early game - 640 of them before you make a single ink. Gathering them yourself turns the biggest line on the shopping list from gold into time.

  • Do not use the treatises you craft

observed. Read from live data at a stated time. It describes what players did, not what the game guarantees.

Every treatise you make is Knowledge you can bank. The guide says to save them until your specialization path is decided, because 10 points in Calm Hands makes each treatise worth 2 Knowledge instead of 1. Using one early is spending double Knowledge.

  • Buy inks instead of milling more

practice. Convention among strong players. Widely followed, but it is not a rule and it can be wrong.

The 50-100 stretch eats about 140 inks and the source says buying them off the Auction House is usually faster and cheaper than milling the pigments yourself. Mill what the route needs; buy what it does not.

Questions people actually ask

Where do I learn Midnight Inscription?
Zantasia in Silvermoon City. The supply vendor next to her - the guide never gives the vendor's name - sells the Thalassian Songwater and Lexicologist's Vellum the route needs: 72 Songwater and 18 Vellum for the 1-50 stretch, so stock up before you start.
What does 1-50 cost?
About 360 Tranquility Bloom, 100 Argentleaf, 90 Mana Lily, 90 Sanguithorn and 65 Azeroot, plus 72 vendor Songwater, 18 vendor Vellum, 4 Mote of Primal Energy, 4 Mote of Pure Void, 1 Mote of Light, 7 Mote of Wild Magic and 1 Duskshrouded Stone. The pigments for the inks come from milling the herbs. Past 50 the costs fork on discovery luck, which is why the totals stop here.
Why is milling the whole early game?
Milling is the only thing that gives skill from 1 to 20, and it produces the pigments the ink step needs. Mill the full herb stack first - 640 herbs - and craft the 23 inks from what comes out before moving on.
Does the ink order actually matter?
Yes, according to the guide: 11 Munsell Ink first, then 12 Sienna Ink, in that exact order. Keep every ink you craft - all 23 are spent as materials across the 30-50 steps, so they are supplies, not products.
What does the First Craft Bonus filter do?
Every recipe grants one Knowledge point the first time you craft it, and the filter in the profession window shows only the recipes you have not crafted yet. The 35-42 step is built around it: set the filter, craft each remaining recipe once, and skip the Treatise on Inscription until the 42-45 catch-up.
When do specializations unlock?
The first unlocks at skill 25, then more at 50, 60 and 75 - you can eventually learn all four. The guide recommends Calm Hands first because it teaches the Thalassian Treatise on Inscription, the recipe the 50-100 stretch is built on. Do not consume treatises before your path is decided: 10 Calm Hands points double their Knowledge yield.
How do I finish 50-100?
About 70 treatises, first-crafting each discovered one for its Knowledge bonus - start with the Inscription treatise, then switch to one your second profession or an alt can use, since treatises are Warbound and mailable. The recipes turn green for the last 10 points, so gains slow near the cap. If skill stalls, the source's fallback is 1-3 weapon crafts through the crafting-order system, each worth 3 points.

What we could not confirm

  • Milling 1-20: the source gives herb totals (640 herbs) but never states casts, pigments per herb, or confirms those quantities deliver exactly 1-20. The data treats the milling step as one bookkeeping craft, not a verified cast count.

  • Pigment math: the two ink batches demand 460 Powder Pigment, 110 Sanguithorn Pigment, 120 Argentleaf Pigment and 115 Mana Lily Pigment, but the source never states milling yields, so the route cannot verify the milled herbs actually cover the inks.

  • Treatise ink cost 50-100: roughly 70 treatises need about 70 Munsell Ink and 70 Sienna Ink each, but the route only crafts 23 inks. The source covers the gap with 'buy inks from the AH', so there is no verifiable total for inks or motes past 50.

  • Mote totals: the shopping list states 4 Mote of Primal Energy, 4 Mote of Pure Void, 1 Mote of Light and 7 Mote of Wild Magic. The itemized recipes account for all of them, but the 7x Wild Magic figure is only fully explained if later treatises keep spending it, which the source does not itemize.

  • Skill points per craft, and the level each recipe stops being orange at, are the community guide's figures. Blizzard does not publish skill-up tables, so these cannot be verified anywhere except in the profession window.

  • Weapon crafts: '3 skill points each' and the stop-treatises-at-91/94/97 fallback are the source's figures. orangeUntil 100 on the weapon rows is a placeholder ceiling, not a stated breakpoint.

  • The 42-45 step assumes arrival at 42 and says to craft fewer if higher or skip if at 45, with no counts for other arrival points.

  • Treatise discovery order from 50-100 is random on the source; there is no ordered list to transcribe.

  • The supply vendor near Zantasia is unnamed in the guide.
